Great professor to work with. I took RELS 3366. He gives great feedback and is always on top of helping students learn/pass the class. Prepare for reading and writing discussions/small prompts weekly. I have learned so much through this course, he will always have video lectures and YouTube. No exams. I would take him again!
Loved taking a hinduism class with Dr. Ullrey, he is very passionate and knowledgeable. No long exams but very long discussions & assignments every week along with readings. I already had knowledge of the religion, so it was easy to read faster by skimming through. Class was asynch, but he took the time to know every student & give feedback.
He is a visiting professor at DU. I took an intensive 4 week course. I have taken 2 4 week courses at the same time in the past & it was much easier overall than his alone. The amount of work makes it extremely hard to do anything else, even another class. He did not follow school calendar dates so expect assignments & finals after classes end.
I took Religions of India with Professor Ullrey. While some of his lectures got long and boring, I think they would be interesting for someone more interested in history. He answers any questions very thoroughly; he has an absolute wealth of knowledge. He's also incredibly eccentric, and has great enthusiasm for his field. Thanks Professor!
Professor Ullrey made Indic Civilizations as enjoyable as it could possibly be. He is funny, charismatic, helpful, and your biggest supporter. He is one of those rare teachers that actually wants to see his students succeed! The tests were very clear cut and easy; however, the two papers are tough and require work.
Ullrey is tricky. He's really smart, but doesn't know how to teach. His lectures are kind of like highlighting an entire page of really dense reading. Most questions on tests are trick questions, and he talked the entire time during the midterm, which was really distracting. Reading is long, lecture is long. Wish I had taken something easier.
Truly wants as many students as possible to pass. Gives many breaks. Lectures are difficult to comprehend at times, but he provides you with a study guide for tests. He makes you earn your "A" and gives you a chance to pass the class if your lazy or stupid or whatever your excuse may be.
He is that professional and almost takes the fate of his students as a joke. Not organized or clear in his lectures and expects students to know what Hinduism or other east religions are about when he gives extremely long and incomprehensible reading assignments with no study guides or worksheets. There is no way to know what to study
This is the worst class I've taken since I've been at UCSB for the last four years. The lectures are unclear, long, and all over the place. This professor has no idea how to teach a course and should never be allowed back on this campus. Be ready for pop quizzes every week and paper topics that are unfocused. STAY AWAY.
Don't take unless you have a previous thorough knowledge on Indian civilization, you will hate it and have no idea whats going on
Not sure what's going on in this class. He just kind of talks about random stuff for an hour and fifteen minutes. No organization, nothing to guide you in your learning.
This is an Indian Civilization's class. I do not understand what is happening during his lectures. There is way to much information, big words, and lack of comprehension. And homework! HA what a load of work, its more like a snooze of a short story every two and half nights. Wish I had the foresight to not take this class.
