CHEM1C . Anyika M 2 Years Ago

As much as I enjoyed taking this class with Dr. Mercy, passing was probably one of the hardest things I've ever had to do, despite getting excellent grades in both Chem 1A and 1B.

This is the worst professor I have had here so far. If you manage to get into her Chem 1C class prepare to work 3 to 5 times harder than you have with any other professor. She grades with no partial credit and puts trick questions on her exams. It is almost as if her goal is to fail as many students as possible and cry. Take Joseph!!

I regret taking Anyika. This class was brutal, it was all test heavy, 3 quizzes were only 25 min and extremely hard. The midterms were both free response and multiple choice, some super hard questions would be worth 7-10 points and would not be given partial credit. She doesn't explain well and class is essentially set up for you to fail.Take Joseph

Anyika has never taught Chem1C before and it shows. Lectures mandatory bc of iClicker points and most information not on the slides. I genuinely have never struggled this much in a chem course in my life. Test points were weighed so unevenly I would miss one question and drop a letter grade. She had super hard quizzes which ate into free ALEKS pts

Lectures are essentially mandatory since she posts incomplete slides. Quizzes are hard and take away from easy ALEKS points, and questions on tests are scaled unevenly, with some questions being worth 7-8 points and others 3-4. Tests have free response and multiple choice questions, no partial credit. Possibly the most stressful class I've taken.

I did not know I could feel this defeated, miserable, and disappointed by a class. I have never had a teacher who truly seems to set her students up for disaster and misery. She takes away points from almost everything, scales tests weird, and makes you work twice as hard. Her class is insanely draining, hopeless, and terrible. TAKE JOSEPH.

This class was pretty rough. I would say the midterms were about 20-30% harder then the ones I took for Price and Joseph for chem 1a and 1b. Also, the quizzes were kind of rough too but they were only like 5% of the grade and one could be replaced with iClicker points. The instruction was decent overall definitely not 1 level.

No matter how much you study, she always finds a way to ruin you. Quizzes are way harder than the book problems; exams have questions on things she didn't teach/spent 1 minute on in class + confusing unit conversions. To get you to attend lecture, she purposefully leaves info out of slides. There's an extra midterm on the last day of the quarter.

She grades very harshly, with the most difficult questions on tests being worth 10% of the whole test with no partial. She has graded iclickers and also takes a part of the Aleks percentage to make quizzes that are ridiculously hard. The quizzes have new types of questions about topics she just covered.

Her lecturing is not the best but it's practically required to go because of graded iclickers. She also takes a percentage out of the Aleks grade to give really hard quizzes with brand new types of questions. Her tests are also graded very harshly with the most difficult questions worth 10% of the whole quiz no partial.

you have to put in immense amounts of effort in order to do barely average in this class. After studying all materials, reading the textbook, and doing all the book problems, I still found it very hard to succeed. She struggles to teach clearly and always sounds very jumbled in all of her lectures. She sets you up for failure on her tests.

This class was absolutely draining. If you didn't watch another professor's lecture/read the textbook before class, you will be lost in lecture. I did all the book problems, Aleks, reviewed notes, and practice midterms but did the worst in her class. Her exams are unfair, some questions are worth 10 points, others worth as little as 3 points.

This is undoubtedly the most frustrating class I've ever taken. It does not matter if you understand the material perfectly; there is a high probability that you will get Cs on the midterms anyway. Her grading scale is godawful and she looks for ways to take off points. It's legitimately so annoying. Don't take this class if you value your sanity.

I've had different professors for the gen chem series and Anyika by far the worst one. She teaches the simplest concepts in class and makes quizzes and tests so much harder. This would be fine if she was a good teacher but she's not so there is no balance. Not very accommodating and helpful when questions are asked. Avoid at all costs!!

i've never met a professor that actually wanted her students to fail. her grading is very unfair, she takes easy points out of ALEKS to put into timed/difficult quizzes that drop your grade, uneven point distribution on tests, and very rude/unhelpful whenever you try to email for help. I worked twice as hard and long in this class only to struggle

I am currently taking professor anyika for chem 1C and she is great. She is funny yet strict, with an emphasis on book problems, iclicker, exam practices, and quiz practices. If you do the problems for these four categories there is no reason not to do well in her class, they copy practically for the exam. She does not try to trick you! I love her!

I loved Mercy so much and I am taking her again for 109B!! She is the sweetest professor and actually cares about her students and wants them to like what we are learning. She does not try to trick you and is very clear about the quizzes and is so open to taking extra time to answer questions! She is so funny too!! Love my girl mercy <3

She is the sweetest lady! Like the others said, she was adjusting to the quarter system and had to rush towards the end of the quarter, but overall was really good. The most notable aspect of her class is that her tests and quizzes are FAIR! She never tries to trick you, but simply expects you to come knowing the material that she teaches.

Mercy was a great professor. Honestly, some of her lectures were a little rough around the edges, and we were a bit crunched for time towards the end of the course, but she's easy to find outside of class and very understanding. Quizzes are very similar to worksheets and practice problems. Study the book and your notes a ton and you'll do fine :)

Loved Professor Anyika! She followed the book well so it wasn't the end of the world if you missed class. Also, she was always available for questions. This was her first class teaching at UCSB, so she had a bit of a hard time adjusting to the quarter system and ended up crunched for time at the end, but I think she's getting a feel for it.
