I personally didn't mind Seng Low and really liked her enthusiasm for the course. Her lectures were engaging and taught concepts in an understandable way but she moves through topics quickly (lots to cover in 1B). Her tests were fair if you knew the material well. This class is definitely a weeder class though, so join a bio mentor group or CLAS!
she doesn't answer all your questions thru email when you need help. she's super lazy and tests on things that she went over for 1 second. seng babe if u reading this, either make the tests make sense or dont teach at all, we don't mind :)
Weekly multiple choice quizzes & 3 exams (mostly short answers). Grading for short answer questions is all over the place bc he doesn't give feedback on exams unless you email directly. His lectures are pretty interesting and the material is straightforward. I would recommend reading the book along with the powerpoints to study for the midterms.
For mcdb 1b and 111: Her lectures have a ton of info that you MUST memorize to do well (I read the slides over and over and did a bunch of practice exams/quizlet flashcards). I think she explains concepts well but she does go very fast; also she does a good job of maintaining your attention. Never went to OH's so idk how she interacts w/ students.
I'm usually an A student, look what I got. AVOID AT ALL COSTS- taken during pandemic/fires, 3 million acres on fire/air is hazardous. Good: funny, knows material well Bad: unapproachable, uncompassionate, unclear grading, condescending, doesn't answer emails, makes fun of people, DOES NOT CARE ABOUT YOU AT ALL. Curve helped by 1%.
I took Low session B during the summer and she was a great professor. You can tell that she is passionate about the subject and has a great sense of humor during lecture. This is easily the most interesting class I have taken here. However, if you are not interested in the subject, do not take this class as it is challenging if you don't study.
Her score here is much lower than I expected. Her lecture is clear and intense, and she is good at explaining process in human body. The exam is really hard, but it is doable if you review on the lecture and textbook.
Worst professor I've had. She reads the slides word-for-word, goes pretty fast, and doesn't explain or go into depth about the material at all. She really made bio uninteresting and more confusing than it already is. Just having to listen to her voice for an hour every other day bugged me. And not to mention her midterm was extremely hard.
Her lecture is very very funny. She speak slowly, if you go over the lectures recordings (2x speed)before exam you will be fine. Her exam is easy. Since herself is not native English speaker, she will not trick you on language which means the wrong choices will be very obvious if you know you know.
Took over the summer, so yes, I was expecting a more-than-average course load but Dear Lord. Holy. Mackerel. This lady surpassed all bounds of making this a weeder class. Unless you absolutely must, I would not recommend taking this course with Low because of how dull her lectures are and how unwilling she is to interact with her audience.
Lows tests are really hard. Nearly every question is which is false and it really tests you on details because one word can make a whole statement false. Definitely stay on top of studying, go to clas and the review sessions. Try to study the material before you go to clas so everythings review. Rewatch lectures. Iclickers graded for accuracy
Dr. Low is a great lecturer. The information in this class can be boring at times since it is so general, but Low really knows how to keep her students interested. Her test is very hard, the midterm average was a 64% but she curves. Book is not necessary, just really focus on the information given in class and write down everything she says.
Super entertaining teacher, love her lectures, but holy moly she crams in a lot of information in her lectures and her test is HARD. Semi impossible, even with tutoring... But the curve will save you. Pretty good professor if you ask me!
Reminds me of my tiny old asian grandma. She is very funny and can make a lecture hall of 900 kids laugh. She covers alot of material so you need to put in time to study in depth outside of class. Her tests are extremely specific and hard. Try your best to know important details. Print out powerpoint slides to bring to class.
Although she was pretty funny/eccentric, she moved incredibly fast in her lectures and didn't really give students time to ask questions. I felt like her test didn't focus on the big concepts discussed in class, but rather on the minor details that were briefly touched upon :( Read the book to prepare yourself for lecture and then memorize stuff
I found Low's lectures to be incredibly disorganized and scattered. It was really hard to follow her slides because there seemed to be no organization whatsoever? It was all bullet points and in a really weird order. She moves super fast and is REALLY DETAIL ORIENTED. Her test was REALLY hard and tricky.
I was really surprised to see the other reviews! I personally love Low. She's hilarious and knows the material well. She does move fast and gives credit for correct iClicker questions but as long as you keep up with the reading, the pace won't bother you. Go to her office hours! She's super approachable and can help with whatever you don't get.
Low moves really really fast. I feel like her portion of MCDB 1B can be an entire one of itself. Sometimes she can be hard to understand and is not really good at explaining things, but she can be funny which is an upside. Overall would not recommend, take the other mcdb professors if you can.
Low is a great lecturer. Funny, straightforward, concise. She gets to the point, make sure you memorize everything she says; it will be on the test. Know the random facts she spurts out they will be tested too. Tests are tricky but if you study hard you will do well.
One of the worst classes at UCSB. This class is made to be much harder than it needs to be. She speaks so fast that you can't keep up even if you tried! Be prepared for a failing grade on the midterm and then for Low to tell you that it's because you're dumb and the test is "totally doable".
Goes at a machine gun pace to teach you volume upon volume of information at the surface level, then tests you in depth on those same topics. It's almost as if she thinks that we should immediately be masters on any given topic that she brushes over on a slide or two. Most unnecessarily difficult course I've taken in college so far.
Fun class, TERRIBLE professor. Lectures are incredibly fast and not well taught at all. The first exam consisted of almost ALL "which of the following is true?" or "which of the following is false?" questions... 51% average. everyone I know failed, even while knowing all the material. Intro bio should not be harder than ochem
Funny and awesome professor. Posts slides and gaucho casts online. Moves very quickly but very helpful. Memorize all the info and you will do well on exams. Exams are pretty straightforward, but make sure to read each question and answer choice CAREFULLY as some are tricky and one word can mess you up.
Dr. Low is a very funny woman that gives engaging lectures -- given that, she speaks extremely fast. However, her lectures are very clear, and if you go to CLAS and study your notes/lecture slides, you'll do well. The class is straight memorization. Loved her lectures, so that really helped me do well in her class.
