Extremely knowledgeable professor. The Lectures are much more fulfilling if you do the reading beforehand. Not a difficult class and barely any reading compared to most lit classes.
I usually fall asleep in lecture, but if you attend and listen, the midterm and final are really easy. The paper is fine. Everything depends on your TA. But Kittler hands you everything. Read before class. It's easier to understand. The readings are pretty interesting, too.
At first, I kept falling asleep in class. He seems very boring. However, the class itself is very easy and we only read 3 short stories for one quarter. Attending lecture and you'll know excatly what to write on the midterm and final. Do the readings before class. They are not long, but they make the lectures more interesting and easy to follow.
This class is an easy A. The lectures are really boring and easy to fall asleep in. But the prof goes over everything you need to know for the quizzes/final. If you pay attention in section you'll def get an A. I slept in lecture all the time and ended up with an A+ in the class.
Just go to lecture and everything will be easy.
Very good professor if you got to class and are interested in the subject. If not, you probably shouldn't be taking this class to begin with. He sometimes embarks on pointless side notes, and often takes too much time on one thing, but his class is interesting and very easy.
speaks in german accent, monotonous lecture. BUT extremely easy with 2 tests and 2 QZs and a paper. All exams were easy and he is EXTREMELY HELPFUL. He also lets you make a QZ if you missed it.
Extremely boring lectures with useless historical anecdotes taking up the majority of time are to be expected. Additionally, the guy is nearly possible to understand, so even if you do go to lecture you won't gain any insight into the material at all...stay away.
Stay away! His midterm and final are based on his lectures, which are largely incomprehensible, though the paper was fairly simple. Take this class with a different professor if you must take it.
he's really smart but very hard to understand. its difficult going to & staying awake in his class but better to go bc what he says is important for mid/final. section is really helpful. reading the books is probably best but what you need to know is discussed in section.
Although Kittler is really knowledgable, it is extremely hard to understand anything he has to say. He alos is one fo the professors that can lecture for hours and when you leave you don't even know one word he said. Even though he is not easy to understand the class is based on reading, so if you read the books you'll be fine.
This professor is kind of dull but he brings up some interesting points occasionally. Although he is dull, the class is fairly easy (I got an A) and straightforward.
absolutely brilliant, but his lectures were as dull as could be. his emphasis on the greek alphabet was ridiculous. not a good teacher, the only reason i did well in his class was because of my amazing ta.
He was too hard to understand; German.
Brilliant man, sub-par professor. I took his class with about 300 other people and we were trying to cram 4 1/2 major pieces of literature into 8 weeks (He spends the 1st two on the Greek Alphabet). If he ever taught a smaller class I might take it but overall, his accent, sporadic nature and attitude make the class unenjoyable.
So brilliant that he has no organizational skills! He loves comparative literature and it shows, but its hard to understand him through his accent. What he covers in class is helpful for the final if you can get from him what is important and what is just gabbing.
Oy. Worst professor I've ever had. I almost feel bad for him cause people walk out before he's even finished lecturing. Lecture is a great place to nap...section is really helpful though.
Brilliant scholar. A privilege to learn from him.
I took this class fall quarter soph year and it is WITHOUT DOUBT the SINGLE WORST CLASS I have ever taken. Impossible to follow and understand. Reading was pointless. Spoke for extended periods in French, scribbled on the overhead in Greek, and wondered why students didn't understand! Avoid at all costs!
Completely random rants during lectures. Impossible to get help and answer questions
dull, difficult to understand...
by far the worst prof. I've had in my 3 years at UCSB. he makes his lectures up as he goes along, and takes up all the time he can by going off on tangents. we literally sit there and laugh at how horrible he is, how he doesn't seem to care at all, and how nobody in the class learns a single thing.
