Chen laoshi is an excellent professor. She is a prime example of a teacher that truly cares for her students and wants them to succeed. Her class creates a comfortable environment that encourages students to speak chinese. In terms of coursework, she assigns chracter exercises for each unit and there is an exam every two units. Would def take again
Learning Chinese is hard work, but I always look forward to going to Chinese class. Chen laoshi gives lots of homework and there are many quizzes and tests, but do them if you really want to succeed. She will make you talk in class, but it is essential and she won't ever embarrass you over pronunciation. She is very nice and wants you to do well.
tries to help students as much as possible. makes corny jokes, but its cute. obviously hard because its learning a new language. but just study the characters & youll be fine. must do all assignments. must attend oral review sections for points also. overall pretty easy.
Chen Laoshi is amazing! You can tell she cares a lot about her students and always comes to class with a smile on her face and an impressive amount of energy. Only had 3 tests during the quarter (and final project in addition to final exam), homework was easy, and she almost always accepted late work. Overall great class and phenomenal professor.
Chen laoshi is such a kind professor. She calls her students her "children". She is extremely energetic and hard working. You will get your grades back quickly. Sometimes, she moves a little too quickly, but she's always ready for feedback. Definitely go to her office hours and the events she plans. She also gives you reliable study guides!!!
I LOVE Chen Laoshi!! Regardless of whether you have any experience with the language, she'll meet you where you're at and answer any questions you have. I self-studied a bit before the class and found the order in which we were learning things a little odd in the beginning, but outside of my pickiness, I've really enjoyed the class :)
Chen laoshi is an amazing teacher to learn a new language with. She makes sure that each student has an opportunity to participate and practice what they learn. She gives lots of feedback in and out of class too. In general, she creates a very friendly environment for the students. She made this quarter fun and informational despite being remote.
She is the sweetest thing, she really cares for her students and she even hosts events like hotpot night. She gives rewards, prizes, snacks. The class has a lot of HW but if you turn it in on time it's basically an A. Tests are easy and straight forward. I look forward to her class every day, its a nice break from other lectures.
There is a lot of busy work associated with this class, would not take it with too many other units. She is really sweet and nice and wants you to succeed. Try to come to class so you know when stuff is due. Gives study guides that are basically the tests. Easy A, just put in the work for the assignments and participate in the class.
Really sweet and caring. Can be a *bit* scatterbrained and disorganized, but it's very minor. She wants every student to succeed in the class, and tries to get everyone to participate. The tests are very easy and doable if you just come to class and do the homework. A lot of homework and frequent tests. Gives you cultural studies exercises too.
The sweetest, most respectful, and most accommodating professor I've had at this school! She deeply cares for her students and knows how to teach them in ways that make the material really stick in your mind. Textbook is necessary, but she'll give you copies of the hw worksheets. Frequent tests and homework. Teaches the entire 1-3NH sequence!
Very nice and understanding! Creates a comfortable environment that encourages students to speak Chinese without being afraid of getting embarassed. For 1NH, you definitely need to get the textbook (ok if used) and student activities manual (should get new because it's hw). You can save $ by not getting the character book b/c she gives out copies.
GREAT teacher. Obviously you have to go to class everyday or you will do poorly. She gives out study guides for tests and tells you what will be on quizzes. Very supportive and easy to go to for help. There is homework and some group projects. Overall, great language class because Chen Laoshi is there to help you. If you try, you will do well.
Bella is very nice, the week of the tragedy she pretty much gave out all the answers to an upcoming test because she knew many students hadn't studied. As for the courses themselves, CHIN 1-3 each pack an insane amount of tests, quizes, hw and projects into their last 2 weeks. Be very careful in deciding if you want to commit to 3 quarters.
Chen Lao Shi is the best professor. I was fortunate to have her teach me throughout Chinese 1-3 and I honestly cannot ask for a better teacher. She's so helpful, funny, kind, and respectful to her students. She makes attending everyday for 50 minutes worthwhile. I not only see her as a wonderful teacher, but a role model/mother figure as well.<3
By far one of the most influential and helpful teachers at UCSB. I took Chinese 1 simply because I thought it might be kinda interesting and she got me to not only continue, but minor in Chinese. I changed my entire college path simply because of her teaching. I highly recommend her and dont think I have had a better teacher in any department.
It is Chinese 1: it's going to be difficult and a lot of work. Chen is funny and is very helpful. She tells you everything on the quizzes and tests, so to do poorly you seriously just do not work. To do well, just go to class everyday and DO THE ONLINE QUIZZES
Really fun and helpful instructor. She gets everyone in the class to participate, and is very lively and funny. Workload is light, but consistent.
Great Professor. Passionate about what she teaches. Definitely take Chinese with her. Class is easy as long as you put in the time, it's a language class.
Chen Laoshi is a fantastic teacher. Her explanations are crystal clear and she will answer any questions with informed answers. She lays a good foundation for Chinese by constantly correcting your pronunciation. A very sweet lady with a great sense of humor. Take Chinese with her!
Excellent lecturer. She wants you to get an A and also learn the material. The class is very interactive and she likes teaching fun things in addition to the course.
She makes the class VERY interesting. Homework is assigned pretty much every week and consists of repetitive character sets. Weekly quizzes are also given on the characters studied the week prior. The class is easy enough, but focus on remembering how to write the characters. I HIGHLY recommend taking her above any of the other teachers! :)
There is no way that you don't get As if you put your efforts in the class. Just do the homework and spend 15-20 min/day study the characters and you'll pretty much get 95+ on her exams.
She's the best! Makes class fun and you become a sort of family
