Love Coburn so much. I took 120B and 131 with her. She's the best professor in the stats department period!
As the lecturer who received degree in psychology, I highly doubt her ability of teaching statistics. Calculation mistakes appeared frequently in her ppt instead of essential steps, which she clearly ignored. The average of mid was 60% with 36 students failed. Although she does give freebies and extra credits, BE PREPARED TO LEARN BY YOURSELF!
50% homework and 50% final project, very clear about the grading critera and very very generous about grades. Super nice prof and an easy A for basically all classes she teaches. Never responds to emails though, so go to office hours/lecture for questions. Great professor and I learned a lot.
Dr. Coburn was great. She's a really nice person overall. Also probably the easiest A you can get in the PSTAT department for every course she teaches. One problem is that she never responds to emails so you have to find her in person during lectures. Take her if you want good grades but don't expect to learn deep into the materials.
Dr. Coburn's PSTAT 120A is one of the best options you have if you want to get A. However it might not dive in as deep as other 120A. The only imperfection of her is that she will never respond to your email. Other than that the class is generous on giving As. section attendance required and hw graded on completion.
Professor Coburn's class is easy and she is a nice person. She is also not a tough grader. However, the lecture is always behind the homework, and she does not respond emails. She teaches way too slow, and we were not able to finish all the materials we need to be prepared for 120B.
Prof.Oh is approachable and organized. Grade is determined by 2 exams (25% and 35%), and 40% hw. One downside is his complicated lectures; the material is not the most difficult if you read the textbook but Prof.Oh's lectures make them seem more complex. The exams were conceptual and much easier than the lectures. The class uses R language.
Professor Coburn is a very easy professor, graded 50% on section attendance and homework (which was graded on completion). She, however, taught the material very slowly and would often lag behind assigned home work. Her in class examples were very simple while the homework was very complex. I didn't learn a lot.
I had Oh for 134 - he's been a good prof. Very accessible through Nectir if you need help on HW. I will say his HWs are VERY long and were extremely difficult as I'm pretty new to Python, but you get 2 weeks to do them and can work with others. Exams are easy and the final is a simple project, meaning I've done much more learning than cramming.
Truly a wonderful person and even more impressive Professor. Nothing but respect and admiration from me!
best in the world
Nicest professor I've met. The grading scheme was very generous with hw being half the grade and only graded on completeness. She is very helpful during office hours. Her implementation of R in the course was most useful too. Especially compared to the majority of the PSTAT department, Dr. Coburn is amazing!
Dr. Coburn cares more about being liked by her students (by handing out As like candy) then she does about teaching statistics. In fact, I am not even certain that she knows statistics. She fails to answer students questions, frequently makes mistakes in class, and her slideshows are near incomprehensible and riddled with errors. review continued
One of the nicest profs out there. She is very understanding and will help you understand the material to the best of her ability. Homeworks based on completion and exams/quizzes are take-home. However, you still must understand the material quite well to do well on the exams/quizzes. Don't be scared to ask questions, she loves questions!
Absolutely one of the nicest professors at UCSB, but not that great in terms of teaching. Lenient Grading. Should be your first choice.
Had a group project. No exam. Topics are quite interesting.
Professor Coburn's kindness was so needed last quarter! She was incredibly helpful and accommodating no matter what kind of difficulties we were going through. She expects you to do well, but will give you the support you need to succeed, unlike so many other professors. Best professor I've ever had.
After a horrendous experience with 120A, I was delightfully surprised by Professor Coburn's compassion. She is a very good professor and even took time to review some 120A stuff that not everyone had learned previously. She even offers extra credit and makes the class easy to pass. Take her if you have the chance. :)
Professor Coburn is super sweet. She gives lots of opportunities for extra credit and freebies on quizzes/homework, and will give extensions if you need them. Her quizzes are kind of hard and you definitely need to go to class, but her friendly demeanor makes up for it.
He's a great professor. I didn't have him for PSTAT 131, but I will say that 131 is notoriously difficult since it's streamlined course by the department. Oh has been exceptional in 134 in terms of explaining material and concepts. Don't expect and easy A but expect a fair course. Keep up with the material and you'll be fine.
Professor Oh is really available whenever you have any questions. His lectures are more about concepts, and the quizzes are based on that. He doesn't talk about coding in lectures but the homework is in python. Therefore, you may need to learn by yourself how to deal with it. However, he will give hints and documentations in the prompt.
Great material. Great HW. However, Professor Oh if you are reading this, please be a bit more specific on what will be on the midterm. You made it seem like it was Heavy Coding exam, when it was mostly 50% theory, and the rest coding. I screwed up my midterm because of this. If I would have known it was heavy theory, I would have gotten an A+. (
Professor Oh is very nice and cares about his students. That being said, his lectures are not very engaging and sometimes he didn't explain hard concepts well, but lecture notes are clear and helpful. Homework is not difficult since there are detailed instructions but be sure to leave enough time for it.
I wouldn't take a class with him again. There were pop quizzes which were difficult, because it was hard to focus on his lectures. The homeworks are very long (lots of coding), but there are only 4 of them with a LONG final project. One midterm and one final project (no final test). Study hard for the midterm to help you get an A in the class.
