Very easy A - lectures were posted online, so attendance was not mandatory. Weekly forum posts - as long as you referenced material from textbook & cited correctly you got full points. Midterm & final were open book/note and not timed. I would highly recommend to anyone who needs to fill credit.
I loved this class! May even consider a major in Sociology because the content was so interesting and Professor Tober clearly loves teaching, so lectures are engaging. There are weekly writing posts that aren't too hard to get done and tests are easy.
This has been my favorite class at UCSB so far. Dr. Tober is so passionate about what she's teaching & genuinely cares about how her students are doing. There are weekly forum response posts which seemed hard/annoying at first, but now I kind of love writing them. There was one paper, and the midterm and final are MC and online, no time limit.
I did not get the chance to talk to her personally but it's an easy class. It's cute she brings up her husband a lot, he makes guest appearances sometimes. You can tell she is passionate about her field which makes it easy to connect with the material. I enjoyed reading the chapters in the text, personally. 2 papers, mc midterm and final. Keep up.
I took this class for the area D GE requirement and I highly recommend. Lectures were very interesting, reading was pretty easy (you can just read the summary of each chapter in the textbook and be ok), and the midterm and final had no time limit and was really easy if you watch the lectures.
Lectures are very engaging and made info easy to understand. There was a good amount of reading and note taking needed to do well on midterm and final (MC) but it was interesting. Criteria to succeed was very clear and if you put in an effort you will do well. Weekly chapter reading, one lecture (1hr ish), disc post and respond. Loved Dr. Tober!!!!
This class assigned a ton of writing. Not just writing though, unnecessary writing. You had to write 500 words where 200 would do. It's manageable, but boring, and I (a naturally verbose writer who's usually at the upper length limit) felt the need to pad my writing. I would not recommend, although the class was otherwise tolerable.
Professor Tober seemed really cool, and I wish I could have taken the class in person. The homework/reading load was really manageable and relevant. The textbook was really inexpensive, and we only had to buy the chapters we actually read which was nice. Only one chapter each week to read and the lectures weren't too long. She was super organized.
Professor does not teach at all. She just puts up her past recorded lectures from last year. She's very hard to contact and super rude when you do reach out. She acts like you're bothering her when you're reaching out, and is very unprofessional when contacted. Relies heavily on TA's and lets them take full authority on your grades. Unresponsive.
She does not teach. Uses the same recorded lectures as past quarters. Assigns a lot of reading, most of it difficult theory that is hard to understand then expects you to grasp it yourself from there. Mandatory forum post and forum reply every week ends up feeling like you are writing a (short) essay every weekend plus a paper, midterm, and final
I loved Dr. Tober's lectures and the class in general, but my TA was kinda strict and unclear with what she was grading on.
Dr. Tober's class is interesting and not at all difficult. Her grading criteria is very clear and the class is well structured. The exams connect to textbook readings and lectures, and there is only one (short) paper. There are also weekly discussion board posts. I highly recommend Dr. Tober for Soc1!
Each week there is 1 prerecorded lecture, textbook reading, a forum post responding to a prompt, and 2 responses to classmates but overall manageable. The material isn't hard at all so easy A if you put in the work.
Doctor Tober explains difficult sociological concepts well. This is an UD class, so you have to dig into the readings/lectures, but her explainations make theory digestible and interesting. 2 short writings assigments every week, midterm, paper, and an easy final. Late work gets half a letter grade deduction each day it is late. Take this class!
Dr. Tober is an amazing professor!!! I loved her lectures because she explains things so well. The readings were really interesting and so easy to understand! Weekly forums, 4 paragraph paper, and a midterm/final with open notes and book. Definitely recommend taking a course with her!
Weekly discussion forums from topics of the chapter readings. With the weekly chapter readings are about 1 hr prerecorded lectures. Midterm/final are open note. We wrote an 4 paragraph article about a research study, but the TA's are super helpful and give feedback quickly. It was an easy A and I would def take other courses taught by her.
Dr. Tober was one of my favorite professors this quarter. She is very accommodating and her lectures are extremely interesting. The textbook is very up-to-date and I actually enjoy reading it. Definitely take this class!
Dr. Tober was by far my favorite teacher this quarter. She's very engaging and explains things well, even online. The textbook is easy to read and understand and very up-to-date. I loved this class!
Dr. Tober's class made life easier in such weird times. Her lectures are intriguing & the textbook is probably the most interesting & relatable book I have ever read. If you keep up with the readings & lectures this class will fly by. Weekly discussion posts (instead of live zoom sections) offer great insight & are easy to complete.
Dr. Tober is one of UCSBs best, made me decide to double major in soc. Shes very passionate about what she teaches, and her material is interesting. I think the textbook was the most readable Ive ever been assigned, very informative. She was of my most flexible & considerate professors during remote instruction.
Took this class online during the pandemic and she was VERY accommodating. She is truly passionate about the subject and she also talks a lot about current events in her lectures, which keeps it interesting. Gave one short writing assignment that was 10% of the grade and the midterm and final were very straightforward.
Dr. Tober has been by far the best professor I've had at UCSB. She is very understanding and made Soc 1 a very interesting and easy course to take. Throughout the quarter she was caring and funny, and I would definitely recommend taking her class. The course itself isn't difficult as long as you watch the lectures and keep up with the assignments.
Great class and even a greater professor! You can tell she's really passionate about her work. Really thoughtful and caring. The course was really engaging despite it being remote. Definitely take her class! One of the best professors at UCSB!
Dr. Tara Tober is the best professor I've ever met (on zoom). I truly wish I took her class in person but due to COVID-19 I'm taking her class online. She is sweet and caring towards her students and her lecture video is funny/informative! 10/5 recommend!
