For a History major, the class was probably fine. As someone who took it as an elective it was pretty uninteresting and had an obscene amount of reading. There's 2 quizzes, a 15 minute presentation, and a midterm of free response. No final but a 4,000 word essay. High expectations for that paper. Wouldn't recommend as an elective for anybody.

Dense lectures and a ton of reading. Difficult course, but interesting (if history is your thing). Lectures are a bit dry though.

Prof Covo is amazing! His lectures are easy to follow and slides are very clear (he also posts the slides so it's accessible outside of class) Attendance to section is mandatory but not lecture. Midterm is online and he gives two online quizzes that are very manageable! Would 100% take him again if I have the chance and great for a GE.

Most boring and non engaging professor I've had with awful slides. The amount of content covered in 4c is ridiculous, and students are expected to know the context behind tons of historical content while citing over 40 primary sources for the final which is closed book.

The final was absolutely confusing, there was no study guide and we had to write two papers while citing sources. It was on topics from week 3-9, and he expected us to have sources relating to multiple parts of each week.

he talks very fast you might as well not even go to lecture he will move to the next slide before you can even type one bullet point

Great professor who clearly knows a lot and is passionate about his work. I took two of his classes - one was the French Revolution and the other a research seminar - and learned a lot in both. Classes are clearly laid out and tests were graded fairly. Really nice guy who strives to help you succeed.

One of my favorite professors! The system of this class was beneficial. He is very educated and kind. Great professor.

One of the only profs who was clear about the grading criteria and we could expect the same thing every week. Have to participate every lecture (once a week) for points; just do the very manageable readings. Midterm + final were an essay on a book of choice, taking him again next qtr! Easy on the eyes and lenient if you've been participating.

Very interesting course content on a region I don't see much about. Weekly lectures and reading on your own, one live discussion a week. He will ask guiding questions to get people to interact and speak up but if something's unclear he'll explain it. Written or oral (15 min) book report on a book of choice. Easy to talk to and really friendly guy.

His lectures were a little difficult to keep up with, but I ended up reading the book/readings he provided and attending sections (if there were any depended on your TA). The class was not too bad, only two papers and a final that was two short answers. Similar class to AP Euro.

Prof Covo was super attentive and understanding throughout the quarter. He did his best to accommodate for his students and always recognized the class for doing well. There was a lot of material in the lectures, but the readings complimented them well and were worth reading (especially saving quotes to use later on essays!)

*COVID ONLINE* He was a great professor! 2 quarter papers and 1 final where you answer 2 short questions. His lectures were clear and not long. He always congratulated the class on the assignments. He listened to requests from students by posting lecture powerpoints and buying a microphone so we can hear him better. Interesting class!
