I started out at UCSB as a freshman English major and I've had a LOT of English teachers over the years. She was definitely my least favorite. She was just very disrespectful in a lot of ways, such as the way she would scribble illegibly on your papers. For what I'm paying for these classes, she should at least take the time to write clearly.

I've had about 20 teachers at UCSB, and now that I'm no longer a student there I can honestly tell you that she was my least favorite. She just seemed very lazy with her reviews and comments on papers and during office hours she always had one eye on the clock. She also spent as much time bad mouthing her fellow professors and she did teaching.

To be honest, I did not like this teacher at all. she needs to keep her politics out of her lectures. You feel like if your political views don't match hers, it will hurt you at grading time. Also, a well-known secret of her classes is that you need to go to office hours every week. Your grade will suffer if you don't.

OK teacher. Definitely not the best the school has to offer. She complains too much about the department chair. If you want an A, you ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY must attend office hours every week and have her proof your work as much as possible. What you think is a great paper is probably not what she is looking for. You've been warned.

Probably one of the best professors at UCSB. Kay Young has a real passion for what she does, she will challenge and inspire you. Don't miss the opportunity to take a class with her before graduating! Be ready to read a good deal, and attend most (if not all) lectures!

Take any class you can from this professor! She is truly inspirational. This class was the best one Ive taken in college. Only two essays and the final includes two more handwritten essays, and passage identification for the different novels. Also have to memorize the first sentence from each novel. Great class and great books!

By far one of the best professors at UCSB. I took her ENGL 170CM class and it was truly life changing. Participate in lecture and spend some time writing a 5-10 page midterm paper and a 10-20 page final paper but I promise neither of them are bad. I always read my final paper if I ever need inspiration. Amazing woman! I am honored to know her :)g

Take this class! Prof. Great material, never boring. Only two assignments that control your grade, but do-able.

Professor Young's lectures are insightful and life-changing. She connects literature to the most profound thoughts about education and life as she creates an environment that allows you to think on a level you never thought possible.

Professor Young is by far the best English professor at UCSB. She has high expectations for writing, but will work with you tirelessly to help you get to those expectations. She truly will open a window into Jane Austen's mind and will also open a window into yours. I wish I could take this class again!!!

The most AMAZING professor I've ever had at UCSB! So extremely helpful and passionate about her work. HIGHLY recommend taking any of her classes! You MUST read! Lots of writing though, so be prepared! If you're the type of student that's passionate about English, you need to take her class. Don't take this class if you just want credits!

Excellent professorclass! Reading list includes every author you've always known you should read but never really had an occasion to: Marx, Freud, Nietzsche, Darwin, and more. Take this class if you want to contemplate the meaning of life every week for 75 min. One midterm, one final, and a 7-8 page paper. Discussion heavy. Young is great!

Young is very challenging but she is generally clear about what she expects from you. The tests are not easy, I highly advise speaking with her prior so that you can earn a good grade. The material in this class is absolutely wonderful, as are her points in lecture. Love this class!

Prof. Young is amazing! Never read an Austen novel, but Young made me love the author. 2 papers, and one final. The final literally took the 3 hours for almost everyone in the class. However, don't let that scare you off. You can sparknote the books and pass with flying colors.

By far, toughest English class I've taken at UCSB. Though the material wasn't my cup of tea, she introduced all sorts of amazing ideas and the discussions in her class were always quite lively. Exams and final paper were completely fair as well--tough grader, but it is not difficult to do well if you read and attend lecture.

Great professor, perhaps my favorite of UCSB's English Dept. A good discussion leader, offers creative interpretation of the text and provocative discussion questions-- additionally, Prof. Young is a huge help at office hrs, eager to help committed students and thinkers.

the meaning of life is not having to search for it...like being in a small dark room with an unsuspected flashlight by your side...great professor...however...she defines sense through her own rigid definition

This woman is filled with Genius! Go to class and TAKE NOTES. That's what she grades on. Her teaching style might be odd, because she introduces idea's but you need to complete them, that's what she looks for, that you're thinking. But a very very intellectual and fun class. Great help at her office (she likes that)

She is an honest grader and provides invaluable feedback, seeming to be genuinely interested in her students. She has an huge passion for the subject matter and inspires you to constantly strive towards personal betterment.

I loved her class. Her lectures were often tedious, but her enthusiasm is great. Her reading selections were perfect and interesting (but if you aren't interested in the specific subject or you'll probably drown.) The take home final was horrifically hard, but she does not hesitate to give "A"s to anyone does the work, and she is so kind.

Outstanding, energetic, knowledgeable, inspiring, so full of life. Not a boring moment in her classes. I had to work hard and she grades a bit hard due to her Harvard background, but she is well worth the challenge. I have been to several colleges and never had a professor as brilliant as her.
