Lectures were completely useless and boring. Made me sleepy every time. Grade depends on papers and participation in section.
The course material is too elementary for a college level history class. You will have studied and learned all of the history taught in the class in past middle school and high school classes and this course doesn't offer more insight than the surface level stuff you already know. Just participate in section and you will do fine.
worst professor I've had: unclear, non-understanding, and closed minded
Fairly easy class for a GE. There is one 8 page paper, the prompt barely gives you enough to talk about to reach the word count, but it's doable. The prof is very passionate and lectures are interesting, however the TA was very unhelpful and created a terrible environment in section. Do not expect helpful comments on papers.
She cares a lot about what she teaches. Out of all the GE's I've taken, this one taught me a lot about the world and important social issues. I was never a big history person before college, but this class really surprised me and it is largely due to Professor Edgar. Very fair assignments, all concept based, no memorization.
Prof Edgar is so cute, and she just loves Russia. The class is easy if you go to lecture. There is one longer paper, a midterm, and a final, and that's it. The midterm and final are heavy on primary sources.
Prof. Edgar is nice and gives fantastic lectures with pinpoints clearly listed in the powerpoint. Attending every class is not so important but you must read. Textbooks are not important. Tests are somehow difficult and need a lot of writing.
She is such a nice lady with a passion for history. Class is midterm/final/ 1 paper/ section. If you read this class is a breeze. She really does want everyone to succeed. Lectures are boring but it really isn't her fault, the class is just boring in general. Section is mandatory so show up and participate and you get a free 20% of your grade!
Prof is actually very nice if you reach out to her. Lectures can be boring (it IS history), but if you pay attention NO textbook reading is necessary (i.e. don't buy it, just go to class). Grade is based on 1 MT, 1 Paper, 1 Final. Exams are all written. Participate the bare minimum in section discussion and your TA will like you. Would take again!
Professor Edgar is an amazing teacher. She truly cares about you as a student and a person. However, lectures can be kinda boring but if you stay on top of readings it's easy to follow. Grade is 1 paper, 1 midterm, Section and a final. Test extremlyyyy easy just READ the textbook and the course reader. She wants to see you pass!!
Dr. Edgar was an amazing professor. There is a lot of information in lecture, but she has a stress-free manner about her, which made it easy to forget you were in lecture. Also, She is probably one of the sweetest human-beings I've ever met! The tests weren't too difficult, and there is 1 paper. Julie Johnson was an amazing TA, and section was fun.
Dr. Edgar was honestly a very sweet and nice woman. It's just that she's not very good at giving engaging presentations/lectures, doesn't really go in-depth, and can be a bit boring/mediocre. Grade 1 MT, 1 Final, 1 Paper, and Section. Her lectures would be a lot more interesting if she incorporated videos/different media forms.
The professor does not know how to teach!!! Theres also so much writing in the class and when it came to writing a paper the criteria was not clearly written and she just expected us to know what we are doing. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER!!!
One of my favourites. Very helpful, easy to learn from if you put in the effort and she's always available to talk. Lectures can be boring but not if you put in effort. Just a nice person
Was not a big fan of this class. Lectures are boring. Tests were kind of difficult. Overall.. not that great of a prof.
Terrible lecturer, very out of touch with students as a whole. I'd definitely suggest reading the textbook (especially since she doesn't go over the entire chapters in lecture). As long as you do so, the tests/essay are pretty easy.
She might sometimes be dull, but that doesn't mean she's not a great professor. She really knows what she's teacher & cares that you learn. Exams are easy if you go to section. Paper was fun. Had no interest in history prior & I'm getting an A. Give her a chance & drink coffee or something before lecture.
She is a really boring lecturer, her slides are equally boring. She reads from her notes while lecturing in a monotonous voice. Don't ever take her class unless you have to. I went to every lecture and did all the readings and still had a hard time on the exam. She doesn't make it interesting whatsoever. She sucks.
WORTHLESS!! Probably one of the worst professors at UCSB she is a disgrace to this school. She will put up five slides throughout the lecture and talk in her mono tone voice. Her exams are very difficult and nothing on the study guide is on there. AVOID !!
she is so boring. just lectures the entire time and when u look around you can catch at least 10 people sleeping. Midterm and Final are essay exams that are very difficult. 7-8 page paper also that wasn't too bad. I don't recommend this class if you aren't very interested in history.
I really like this professor. She doesn't put up a lot of slides so you have to pay attention and take good notes if you want a good grade. Readings are super boring. 7-8 pg paper. Exams are pretty tough - IDs, essays.
this comment was three years ago, i completely agree: worthless lecturer with no interest in helping her students. She is a researcher that seems to have been forced into teaching. There are certain professors that should never leave the library, she is one of those professors. Honestly, the least helpful, worst professor in all of UCSB.

She's very interested in what she teaches and is extremely helpful if you go to her office hours. It's a lot of reading and note taking, but you learn a lot in her class if you can make connections with what she says. Her focus is in Russian history, so any class you have with her might revert back to that a bit, but she covers everything you need.
