Class is super lecture heavy. Sadly only graded on like 3 things. Midterm, final, and a final group project. Group project is annoying and somewhat hard. Class would be a lot better if there wasn't a final project and final exam. Kam herself is a good professor but the class is just super lecture heavy and sometimes its hard to pay attention.
doesn't post her slides or any notes online, and really doesn't emphasize what you need to know for tests. This class is not like other comm classes at UCSB and the majority of exam questions were on small lecture points one really wouldn't expect to see. definitely take another comm class if you have the option
Dont get me wrong Kams lecture are very engaging and informative. However, the study guide material is not proportional to the test questions. Very confusing - questions are asked from minuscule information from the textbook and journal articles she puts on gauchospace. Just avoid this class if you are trying to get in the A range.
After taking her 107 class, Kam is my favorite Comm professor at UCSB hands down. She is kind, funny, and ORGANIZED! Her tests are to the point and if you've read and paid attention to lecture you will do fine. Readings are reasonable. Lecture is interesting. She provides tons of current examples that are relatable. Overall she is so great!
I took her 107 class this past summer. It was a 3 week course so a lot of material she generally covers was left out. I enjoyed her lecturing. She really wants the class to participate ... as they should! I would take her again. We had 1 midterm and a final. Had an extra credit option too!
Awesome professor. Really good lecturer. Definitely recommended for any upper division comm class
Very well-spoken, knowledgeable, and passionate about the topic she teaches. Shes very open-minded and creates a good learning environment. I took her in the summer and was worried about getting bored during a 3 hour lecture, but she does well to keep things interesting and engaging. She's a good lecturer. Take her!
I didn't mind prof kam as a person but man were the lectures boring. This class was not fun at all, group project was graded super strict and both exams felt like she was trying to just trick us. Please don't take this class take literally any other class. Save your gpa pls for me🙏
Most boring class I took in my time at UCSB. Dr. Kam is really nice but the material is incredibly basic and yet she still finds a way to make the test questions nuanced and tricky, and attendance is required. The best part of the class is the guest lectures, but even then she asks about minute details that don't matter. Avoid if u can, GPA killer.
I really liked Prof Kam. You're graded on attendance (Iclicker), a group project, midterm and final exam. She really knows what she is talking about and uses a lot of relevant criteria for the course. Tests are pretty difficult/application over memorization so getting the textbook/doing the readings is def important. I'd recommend her!
Professor Kam is a very kind woman and a well credentialed professor. However, this class is very very boring, so beware. Attendance is mandatory with two excused absences. Maybe it's just the content of the class but the lectures feel so so long. love kam but it was definitely one of my least enjoyable communication classes.
I took Professor Kam for a 3-week summer course and it was one of my favorite classes I have taken in the Comm department! Somehow she made a 3 hour lecture always feel interesting. Since it was a summer class the grade was based on a midterm and final exam (both multiple choice) but I think during the school year there's also a paper.
Dr.Kam is by far my favorite comm professor! Although i took her 3 week course, her lectures are super easy to follow along. Her exams do have some questions from the reading, so even light reading will help! She is one of those professors who just makes you feel safe to engage in class discussions. 10/10 would recommend this course.
Dr. Kam is really lovely. She's a kind professor who genuinely cares about her students. You can tell she really passionate about what she lectures us on. You also don't have to go to lecture (she posts slides online), but going will make you understand the topics better. I would highly recommend her !!
Ive taken 2 courses with Kam so far. Shes great! I love her lectures and the material is easy. Test questions make you think and apply terms instead of just regurgitating definitions but she provides a study guide so if you do that and do your readings and attend class youll get a good grade. She wants you to understand & succeed
Great professor. Easy to follow along with during lecture. For the readings, at least do some of them to do ok on the tests. I skimmed (not skipped) most of them and passed - there will be questions on them on the exams. Definitely pay attention in lecture. Overall, I enjoyed her class
Dr. Kam is a great lecturer. She's a dynamic speaker and well-educated in her field. I tune out easily, which makes lecture hard for me sit through sometimes, but she was easy to follow along with. She also does well to engage her students, and she brings various sources from outside of the textbook to keep things interesting. Recommended
