He does speak fluent English so that's a plus, but his course design is miserable. He requires you to turn in homework via scanner for subjective grading, which means EVERY HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT IS A TAKE-HOME QUIZ. Because of this, he creates perverse incentives for his students. Web-work is a much better tool for an online class anyway.
The class is very easy to pass, but getting a solid A is difficult because the grading is pretty nitpicky, sometimes resulting in scores slightly lower than you'd expect. If you actually take your time with the online practice quizzes, the tests won't suprise you. Lastly, the book explains the material much better than Carter.
Professor Carter is a great professor. However, sometimes he could take an excessive amount of time to explain topics. Never went to class, just read the book and did his recommended questions that he posted on gauchospace, which I would do because his test were similar to the questions. Overall, easy professor and class.
Really good professor--easy to pass the class if you attend lecture and do the practice worksheets online. No need to buy the book. Really liked this class and even made me think about becoming a math major!
Carter is a chill dude. I mean, yeah, lectures can be a bit...useless, but this guy does try to help his students out. He has live chats and puts up practice problems that are almost identical to the exams. Advice: go to CLAS, don't buy the book and DO the practice problems he puts up. Carter doesn't try to trick you on test questions that's a plus
The class itself is very easy if you do all his practice problems correctly along with the book problems and examples from the reading he assigns. As a professor, he is really bad because the stuff he goes over in lecture is useless 95 percent of the time. I only attend them because that 5 percent is usually critical to get A's on his quizzes.
He's not very helpful. Very dull class. Easy though.
The course material is very easy. If you go to lecture and do the practice problems from the book and the ones he gives you, you can easily get an A or a B on the quizzes. I also recommend going to CLAS for extra practice problems. Lecture isn't absolutely mandatory, but he sometimes uses different equations than the book on the quizzes.
Very inarticulate, and uncomfortable to listen to. Lectures are based on shoddy powerpoint slides. Textbook and lecture never match up. No final or midterms, instead there is a quiz every two weeks. WARNING: grades on a bell curve
Terrible professor. I gain negative knowledge from his lectures and usually don't attend and instead read the textbook. His tests are way too hard compared to the problems he assigns and teaches.
Best Teacher Ever
Good professor. Very clear about his expectations for the class and tests. Fairly straightforward lectures. Gives lots of resources to help you succeed in the class. Tests were mediun/hard, but fair. The class was mostly computations, not much theory (that's a good thing). PUt in some effort and you will do well in his class!
Funny dude. Awesome professor
Good professor. The material is hard and he seems to stretch lectures longer than they have to be. Not a lot of resources for this class, but he gives you all the tools you need to succeed on your own (weekly homework, practice midterms/finals, and their solutions). If you do the homework efficiently you'll be fine.
He's a cool prof, speaks perfect English unlike some other ones. The material was hard, and the midterm and final were really difficult.
He was a pretty decent professor. His lecture notes were online and even though I went to class, it was still nice to refer to them. He gave practice tests but the midterm and final was still really hard. The material itself, however, was extremely difficult, so can't really blame him.
He's a pretty good teacher; just do the assigned HW problems and you should be fine.
His lectures are horrible and unclear.Must go to section and for me, CLAS was a must! If you do CLAS, take it with Austin Chen. He's awesome!
Honestly, I took this class with a different professor last year & Carter was amazing in comparison. I ended up fixing my bad grade because of his approach to teaching. He really does care & has relevant examples to help you learn. Take him, he's one of the best.
Easy class. Others say he's a bad professor, but I think he's a great one! Plus, he loves kittens.
the book is better than him. sometimes even confuses himself during lecture. go to office hrs/CLAS. office hrs and math sections were more productive than the lectures. if possible take it with diff professor
Very good. Puts his lecture notes online, which is very helpful. His lectures are very well prepared and explained. His grading curve is rather generous. I don't think I learned the material all that well, but I doubt I would have learned it any better with a different professor.
Lectures are monotonous but sign up for CLAS and you'll be fine. Still go to lectures because he often times gives formulas and tips that aren't given in the textbook that he wants you to use. He's a nice guy that just seems shy of teaching the class, but overall a smart man and helpful. Do practices online and you should do well on the quizzes.
Very easy class, an easy A. 80% of ur grade r quizzes and no midterm or final. Though he gives u the basic info in lecture, he's really a poor lecturer. Has a creepy obsession with kittens. Like the person before me said, textbooks are totally optional for this class.
