Professor Duque is an amazing teacher who really cares about his students. ED 150 is a fun class to take. We explored what makes a good teacher/what does good teaching look like, as well as sticky problems you find while teaching. Prof is energetic and connects with students. Work is easy and grading as well. No final or midterm for us.
Stay away unless you want a lot of busy work.
Prof is very unorganized and assigns so much busy work. The amount of time each assignment is exhausting because of the rushed lectures, no clear guideline and amount of work given sporadically. Although the material is interesting, it is dense to grasp when the assignments given seem random. Not worth the time put in, this is a minor class!
Prof Duque is the most contradicting teacher I have come upon. He advocates for students to take care of themselves and seek help, especially now, but piles on more work than all of my classes, including other ED classes. He gives a lot of reading, quizzes, busy work, and writing. Grades very late, then gives bad grades with no feedback. Terrible.
The best professor I ever had at UCSB. He cares deeply about his students and for the subjects he teaches. Some people were uncomfortable with his lecture style because he does play "devil's advocate" a lot but this is because he wants you to think critically. Attendance was mandatory but so interesting and inspirational if you care about it.
GOAT. Such an inspiring person who makes it obvious that he genuinely loves what he does. Made an effort to get to know and interact with us, and structured his lectures in a way that always felt safe and inviting to new perspectives. Lots of short HW assignments throughout the week, but graded off completion + 1final project. He is the best :)
Honestly the best professor I have ever had. Mr.Duque is truly passionate about what he teaches and it really shows during his lectures. Only 9:30am I have been excited to attend. I learned a lot and developed a new passion for education. Grading is super clear and easy, no midterm or final. Short assignments that take 2hrs a week. LOVE HIM!
Jason is the best professor I've ever had. Yes, there is a lot of busy work but it's easily doable. He is the most inspirational person I have met and I love how he makes our class think critically. This is the only professor that I have met who does truly not take sides, usually, you can tell but not with him. I cannot recommend him enough!!!
A lot of busywork with tight due dates (assignments due Tues/Thurs/Sat/Sun, activity Fri). Try to get as much done as possible, it takes ~3-6 hrs total. The work isn't difficult and isn't graded too harshly. There were a few technical issues and the professor does not respond to student emails, so email the TAs instead.
Duque is such a caring and funny professor. The main problem people have with him is that there are short online open-note quizzes due before every class and reflections due every Friday and Sunday. If you can get over that, this is such a breeze, I could not recommend it more!
So much busy work and he doesn't talk about anything useful at all
So much busy work.
Professor gives enthusiastic lectures and the materials are inspiring. However, the workload is TOO MUCH. 2-3 quizzes a week, a very long learning report per week, 2 lectures, 1 section, and so many readings. If you don't mind the heavy workload, take this class.
Best Professor I've ever had. VERY organized. Yes, he is a late grader, but he looks at everyone's work and gives excellent feedback. He cares about his students, so talk to him if you have any concerns about anything. If you feel you've done your absolute best, but you feel the grade he gave you does not show, talk to him! Clear instruction!
It was passed the last day of instruction and still had bo clue what grade 80% of my assignments were. On top of that will grade your work harshly if your ideals arent from white perspectives. Old lectures and readings and videos so I question what he gets payed to do ?
.
Late grader. You wont know your grade before final week. Even I did any task and still got that grade. Dont take his class if you want to drop your GPA.
Topics often are redundant. Slow grader. Speaks to and passed that last minute of class. Follows an extremely abstract theory of thought. We spent several class periods playing two truths and a lie. Would not recommend it.
Too much busy work! Late grader so you dont know how youre performing until finals week. Very disorganized and lectures are drag on with no clear intent.
Professor Duque is a really nice guy and overall caring professor. I just really didn't like the amount of work we had to do every week, it got repetitive and didn't really feel applicable to the course.
Absolute favorite professor at UCSB. His teaching is a bit unconventional, but it's more geared toward learning than memorizing. The conversations are interesting and stimulating. Takes a bit to adjust to his format, but it's totally worth it! I want to take him for every ED class!
