Holmes is respondent and a good lecturer. Asynch lectures but make sure to code all demos since theyre removed Sundays. Light workload consisting weekly of a straightforward 10ish question homework and 2 worksheets to be done in your section. Quizzes are multiple choice but questions can be a bit obscure at times. Final was simple and predictable.

Dr Holmes is an amazing lecturer. Her lectures are clear and concise. Homework and worksheet may be challenging but they prepares you for the final. Final was fair. If you did all the homework and worksheet, you'll do fine on final. Overall, 10/10! AMAZING EXPERIENCE

Doesn't teach us how to code but instead grades on picky details that are not relevant. Gives lots of B's and C's. She should be a housekeeper at "holme" not a professor.

This is the absolute worst professor Ive ever had in my entire time being a student. She deletes her lectures where she goes over important code demonstrations (Theres no reviewing). She gives hw assignments where her lectures have minimal relevance to what we were being asked to do. Would not recommend if beginner coder like me.

Decided to switch my major to Data Science because of her (no prior coding experience). Love her accent and teaching style. Do the hw even though it's not mandatory, that's where the small details on tests come from! She's very caring and wants her class to understand the material. Go to class because she doesn't post the code online. luv u dawn

An easy A if you have coding experience but dont expect to learn a lot from her. Class covers little. Old school teaching methods that are far from efficient. She tests you on picky details instead of how well you can code in R. Take with someone else if you can. Shes really nice and caring but I wont take a class with her again.

Holmes was good for PSTAT 10. She was very effective at communicating exactly what was needed with the students, especially during the whole coronavirus situation. She sent probably a dozen emails about the final, which really clarified things. Her lectures aren't too exciting, but you have to go in order to get the code and stay on track.

Always reply quickly and specifically to my questions through emails. Easy midterm with averge of 85% (34/40). No final because of the coronovirus. Overall, I think she is great!

Terrible professor goes on long tirades about material with minimal explanations. Powerpoint presentations contain information which is given to students without making sure to explain any aspect of the underlying concepts. Try to count the number of times she says the word "relational" in lecture 1 week 7. Hint: you won't be able to.

The labs were great. Def helped me learn R but the tests were ridiculously specific about things that weren't that relevant to coding. Also way too against taking pictures of lecture slides or posting stuff online, please come into the 21st century Dr. I wish there was another option for lecturer cause I would recommend them.

Very quiet and slow lecturer; she does teach everything you need to know, but the tests are slightly more specific.

She has slow lectures. But when it comes to the exam it is really detailed. I feel myself have mastered all codes from this class but still cannot get a good grade on the exams. I would say those details she tests on are not important for users of R and SQL, since that compiliers could automatically correct your grammers.

Here test format is definitely strange for a coding class but they're not really that difficult. The midterm was harder than the final which was definitely helpful since it was worth 60% of the final grade. I would recommend taking her if you want to are willing to explore the commands on your own time as well.

I agree she's sweet and caring and all that, but that doesn't make her a good professor. I mean, teaching a programming class using slides printed on paper? She puts very trivial details on exams, which has nothing to do with your understanding of the course materials. Don't take this class with her, try to take it in summer, some Phd may teach.

Prof. Holmes is such a caring and sweet woman. I took 10 as a non-major looking to learn coding and I did. Make sure you go to class as she does not post the lecture slides. Section/lab is mandatory. My only complaint is that you have to finish the lab during section time and the TA barely has time to check everyone's.

She uses really outdated teaching methods. The structure of the class is very inefficient for the material (should be taught more like cs8) She asks tricky questions on exams that make it inefficient at determining knowledge of the material. oddly specific syntax questions about random commands instead of testing overall knowledge of coding or r

Attendance isn't mandatory but lecture is the only resource available. There are no slides posted, study guide, or textbook. Going to lecture, paying attention, and (most importantly) taking good notes, is imperative to passing. Highly recommend you use R markdown to take notes and run code in class.

For me is a great professor who talks softly and gives tests easier. She wont give past quizzes and tests, but if you go to every lecture and take notes carefully it will be a easy class. Oh, also no lectures posted.

Good luck.. She is the only one that teaches this class. She has an amazing accent and if there if you need help but a 65% final will completely mess your grade up. The material is hard to grasp if you do not have prior coding experience. Definitely a good course to take before Python. She curves the class I think.

Hard quizzes, no rubric for midterms and finals.

I'm not really used to her teaching style. She doesn't upload notes online, so go to class. final is worth 60%. do the homework and practice labs you should be fine

The ratings here a bit unfair. She is an amazing professor, very knowledgable and knows how to lecture. Would definetly recommend !

I really liked this class with Holmes. Teaching style is a little weird for a programming class but material is not difficult. Mandatory quizzes in section. She doesn't take attendance in lecture but there's no textbook so you have to be there to get the material. Tests are very similar to practice problems she posts.

Horrible professor ! Ucsb should offer other option for pstat 10. I didn't like her teaching style. Also final is 60% and It can lower your grade from A to C. Oh btw, her final is free response on paper... yea you write your code on a paper.
