I'm amazed at how organized the class structure was even though it was 3 weeks and my first upper-division comm (A great start to summer classes). Such an inspirational class to learn how to manage conflict and I learned a lot! I also look forward to taking COMM111 in the fall.
Professor Merolla was a great/caring teacher and very knowledgeable about nonverbal communication. Most lectures were interesting but sometimes they could get boring. The quizzes and papers are not hard but you do have to do the work to get a good grade.
I loved taking Professor Merolla's COMM89 class! The class was engaging, with in-person and video lectures and a TA section, although the final paper was worth 40% of your grade. A textbook is not required for purchase; it is provided as a PDF on Canvas. If you plan on taking COMM89, I 100% WILL TAKE IT AGAIN!
Professor Merolla is the most well-spoken and knowledgeable professor I've had. He knows everything about the course and the subject. If you have the chance to take one of his classes, do it. The class is easy to understand, and homework is based on completion. The final paper is challenging, but you won't lose sleep over it.
My favorite comm teacher so far. Merolla truly cares for students and goes out of his way to make sure the material is interesting to learn about by tying teachings into present stories/ trends. Tests online and one easy group project that is super chill and done in sections. I would totally take another one of his classes in the future.
Merolla was a spectacular dude. Made every lecture captivating and connected each theory to timely events / references in order for the class to be engaged. COMM 89 consisted of 4 easy online quizzes and an essay. Every section assignment had room for creativity which I cherished most... Easy money A; Merolla was a chiller and a half too.
4 online quizzes, lowest grade dropped. No other final or midterm. 1 paper worth 40% or smth of ur grade that he and TAs help with a lot via structured assignments. Best lecturer I've had at SB so far. Great speaker. His lectures are engaging and funny. Not a hard class at all. Section attendance mandatory
perfect professor
Great professor I really enjoyed his lectures. He made things easy to understand and was very open to feedback. I would definitely have him as my teacher again.
Prof Merolla is great! Some of the theories taught can be confusing and the concepts can get muddled but he is very open to questions and does his best to support everyone. 1 big paper due at the end of the quarter, weekly readings, and quizzes. As long as you go to lecture and watch pre-recorded lectures you'll be fine.
I loved professor Merolla! His lectures were engaging, so it was worth it to attend class, even though he posted his slides. The whole class was structured around a paper, which was about 40 points of our final grade. He gives a ton of time to work on it and lots of room during lecture for questions. You can tell he is passionate about his work!
Merolla really cares about his students and their experience in his class. He checks in on you throughout the quarter to make sure all is well. He has a few quizzes in his class that are multiple choice and can be stressful if you don't study the notes. Interesting lectures and easy paper prompts. Be thorough and you will be good!
Great class and amazing lectures. All tests are online with days to take it, but they can be challenging. You have to do 2/3 of the papers and those are short and easy. Great prof and interesting class
Professor. Merolla is the best and kindest professor I've ever had at UCSB! He is very professional and kind. And he is a professor who is very valuable to know. Definitely recommend him!
Professor Merolla was great! I loved the structure of the class, grading was very clear, and as long as you go to/watch the lectures and take notes, (open-note quizzes) you will succeed! I found his lectures really interesting, and way preferred this class over Comm 1. This class is what made me fall in love with the comm major.
Professor Merolla is the absolute sweetest! It was so fun to learn about new communication concepts and he always presented them in an interesting and cool way. Highly recommend taking Comm 89 with him if you get the chance!
Dr. Merolla is easily one of the best COMM professors in the department, and personally my favorite at UCSB. Grading consisted of three online quizzes (18% each), a short writing assignment (16%), and the final essay (5 pages, 30%). Lectures were amazing and the readings were relevant. I highly recommend this professor and any of his courses.
I took this course when a portion of the quarter was online and I thought that the online and in-person lectures were both great! The recorded lectures are very well produced and interesting to watch. There were two written assignments and three quizzes which were open-note! Very easy and interesting class and I would definitely take it again.
I am a senior about to graduate and this class was literally my favorite at UCSB. Merolla's lectures are so organized and concise. He is always available after class to answer any questions. The TA-Rebe is amazing she is very accomodating and is always available to answer questions, and is so helpful during office hours too!
I took this class to retake comm 89 and I really really enjoyed merollas lectures. His lectures were easy to follow and made really good examples and explained the theories really well. I am really sad the class has come to an end because I learned a lot from him and I really liked his teaching style.
Lectures very informative and interesting.
Prof. Merolla assisted Prof. Lane W21. Grading included Intro Video (5%), Weekly Assignments (40%), Paper Outline (10%), Research Paper (40%) and Research Participation (5%). Lectures + reading material was interesting and easy to understand. I recommend Li Qi as a TA.
This class was taken through an asynchronous format. Each week there are posted lectures and the most is 2 hours. There is a weekly module assignment due which is around 1 page about the lecture and it is simple as long as you follow all the instructions. One final essay around 4 pages and is easy. Recommend everyone take it since it's relaxing
To be honest, his lectures are very well-organized and thorough so I actually enjoyed going to lectures because I felt like I was actually learning something. However, to be honest I also had a professor crush on him so I WANTED to go to class HAHA. Overall, interesting class and manageable if you go to lectures and keep up with the readings.
