super easy class, lectures are quite random and unnecessary, but he gives pop quizzes. If you go to lecture and skim the readings class is easy
one of the best profs in the english department. lectures gave context to the readings and grade is based on a paper, midterm, final. he goes on tangents sometimes but he really cares about class material.
i did not expect to enjoy English 1650-1789 but Prof. Gilmore made it so interesting and related the texts to issues that we're facing currently in the 21st century. lecture is required and also 100% worth it if not just for the really awesome gems of wisdom and humor that he throws into each class. he made a boring topic a lot of fun
Timothy Gilmore is a wonderful professor. Yes, he sometimes rambles, but his rambling is a clear sign of his passion. Its an easy class if you actually pay attention to the lectures. Also his voice is very soothing. If you think Timmy talks too slow or too boring, simply put his lectures on 1.4x speed. He deserve a higher RMP grade!!
I absolutely loved taking this class with Gilmore. He has amazing ideas that were so interesting to me. He really makes me think about how these topics relate to my life and the world. This is a class I will remember forever. Yes, there is a lot of reading, but that's expected in an English class. The readings are cool, too.
Overall, if you keep up with lectures and do the assigned reading and lectures then you'll do fine. There were quizzes every other week that tested on reading material. A midterm with both short and long responses, research project (based on reading), and an optional final.
Lectures are quite disorganized and not very engaging. Also, speaks slowly and often goes on tangents. Grade determined by reading quizzes given every two weeks, one midterm (short answer/essay) and a 4-6 page research paper. Made the final optional though, which was nice. Make sure you get a good TA! Easy class, boring but understanding professor.
There is so much reading and he makes things needlessly complicated by going in depth into themes and trying to connect everything. It just makes things worse.
Not great. Pretty easy class but the lectures are boring and you can skip EVERY class and still pass as long as you write good papers. I would show up to lecture and just do homework from other classes or read a book.
Omg professor Gilmore is soooo boring. Lecture consists of him ranting about random things and then gets upset when people stop showing up to lecture. His class was based around 3 papers and no midterm or final so pretty easy I guess.
Very boring and goes off topic, I dreaded every. single. lecture. Couldn't tell you a single thing I learned. Says the book is mandatory but you could get by without doing the readings. Graded on 2 short papers and the final which is 2 take home 2 pg papers. Not a hard class but I definitely wouldn't recommend, luckily I had a good TA
Class was virtually useless. Saved by my awesome TA, but lectures and reading are literally not necessary. All graded assignments are totally separate and I learned virtually nothing new. Gilmores lectures are rambling, disorganized, and frankly a bit off-putting. If you have the choice, dont take this class with him.
Lecture was disorganized. Gilmore rambled a lot which made it difficult to take notes. All poetry focused - no other texts.
Lectures were incredibly interesting, especially how he delves into the writers' psychology. He does stop and ponder what he's going to say next a lot which breaks my focus when taking notes. Also wished that the syllabus wasn't just poems. One essay, 50% of your grade. One midterm and final, same format - one timed essay. Overall, a cool class.
Midterm, final, one paper. AMAZING professor, insightful lectures. I learned a lot from the class and would def take a class of his again. Tests are fairly difficult so keep up on reading and study a LOT. Section is very helpful in going over the material. Overall thought the class was super interesting and gained a lot from it, really great prof
I Liked hikm
This was his last quarter teaching so his material feels very degraded and he was not present for his material. It was all online and most interactions are through the TA's. It was all essays and his lectures really did not add anything to the work.
There is a essay midterm and final, but a heavily weighted research paper (if you get an A on the paper then you will basically pass with an A or B+). I had a great TA and discussion posts were clear of what was expected.
