Super nice teacher, take advantage of office hours! Try to at least skim the reading, because there are a LOT, but worth taking!

BLST 49A with Professor Chikowero was an eye-opener of a class. A few lengthy readings due before each lecture, weekly assignments and the occasional quiz, an 8 page research paper, and the final of course. Very informative and humorous in lecture, grades fairly, and encourages questions. Lots of writing required, but amazing learning experience!

Wouldn't recommend taking this class as a GE because of how much work and reading goes into it. They said that class was mandatory but didn't enforce it, I only had a couple of sections that weren't cancelled as well. Fall 2021 might've been a weird quarter for the professor and TA's, but this class was so difficult that it was unapproachable.

This class was easy but boring so it's easy to get behind. I barely went to lecture or section and still passed. The final was easy but the class is honestly disorganized and the grading criteria makes no sense.

Extremely unorganized. He never made assignments clear and it was hard to understand what he expects you to do. Way too many readings. 8 page research paper with no clear instructions, not even a rubric. He said you have to read textbook for final, but final was not even that much based on the textbook. Would not recommend this class, too much work

The class isn't very organized and it kind of goes by how he is feeling the day of lecture. It's very content heavy and a lot of the homework and quizzes are based on your interpretation of the weekly readings (which are a lot). No midterm but a 8-page research paper and the final was completely based on the textbook.

I had him Fall of 2020 and his class seemed intimidating but it was so doable. You can easily skim the reading as class begins and when in section discuss/piggyback off of others statements to get participation credit. The weekly writing responses are very straightforward and leave a lot of room for expansion. The lectures are not needed to do well

Unorganized class and readings are long.

Prof. Chikowero was a tough grader. He would never specify what he wanted in our papers and would send out assignments very late notice. He is very unorganized and would change our due dates. He also doesn't use GauchoSpace so you spend the whole quarter guessing what your grade is. I highly don't recommend unless you want to be stressed out.

Tbh, very inconsiderate professor. Sends homework assignments very last minute and expects you to check your emails throughout the weekend. Cancelled class for a full week right before our research papers were due & wasnt even accesible through email due to limited internet access. Also a tough grader. Not worth taking his class.

Cool dude. The content was pretty interesting but he requires lots of reading and homework. One paper on the topic of your choice and a final but no midterm which was nice. He's also hard to get in touch with outside of class and is rarely in his office when he says he will be. Don't take unless you're REALLY interested in the topic.

Took this class as a GE requirement: big mistake. Lots of repetitive readings conveying the same general idea of colonialism and it gets old. Class was kind of interesting, but the amount of work required is not worth it. He graded critically as well. Overall, avoid this professor unless you absolutely love learning about colonialism; not an easy A

If youre just taking his class for the GE requirement, take something else. Theres so much reading and small responses to do its almost like Mhoze and the TA forget we have other classes. Great guy, super approachable in office hours, but really just expects too much

His lectures are interesting, however they tend to not correspond with the readings. The class is graded on papers and a take home final, with pop quizzes thrown in. The assignments are unclear, and he is extremely disorganized.

Prof. Chikowero is a great guy and keeps lectures fun, even if they don't relate to anything you need for tests or papers. I learned a ton from him and he really challenged the norms of history, which was great. His class is hard because he expects a lot from every student.

Professor Chikowero is a brilliant lecturer and really forces you to think and challenge your preconceived notions about the world. This class requires a lot of reading and includes a few rather long papers plus weekly 1-2 page assignments. Show up to classes so that you don't miss pop quizzes and lecture material. Very funny and genuine person.

Chikowero is a knowledgable and caring teacher. The class had weekly writing assignments that weren't graded toughly, which was nice, but he is very confusing

I absolutely love Dr. Chikowero. His classes are taught from a refreshing perspective that enlightens his students about the history of the continent. He's also very approachable and kind in office hours and a really funny guy, I highly encourage going to talk to him. He wants his students to do well and he's not trying to throw any curve balls.

He is incredibly disorganized. He does offer a lot of help in office hours. I would not recommend taking a course with him unless you are really interested in African History specifically.

Great professor and easy to talk to. Extremely knowledgeable and eager to help his students understand the material. Changed my perspective on African history and on other histories I have studied before.

Professor Chikowero is one of the most helpful and easiest professors at UCSB. If you wish to do well in his class, GO TO HIS OFFICE!You can catch him in his office and he is ready to spend a great deal of time to clarify and aid in whatever material you find confusing. Super chill to just talk to about anything and have a few good laughs.

This class depended heavily on the discussions made by the TA. CHikowero was highly disorganized and the lectures seem to barely touched the readings. At one point, he tried change the grading system six weeks after the course started. The course only made sense because of the TAS and not the actual professor. Don't take it him.
