Great lecturer. Homeworks were tough. Everything was graded pretty strictly. Final was laughably difficult. Curve was pretty good though. People who don't like Brown probably just don't like physics. He is incredibly intelligent, and obviously passionate about science, and you will learn because of it. You do have to try though.

He is clear on what parts of the textbook to read. HW is similar to exams, if you understand the concepts behind HW questions. My advice: read the book before class. Rewrite your notes right after lecture to process what he said (you will be lost during lecture). Do the hw, alone then with friends. Review the HW keys ASAP. He wants you to pass.

i've never been more confused in a class before. genuinely could only answer half the midterm, not even sure if i did it right -- so different from the practice midterm. hw is extremely tedious and hard. lectures are VERY detailed. good luck if you're in this class with him, you're gonna need it.

Lectured well. Homeworks were tough. Midterm was fair. The final...WTF. It applied the material in ways never discussed in lecture, section, or the book. So everyone did horribly. I got screwed because I messed up on the midterm and there was no way to make it up with this final. Avoid this guy if you can, he doesn't care about undergrad courses.

In 3 years at UCSB Brown is by far the worst professor I've dealt with. He shows no interest in teaching/students and his tests are extremely unfair, completely unreflective of assigned problems. His lectures are ineffective and he is unwilling to answer questions during class. As a biochem major I expect tough professors, but he is unreasonable

I'm still conflicted on this guy. He knows what he's talking about and will shove your head through derivations probably just to see if you can keep up. Not very many examples in class, mostly just hypothetical experiments and the formula you'd get from it. Tough homeworks and exams, but the curve is fairly generous.

He tricked us on the final. He said the final is comprehensive, but as a matter of fact, 80% of it contains the concepts in the last homework assignment. And the majority was chem questions, when it supposes to be a phys final

He is so average that I don't even know how to say. He has zero personality. His tests were hard but he always curved them. Although I found his lectures were kind of helpful, you really need to focus in order not to fall asleep.

He was pretty tough. He lectures really fast and focus entirely on deriving equations with calculus. His tests were hard but the curve was generous approx. 50%.

Looks like the dapple ganger for the guys from Blues Clues. He is super boring, my worst physics teacher, but a gives a really good curve. You wont learn much in his class but can get an A if you try hard.

He looks like Steve from blue's clues. He's got a pretty nice curve although his tests are hard. A decent guy, not very nice but not a jerk either.

Lectures somewhat help and are boring. he goes off with derivatives. basically you have to learn by yourself and with CLAS. first midterm was nothing like the practice midterm. hard final! nicest curve though. I got a F on the first midterm, got an A on the second, did well on the final, and pulled off a B+. Take van koppen

Good lecturer, but spends a lot of the time deriving the formulas which you do not need to know. He explains things well in lecure. Midterms and the final were relatively fair. There is a curve which helps a lot, I got a B thanks to the curve. I would take this professor again if I had a choice, he's better than a lot of other professors.

boring. spends a lot of his time showing derivations of equations when he should be showing us how to use them. not an extremely bad prof but definately not good.

I thought the class was very fair. The average test grade was a C, so the curve was fair, and the final was difficult but not impossible. He was challenging but not impossible. However he always seemed kind of grumpy and wasn't very excited about teaching the class.

This class is probably the most fair chemistry class. The tests are not easy and not too hard. The tests are very similar to Van Koppen's as well as his own. His lectures are rediculously boring and he speaks with a monotone. But hes probably the best prof teaching 1b

Do Van Koppen's practice exams and you will get an A.

He is a relatively easy teacher. His tests are not very hard, and it is curved. So it shouldn't be too bad. He likes conceptual questions too, so make sure to study that as well. Do Van Coppen's practice exam, and you will be fine.
