Great professor and made me love chem and made everything we learned interesting! Applied chemistry to real life. Also he says he doesn't curve, but if you go to class everyday and do all the ALEKS he will give you a slight grade boost in the end.
Idk what all these people are talking about. I studied super hard, went to CLAS with Eric (who is great). And still did not do well. Tests are out of 20 questions so missing a few questions here and there will screw you over. No curve as well. Pretty brutal. Be good at chem naturally or perish. Kids who took AP in high school will be ok.
Take Laverman, this was a great class! He gave very fair tests. I studied 1-2 days before and succeeded. Go to CLAS though, thermochem is confusing regardless of the teacher... Also, Laverman is really friendly and willing to answer your questions after class!
Laverman is a great professor. Very approachable guy and clear lectures. Midterms and finals are fair--so long as you do enough practice problems from the textbook, you'll be golden. The final was mucher easier than expected, and he gave a nice curve at the end. I got an A- with an 87%.
I really liked professor Laverman. His class was interesting and he had an almost pathetically easy final. Overall I'd say if you want to learn the material but don't want to have to study like crazy for the class, take Laverman. I never showed up to class but always did homework and studied before every exam and got an A.
Laverman is a very straightforward professor. His lectures are actually quite helpful and he sometimes adds something extra to the ppt that will b on the exam. You don't need the derivations but he does show you how to derive the formulas. Overall, good professor though i wish he would have clarified wen to use certain formulas better.
Coming into this class, I had heard that Laverman was not the best. But now that I have taken it I would recommend him as a professor to anyone taking general chemistry. His teaching is very clear and his tests are straightforward. He is also very approachable, and you can tell he wants his students to succeed. Overall great professor!
Overall an excellent professor. His lectures were clear and provoked interest in chemistry. His tests are not too difficult, but you definitely need to attend class and study if you want to do well.
At first 1B seemed difficult, but got easier. Exams and quizzes are very fair and I would recommend this professor for anyone taking chem 1b
Wonderful, clear, and good natured. Exams are fair, no tricks or traps.
Knows his work, and is very helpful. About the same difficulty as my AP class. He does not curve but is reasonable and nice with grading. Very nice teacher, especially during his office hours.
Not that great of a lecturer, my high school AP Chem teacher can teach better than him. His demos are fun and interesting, so that's a step up from other teachers. But his tests are difficult and all multiple choice, plus no curve. Some people find mc tests easy, some did not. so up to you. overall, i wouldn't recommend as first choice.
This professor is a very intelligent man however he does not teach as well as some of the other professors that are available. He DOES NOT CURVE TESTS OR CLASS so it makes it that much harder. Not to mention that his tests are fairly difficult.
Laverman is an EXCELLENT teacher. He's one of the best profs I've had. His tests ARE hard and you definitely need to study for them. Attend lecture cause iClicker counts! His class demonstrations are great and they keep you engaged. I would recommend him to anyone, specifically biochem and chem majors.
He's a good teacher!!
This lab was time consuming and difficult (conceptually), yet simplistic (applicability). Professor Laverman is fair and good at what he teaches.
Check and compare homework, it can save you in the end. Multiple choice on tests kill. We had one quiz, and it's bad if you don't read before the week's lectures. Seek help, use office hours! Some concepts in lecture are not tested. First midterm (fundamentals) seemed easier to me. Work the harder problems to study for tests.
Great teacher. Homework is due each week, so he really wants you to learn. He is very understanding and wants people to do well in his class. First tests is hard, but the second test is better. If you do your homework and do decent, its not hard to pull off a B. If you get an A on the final, you get an A in the class no matter what.
Laverman is a G. Don't expect to cruise by tho, he actually makes you learn the material and UNDERSTAND THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE ANSWER- something necessary for chem-biochem majors. His tests can be hard but they are reasonable for the amount of time he is willing to spend to help you and the quality of his lectures. Highly recommend him.
He is one of the most helpful profs ... Perhaps the only one in UCSB who will encourage you to stop by his office any time... OH or not.. His understanding of the subject is so nice... he can make it crystal clear for you. Tests are fine, if you are slow and steady. He is one of the BEST profs I have ever had so far...

He is very willing to Help, but his tests are killer...
Great teacher, very clear and willing to help. Don't hesitate to go to his office hours, they are extremely helpful. The tests are difficult.
