Great professor, but few opportunities to get your grade up.
Professor Wei is a great lecturer. Her explanations are very easy to follow and she makes the content interesting and fun. Math 4B is not the easiest, but Wei posts what content each question will cover before each exam, so you know exactly what to study. If you go to lecture and section, this class will be very easy.
Prof. Wei's lecture is really straight forward and her slides are good for reviewing. Honestly her exams need some preparation, but they are not very tough. 80% exams, 20% homework. She posts grade standard after the final. I think only top 20% get A's. In 4b, there's no further explanation for theories behind differential equations.
I don't know why Prof Wei is rated so low, they're a very easy grader with all exam question topics clearly outlined. I skipped all my classes and then used an anime girl chatbot to study for the midterms and got near perfect scores. Heard their lectures were a bit confusing but that's about it.
When I went into this class, I was a little bit spooked by the RMP reviews. However, after a little bit of being in this class, I really like it. Easy lectures and the professor clearly cares about improving and making her class a clear and fair experience. Of course, MATH 4B is going to be difficult, but study and you will be perfectly fine.
Maybe Prof. Wei used a different grading system in the past, but Math 4B in W24 was reasonable. Tests are reasonable, lectures are good, and quizzes are normally reasonable. Lectures can be a bit hard to understand, but she posts everything. Easy to piece together yourself. Would take again over some other math profs. Rating 4 to boost.
** rating for MATH 4A. Wei is extremely difficult to understand during lecture. I completely self taught myself linear algebra, & going to CLAS saved me. Her lectures are useless. Midterms are 40% and the final is 40%, with the other 20 being HW -- ridiculous grade breakdown. Also did not inform students of the letter grade breakdown as it was TBD
The weekly homework in this class is tough; you get unlimited chances though. The biweekly quizzes and the midterm are similar to the homework, but then the final absolutely murders you, and shell curve the final grade down. For my class she didnt drop the lowest quiz/hw grade on time, which left things on an irresponsible note.
Prof. Wei changed grading eventually and I got what I expected. Lowest scores were manually dropped, and grades were given fairly. So to be fair, I think the overall course deserves 3-4 out of 5. But I'm not sure if grading would be tough next time.
The final was so unreasonably difficult. It was nothing like the practice problems in the textbook, the homework, or lecture examples. I got so many points off because of tiny errors and it really messed up my grade. Also what kind of professor curves down?
I didn't even know curving down was a thing until I took this class. I took this class during COVID so it was much more difficult to concentrate, however I did not feel that I could learn a lot from her lectures anyway; everything I learned was on my own. I seriously do not recommend, not even as a last resort. Take it at a CC if needed.
A pretty good professor overall. The down curve and not dropping the lowest HW score initially caught a lot of us off guard but I'm glad everything was fixed in the end. Quizzes and midterms are similar to lecture problems and HW is on webwork with unlimited attempts. Honestly one of the better math profs, but be careful of the grading scale.
She is a good professor and is knowledgeable. The accent isn't a problem for me at all. She adjusted the grading scale because the class average was too high for her. She also didn't drop a hw like she said she would on the syllabus. I feel like most profs try to accommodate student's needs during this pandemic but she did the opposite.
Lectures are great, quizzes and homework are not difficult. I messed up my final so I expected to get a B+ (I got my homework and quizzes around 95%), but she messed up grading. She didn't have time to drop the lowest score of homework manually, which she promised in the syllabus; and she didn't make up for our loss but curved down (95+ A, 90+ B)!
Terrible terrible terrible. Curved down the entire class a ridiculous amount. To get a B you needed a 88%. Can barely understand her because of the accent, does not communicate with students, and even changed her mind about the syllabus on the last day grades were due in a way which hurt her students. Do not take any of her classes
She's a great lecturer but really messed up the entire class with grades. The final was significantly harder than anything seen in the class (not even sure we learned some of the stuff), she didn't follow her syllabus and drop assignments, and curved down the class! Still have no idea why profs punish students for doing well. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND
She's pretty good throughout the semester. Quizzes and midterms were straightforward and easy if you know what you're doing. Final was much more difficult, and she curved our grades DOWN. If you want an A be prepared to score near-perfect on every test bc she might lower your grade.
Class was pretty straightforward material wise. However, the professor is terrible. I did not understand anything from her lectures. She also rounded everyone's grade down. She also said in the syllabus she would drop the lowest hw but did not live up to that promise. The rounding down is completely unforgivable since I earned my grade.
Frankly say, professor Wei did a good job in Math 4b class. Her accent is not a big problem and she covers every question raised by her students. Accessableduring office hour, and offers a lot of help to solve student's confusion. Students are graded by homework, quizzes, mid and final. Trust me, listen to lecture carefully and these won't be hard.
I did great on quizzes, hw, and the midterm. I was expecting at least a B but the final was so much more difficult, compared to everything else. Did not drop lowest hw score either, even though stated in syllabus. I learned more form CLAS and section than the actual lectures.
From previous reviews, I was scared that Prof. Wei's accent would be an issue but her accent is actually ez to pass through/understandable. You get 10 questions per homework (rare to see limited attempts) per week--aka a chill class in terms of workload. Her bi-weekly quizzes are straightforward & if you took calc bc, this class is a good review!
While her lectures are straightforward once you get past her accent and the tests are fairly okay, I'll never forgive her for curving the class DOWN at the end of finals because the average was higher than she wanted.
Absolutely could not get past her accent. Iclicker was graded for correctness, which is very stupid. So was hw, and you only got limited attempts on it. So both were more like quizzes. Bright spot is that exams are fairly straightforward and if you study the slides and the hw you should be well prepared for them. Would not take her again though.
Professor Wei is a professor who you can tell cares about the success of her class. I truly appreciated her lectures being available on Gauchospace, which is something I have rarely had in Math at UCSB. She does a fine job teaching the class and the midterms and final were fair and to her prior hints. If you try hard you will do fine.
