Took it PNP. Worst class at UCSB. She is not clear on instructions, no clear grading scale. Got mad when we asked for more instructions. Everything is super subjective. Curves class by comparing you to classmates. Talked too much about her personal life story and gives unsolicited cheesy life lessons. 0/10, avoid at all cost.
Lecture us more about life than the actual class material. No clear grading scheme and curved DOWN during a pandemic for this GE class
I took her vernacular reading class, which was focused on novels written in Ming and Qing dynasty. She is definitely a Great teacher, very kind and knowledgable. She is precious, I am so glad and blessed to had the chance to study in her class.
Definitely do not take this class. At least two pages summary every week, and a 5-page final paper based on your presentation. She knows that the final paper due on Tuesday, but she still assigned a 4-page summary due on Monday. Lots of stories about herself but nothing related to the material. Terrible professor
She gives tons of homework. You have to write 1 to 2 summaries every week. There is one group project and one paper you have to write. Make sure you go to class, because she takes attendance/gives pop quiz every lecture.
She is overly strict. She has many different ways to check your attendence during the lectures. No late assignment though you just late one sceond and she won't accept it anymore. It is very terrible. Take care!
She is overly strict about attendance and nobody really knows about the grading. Promised to give me partial credit but never did. Some of her opinions are biased. Though she's very passionate about teaching, the lecture is boring TBH.
She cares about her students and makes efforts to know each of them. However, she is overly strict about attendance (will be dropped if you don't attend the first couple lectures). Reading and writing heavy. Unfortunately it doesn't even count as a writing course. Don't recommend this class for non native Chinese speakers.
It's an easy class for me as a Chinese. unfriendly to other. Really fast speaking with heavy accent. The problem is the UNPROFESSIONALISM in her teaching. Many things are wrong and misleading with no supporting fact online. She mixes old words used in 20 years ago with new born words. She also mocks and patronizes her friend for unrelated content.
From her teaching, you can know she is complacent about her knowledge. And because of it, she is not amenable to reasons, stick to rules. easy class easy pass but dislike the professor from the very first lecture. P.S. you must attend the first lecture, or you'll be dropped even if you emailed her and beg weeks ago and she won't reply.
She is so funny and is very passionate about the subject. The material is interesting but kinda difficult for me cause it was sometimes in mandarin and I'm cantonese but I made friends lol. Only thing was weekly 1 pg report about readings & a 5 pg paper about your group presentation, for a class offering no writing requirement
Love her!
