I worked hard for my grade in 107M, but Prof Hirsch made it so none of the work felt tedious. Her comments on essays are very in-depth and helpful, she's really accessible outside of class, and her lectures are engaging and interesting! Great professor and a caring and nice person.
One of my favorite professors at UCSB! She is so helpful, sweet, and cares for her students! TAKE HER WRITING CLASSES! You actually learn useful writing techniques without the extra fluff and the material is not hard. I have taken 2 writing classes with her and got A's both times, attendance is mandatory!
Do the readings because participation matters and you get called in class. She's super sweet! One of my favorite classes taken here!
literally the sweetest and I felt so bad when others wouldn't participate because she really cares and is passionate. class overall is pretty chill/ easy with not much readings and there is always enough time to finish the papers
Professor Hirsch was approachable and understanding. She uses a variety of different writers, novels and movies in her classes. Lectures also included fundamentals of writing and gave in depth feedback. The Final grade consists of three essays, writing responses, and class participation. Overall, my writing improved drastically!
Professor Hirsch is awesome! One of my favorite professors I've had at UCSB. Pretty easy grader, but you are going to have to put a good amount of work into this class, but learn SO much. Really rewarding class, I would recommend it if you're even remotely interested in journalism!
Professor Hirsch was very helpful and accessible. We had three essays in total for the quarter in which she gave detailed feedback on. If you have any experience in academic writing, this class will be a breeze. Topics were slightly boring but extremely clear. Great class.
Very good lecturer and very understanding. Cares about her students and how to improve their writing while making the longer class time enjoyable. Does not assign busy work and assignments have a purpose.
Hirsch is a very understanding a carrying teacher. You write 3 essays for the course and they're relatively easy. You read 3 books. Essay 3 got a little cramped with time at the end. She has mandatory one on one meetings with students during class time.
My writing has improved so much because of Prof Hirsch. She genuinely cares about her students and their growth as writers. Some assignments can be a bit tedious but it's definitely worth it. I can say with confidence that I will be using everything I learned in this class throughout my academic career :)
Greatest teacher yet at UCSB, wish I could have her for more classes. Shes a very thorough teacher nice and understanding and she values good work. Awesome teacher and 100% recommend her! I cant rave enough about her.
Hirsch is the absolute loveliest professor I've had yet here at UCSB. She is caring, sweet, a somewhat tough but very fair grader who gives great feedback, and is always accessible outside of class. She held 1 on 1 student meetings for WRIT1 and they really helped in finding what you wanted to gain from taking the class. Super friendly and awesome.
Prof Hirsh is the best. She's super caring, accommodating, and helpful. 107J is a tough but rewarding class. There's a lot of work outside of class (interviewing, writing, editing, etc.). But hey, what else would you expect from an upper div writing class? If you're going to take 107J, take it with Hirsh!!!
Great professor. Gives a lot of useful feedback. Easy A.
I took Journalism with her and she is one of my favorite teachers at UCSB. You could tell she was passionate about writing and was so helpful on all our assignments. You learn how to write news articles, how to interview people, etc. It may seem scary at first but it was so fun and I learned a lot. She is awesome.
I took her class this quarter and she is so sweet and kind. I used to think I was a good writer and all, maybe a bit too confident that I did not see my own errors, but she helped me improve with all of her feedback. Hirsch is caring and will give you a lot of chances to succeed.
Professor Hirsch was an easy A. I just found her a bit boring because the books she chose weren't that interesting. At the beginning of class I would pay attention to everything but at the end of the quarter I started caring less and less. You can tell that she really tries to make her students participate but it's not mandatory. Would take again.
- Grading is Fair and grades on clarity of each paper - very understanding and works with whatever is best for each student - actually made me want to go to class even though I hate writing - she's really funny and always tries to initiate a good conversation in each class - definitely would recommend her
By far my favorite writing professor. Cute, sweet lady who is very passionate about writing. She wants her students to do well so if you put in the effort, you will get a good grade! She helps you with any problems you are having and gives great suggestions. 3 papers (allows you to revise 1 for better grade), weekly write-ups, and no final.
Very nice professor, never makes the class boring
Hirsch did a great job developing my academic writing, though it was via many writing assignments leading up to the main papers. She lays out exactly what she is looking for on her essay prompts and gives you feedback in the form of project builders. I got A's on all my papers but expect to put time into the planning process. Very nice teacher!
Assigned a lot of reading but can get away with it because she offers movies that you can use instead most of the time. Lectures were boring but she let you miss 2. She is a lenient grader and lets you revise a previous essay to get a higher grade. 3 essays total and about 8 small writing assignments.
She was a great great teacher. Definitely recommend if you want a smart, fun, relatively easy class. Writing is my least favorite subject but never dreaded coming to class. She wants everyone to succeed and will take time out of class to make sure they do. Glad I don't have to take it again but would choose her in a heartbeat. 3 essays, 1 revi
