MARCUS S L
It was really hard to go to lectures, but he's passionate about the subject matter and can be funny so I really wanna give him a pass. but those 50 minute lectures felt like HOURS. I'm sad that I took this class for an arts credit, I wish I could have done something else.
So, you want to take World Music with THE Scott Marcus. Do you have social anxiety? get over it. Want to look at anything or anyone that's not Scott? forget it. Miss one of the mandatory concerts? ky$. he's a cutie patootie though!
Don't take if u want to sit quietly in lecture and protect your peace. Do not look down. Do not look away from him. If u think he can't see u, he can. Pauses frequently to ye|| at ppl for looking at their phones/laptops. Truly fight or flight the moment u walk into class. Oh u want to learn about the WORLD in WORLD music? Think again. Only India.
Literally will only talk about India and yell at you if you disagree with him on anything. Additionally constantly stops the class to yell at people and tell them to get off their phones then be all pissy the rest of lecture. He's never consistent with iClicker but makes it mandatory to attend all lectures.
Only cares about his interests, and his interests alone. He's practically incapable of teaching anything out of his area of research. He brings in guests to talk about other topics sometimes, but doesn't even give time to lecture on textbook material at all in class, even though the tests are textbook heavy. Picks on people in a 300+ class, a lot.
He is an incredibly passionate professor on topics of ethnomusicology, but he gets physically mad at students who do not share this same passion. He is constantly calling out students in front of the 300+ lecture for simple things like looking at their computer instead of him, regardless if they're taking notes. I can only describe him as a bully.
He's really passionate about India's culture and the classes he teaches but he's extremely unorganized and basically his 3 hr long class is just about his life in India also he was teaching us stuff that had nothing to do with music in India.
MUS22N taught by Marcus Scott is an interesting elective. He gives you an amount of information about middle-east music theory but he would not test on it. I highly recommend the people who wants to learn an extra music intrument take this course.
I took MUS 22N with him, which is a small course teaching an instrument. He is very nice and caring, and he is definitely high-level instrument player and a proficient of Arabic Music Theory. However sometimes he does not show up without providing a reason and cannot be contacted through e-mail, so it would be better if you ask him for his phone No
Professor Marcus is sooooo funny-the funniest instructor. Though sometimes unorganized, if you pay attention, you can learn a lot from his theory class. I like the way he teaches Pythagorean and just tuning system. He also brings many interesting instruments to lecture. The homework and exam are easy and straightforward. Highly recommended
Prof Marcus is very old fashioned and his lectures can be a bit unorganized but if you go to his office hours and just have a conversation with him about his background and/or the course material, it clears a lot of it up. He is a very interesting professor with a non-traditional background. Great person to have a conversation with
It was great interacting with him.
