If you can do the bare minimum as a student, take this teacher. He is an ass if you're late to class and he doesn't post lectures online so you need to actually go to most lectures, but he basically gives 100% on all writing assignments and tells you exactly what is on the midterm and final. Super easy class and bought pizza on the last day.
i absolutely LOVED this class. his lectures are no phones no computers so it's easy to stay engaged. prof lanuza is SO FUNNY. had me cracking up in class. don't know how ppl don't succeed in this class--just show up! he tells you EXACTLY what will be on test. WE GOT A PIZZA PARTY! he loved us. just answer his questions in class.
This was my last class at UCSB, and I can confidently say this was the worst teacher I've ever had. He acted superior, made constant snarky remarks, and treated students unfairly. If you're a white male, expect to be singled out. His ego is massive and he pushes a strong agenda. Good luck to all those he reading this out loud too, you gonna need it
I enjoyed the content of the class and how Prof Lanuza delivered info, felt like I learned a lot and I don't mind the no technology use (made it easier to learn imo). But he was very disorganized with assignments and was lowkey mean (dont come late to class). Overall easy, just come to lecture, only graded on a few hws and midterm & final.
Professor Lanuza is the most disorganized, rude, and unaccommodating professor I've ever had. If you miss a lecture, he basically blames you for poor planning, even if you had a death in the family. He also doesn't respect DSP accommodations and will not fill proctor requests until days before the exam. Would not recommend this course at all.
No instructions provided ever. I had to email my Ta begging twice for instructions and I NEVER GOT THEM. The professor would never mention instructions or assignments until after their due dates. Lecture literally felt like torture so long so repetitive. Exams are full of trick questions and harder than he lets on. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
The worst professor I've ever had at UCSB. Horrible lectures, no usage of phones or laptops. Extremely boring. Also he doesn't care about your situation or anything, least understanding professor ever. 0/10
As a former SOC 1 TA for Professor Lanuza and having TAed for 3+ other SOC professors, I must be candid—I would not TA for him again nor recommend him. The lack of clear assignment guidelines, condescending communication, and unavailable lecture slides created unnecessary confusion and was needlessly challenging. Some TAs even cried after meetings.
Phones must be put away at start of class. He walks around to make sure that it is put away. Don't even try it cause he will call you out. Easy class and tells you EXACTLY what's on the test. Group project and individual projects are easy. You will learn a lot. Can be finished after 6 weeks. Shows his rate my prof. to scare you but you will be okay
BEST CLASS! Does not want students that do not want to learn. No phones or computers- he will call you out. Lectures are interesting . He tells you EXACTLY what is on the midterm/ final. Had to reach out to the TA for directions for group paper but got 100% on it. Have to attend lecture, but an easy A if you attend and pay attention.
Class is easy as long as you go to most of the lectures, he is very clear about what will be on the test, and the projects were graded lightly. The no-tech rule is a little annoying, but not the end of the world. His accent makes him a little hard to understand during lectures and his jokes aren't that funny, but otherwise he isn't that bad.
Great lecturer, very clear grading criteria. Make sure you are on top of assignments as there are NO late assignments not a big deal as everything is listed before hand. No phone class which I found refreshing. Easy A. -1 point as he does not seem too concerned about getting to know students as everything is directed to TA.
A lot of the reviews on her speak negatively on him, but he's a really good professor. The no phone policy isn't a big deal, writing down everything helps anyways. :) The assignments were super easy as long as you stayed on top of everything. He also does tell you EXACTLY what's going to be on the exam!
Although lecture is not mandatory I would go to lecture if you want to get a good grade. He is very informed in immigration. There are no phones or technology allowed in class meaning you must take paper notes but I actually really enjoy it.
He is really funny and makes lectures interesting. There are no phones or technology, but he literally tells you what to take notes on and what to expect for the quiz exactly. Raising your hand and adding input makes the class more interesting because he wants students to engage with the theories instead of focusing on notes.
Took Lanuza for soc 124. He is hilarious, and the no phone policy taught me how to take notes again! Very clear on what's going to be on the test and lectures are mandatory but super engaging.
Professor LaSnooza (lots of busy work and easy A)
By far the easiest class I have taken at UCSB other than dance 45. Strict no phone policy but he tells you exactly what is on the midterm. Assignments have little to no flexibility on the due dates but simple busy work. Complete everything on time for an easy A. Optional final if you do good on everything and do well on the midterm.
the professor himself isnt good. he is weirdly strict about phones in class, will call out students for showing up late/if they ask for help, and is extremely strict about deadlines. however, i will say that he is easy in the sense that he tells you what is EXACTLY on the midterm. i would recommend soc 1 the class but definitely not this professor
Loved his lectures. Lanuza is enthusiastic and I enjoyed the class. Soc 1 was the easiest A I received. Everything is based on completion and the assigned homework was not that time-consuming. No readings. Although he doesn't post the slides, you could always get the info from another classmate. He tells you EXACTLY what's on the exam.
easy A if you attend lecture (doesn't post slides and midterm + optional final draw directly from notes). 1 group project, maybe unexpected for an intro class but there were clear guidelines and they break up deadlines to make it easier for you.1 final "research paper" broken up same way as group project. 3 documentary responses. no readings :)
no posting on school web which means you should go every lecture
Easy class and good intro to sociology. The professor has a strict no phone policy in lectures and will call you out, but does that mainly so students write down what's gonna be on the midterm. Assignments are easy, but there's strict deadlines with little to no flexibility. Overall good class and professor if you remember all the deadlines.
A total rollercoaster. Prof is weirdly strict about phones in class but will tell you what to write down and what's on the midterm exactly- final is optional. There are two 30% projects; single and group. Had the worst experience with my group. Never done a research project before and didn't expect to in an intro class. Don't take for easy class.
