Prof. McDonald is a very kind lady, she made sure we understood everything going on, I just personally wasn't as interested as I thought I'd be. Most of the readings were really good, I really enjoyed the books and articles, but I just found lectures boring. Don't let my personal feelings keep you from this class though, def recommend.
weekly readings, don't let them build up! 3 essays total that build off each other (1 pg, 3 pg, 5 pg) with a theme you choose at the beginning of the quarter, so your readings and forum posts are very focused on finding evidence for your writing. prof kate is an amazing lecturer and makes sure you're prepped to succeed in the course. no curveballs!
She really cares for the students, is very accessible and promotes good habits as a student. There are only two simple quizzes and three papers that build off of one another, meaning that you're well prepared for the final when it comes. However, there is a lot of reading in the meantime.
THE best class I've taken. Prof McDonald genuinely cares about her students and wants us to do well in class. Only two simple quizzes and three papers, which she prepares you well for so they are not overwhelming at all. Her passion for Japanese culture really shows through and she has a profound understanding of history. Also the sweetest TAs!
Professor McDonald makes coming to class worth it every time. Her enthusiasm for Japanese history and culture makes you excited to learn. Class is pretty straightforward and not too demanding: 3 short essays that you prepare for all quarter, and 2 easy quizzes. Professor McDonald tells you everything you need to know to do well in the class
Professor McDonald really showed that she was passionate about teaching this course. Most of her lectures were verbal with a few powerpoint slides to supplement her lecture. She is readily available for students as well. In terms of coursework, there are two papers that have to submitted (with 2 drafts) and no final! Overall, awesome professor.
Professor McDonald is entertaining, lively and supportive. She encourages participation and pushes everyone to improve their writing skills. Her lectures are interesting but most of the information is presented verbally so you have to attend lecture and actively listen to do well. A bit unorganized but overall she makes the class worthwhile.
Great class; she's very enthusiastic about the subject and it really rubbed off on us. You do read a lot, but it helps you for the papers-- NO FINAL!
Awesome professor! Cares for her students academically and for their overall well-being. Easy grader and gives good feedback on your assignments that build up to your final project.
Professor McDonald is such a sweet professor. She cares about her students and is passionate about Japanese history. However, class can get boring at times because most of the lectures are verbal.
