Thought he was a bit unorganized. lectured for first 3 weeks then rest of the quarter was group projects presenting topics the professor should be teaching more about; especially since the final paper is based on the projects. Takes random attendance w a sign-in sheet. his accent made it hard for me to understand what he was saying sometimess

This class was the easiest upper div soc class I've taken. He lectures for 5 weeks, interesting topic and he usually ended the class early. He passed around an attendance sheet and there was a group project. The presentations last the final 5 weeks and there's one easy take home final essay (3-5 pages).

I love him as a professor, he has been everywhere and has so much experience. Prof Lopez-Alves knows what he's talking about. Will defiantly take another class with him!

Super easy class, never listened to lectures, do the work, show up to all classes and you'll get an A. Extremely boring lecturer with a thick accent but good guy. I missed about 5 classes and got a B bc he takes roll and it really counts toward your grade so make sure you go! 1 group project and 1 final (2 short essay questions)

I have taken two classes with him because I absolutely fallin in love with his teaching methods. he is TOO funny! He allows open book open notes for his midterm and final. THERE IS NO WAY YOU CANNOT GET A GOOD GRADE IN HIS CLASS at least a B even if you do not read. Use quotes for all his exams it WILL boost your grade! TAKE HIM!

Prof. Lopez is a great prof. he has an accent but he clarifies frequently. The class is interesting and he is very knowledgeable. I got an A in the class- just stay on top of the reading, the midterm and final are open book- just know what you are looking for and you will be fine!

He has a strong accent so when taking notes I encourage you to sit in the front. He is very understanding and helpful. Take good notes, do the readings and you'll do fine. No quizzes just attend regularly and prepared. The Mid-term and Final are open book. He is one of my best professors. Gives you the grade you diserve.

Great professor, he really knows his subject. Only a midterm and final both essay format. However, if you do the readings and take good notes, you will do great. A lot of material is covered during class so attendance helps a lot. Overall, he was wonderful I would enjoy taking another class with him.

Prof Lopez-Alves is one of those people you either get or don't get. I think he's hilarious. You'll have to supplement lecture with the readings, but if you do, then his teaching style will be a source of entertainment instead of an obstacle. Seriously, he's a good prof who loves what he teaches. I recommend him.

134 LA, Global Latin American stuff, Not my favorite subject, but an interesting class. The class includes only two tests, essay, and I felt they were graded hard. I really thought I understodd and remebered the lectures and I did not do as well as I thought. Do the readings, and try to understand his humor, and it is fine.

He is a pretty good teacher, though very hard to understand with his accent, he does try to help you to succeed and is helpful if you don't understand the material, he lets you have open book and notes for the test, & at first I didn't like him because he was boring, but towards the end of class he is like a student & just wants to get out of class

I have taken Prof. Lopez-Alvez four times within the last two years. I really enjoy his classes and his style. He has a dry sense of humor taht he incorporates throughout his lectures. His tests are fair and area of expertise is interesting.

what the hell -- this class was incomprehensible. you can not understand him at all. he is so bad at conveying ideas. the class gets visibly annoyed while he lectures because he contradicts himself and makes no sense very often. avoid this professor if you can.

Terrible class. I learned absolutely nothing. The whole class is just reading historical theories and comparing hisotical state formation. It has nothing to do with modernity and every theory is worhtless. The lectures are boring and the sad thing is he knows it. If you have a choice do not take this class. Worst class I have taken at UCSB.

He is a nice guy and really open to students. Sometimes the lectures can drag, but he tries to lighten it up with jokes. He know a lot about the subject and his exams are fair. I would recommend this class.

This class was a special topics course on Globalization, Lopez has an accent that can make it hard to understand, and he rambles like crazy. The books were good, but he was always gone on important days which really sucked. take him i guess if you need to.

I thought this class was great. The class is small and he is very personal with all the students. He tries to lighten up the material with some jokes here and there. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Genuinely nice professor who likes to be around students.
