She is so silly. I laughed out loud multiple times from her jokes. Not her fault the class and subject is hard, she teaches well and lays out her expectations clearly. If you do the textbook problems and her worksheets the tests are very fair. I took the entire 109 o-chem series with her and would do it again.
I love Professor Anyika so so much! She is extremely caring and puts in a lot of effort into her class and into helping her students understand. Office hours is a very helpful tool where you can solve problems with students and Mercy will guide you along the way. This way you really learn the material instead of her just giving you the answer!
She is a good professor overall for CHEM109A. I do think she could improve on spacing out the content better (ex. some lectures were too dense and fast and others were repetitive), and those random grade emails before quiz scores came out were unpleasant. My favorite part of taking her class was her humor. She is such a mooooooooooooooood.
Anyika is fairly new and seemed to had a rough start the previous times she taught, but I found her lectures to be very clear and fairly easy to understand. There was plenty of resources for practice outside class and the exams were fair, although she does like to sprinkle some trick questions here and there.
I honestly don't understand all of the hate towards Anyika. She is a decent lecturer and does the best she can considering how difficult of a topic organic chemistry is to grasp. You need to put in work outside of the class if you want a good grade. Her tests are very reasonable, most of the questions are taken from the book or lecture.
Love her. Ochem is hard, there's no way around that, but Dr. Anyika clearly cares a lot and tries her best to deliver the material smoothly. Do the book problems, go to class, and get help if you need it. Dr. Anyika is bubbly, passionate, and helpful.
Anyika makes her expectations very clear for the tests and gives you the materials you need to succeed. I don't really understand the poor reviews. It's a tough class that requires effort outside of lecture. Not much she can cover in 50 minute class periods. Stay on top of practice problems and attend CLAS. Her tests are VERY fair imo.
O-chem is hard so there is not much a professor can do. I think she is getting better with every quarter at UCSB. Just do the book problems, worksheets, mastering chemistry, and go to her office hours for questions. Yes the class is hard but it's also doable if you try.
This was a very tough class and I probably spent 4 hours a day studying the material. But if you put in the work (read before class/do all practice problems) the class is very doable. I think Prof Anyika gets a bad rep sometimes just because the material is hard, but i actually found her lectures very helpful after doing the reading.
Very bad. She gives you 100+ problems that you should know that could appear on the test. She makes the content so much more confusing. Quizzes are very unclear. Do not take her whatever you do.
Do not take Anyika. Bad professor, bad tests, bad grading, just bad. I don't learn anything from her lectures and she paces them horribly. I had to read the entire textbook and watch videos on every topic if I wanted a chance at passing her tests. I could not stand this class and I am happy to never have to take Anyika again.
The most soul crushing, humbling experience in my life. There are three midterms, all with uneven point distributions, for 60% of your final grade. I reviewed every practice problem and example question we had ever done in class, but no matter what my grade just dropped due to meticulous trick questions on these tests. good luck.
I had her for Chem1C and had the most negative experience but took her again for ochem because people told me she's better at that. she is slightly better at ochem, but that only goes so far. her attitude and teachings are cold and her office hours are pointless. she doesn't care to explain one-on-one and is just not a good quality teacher.
I am currently taking professor anyika for chem 1C and she is great. She is funny yet strict, with an emphasis on book problems, iclicker, exam practices, and quiz practices. If you do the problems for these four categories there is no reason not to do well in her class, they copy practically for the exam. She does not try to trick you! I love her!
I loved Mercy so much and I am taking her again for 109B!! She is the sweetest professor and actually cares about her students and wants them to like what we are learning. She does not try to trick you and is very clear about the quizzes and is so open to taking extra time to answer questions! She is so funny too!! Love my girl mercy <3
She is the sweetest lady! Like the others said, she was adjusting to the quarter system and had to rush towards the end of the quarter, but overall was really good. The most notable aspect of her class is that her tests and quizzes are FAIR! She never tries to trick you, but simply expects you to come knowing the material that she teaches.
Mercy was a great professor. Honestly, some of her lectures were a little rough around the edges, and we were a bit crunched for time towards the end of the course, but she's easy to find outside of class and very understanding. Quizzes are very similar to worksheets and practice problems. Study the book and your notes a ton and you'll do fine :)
Loved Professor Anyika! She followed the book well so it wasn't the end of the world if you missed class. Also, she was always available for questions. This was her first class teaching at UCSB, so she had a bit of a hard time adjusting to the quarter system and ended up crunched for time at the end, but I think she's getting a feel for it.
Somewhat enjoyed lectures because she's funny and sweet, however the way she broke down topics didn't click for me as I didn't take chem in high school. Very straightforward on expectations and preparing you for Chem 1A. However I didn't find asking for help very useful, when i didn't get a problem she only told me which concepts I need to review.
She was great for intro to chem. Does a good job at explaining chem and setting you up for 1A and how that class runs. She is good at helping you understand topics you need help with. very funny and sweet. def recommend if you know nothing or very little about chem.
Prof can come off harsh, but she is hilarious and genuinely wants her students to succeed. This class is definitely challenging if you don't have much experience in chem. You really need to attend every lecture and section, and go to office hours (can't stress that enough). Highly recommend textbook problems before every exam. Good prep for 1A!
She really does care for you and wants you to learn. There are 3 quizzes and 3 midterms plus the final, make sure to attend lectures (iclickers) and book problems and aleks. Course is honestly easy, just need to review consistently for the tests (and some self-teaching). She is very clear about her grading and expectations, and sets them high!
class was SO hard. i put in hours everyday to do good in this class including going to office hours and talking to my TA and i just couldn't get it. coming from someone who got a 103% in chem in high school it's very humbling to be in this class. the lectures were so fast and everything was just so difficult. 9 weeks is too short for chem. unreal.
I loved taking this intro chem class with her. Very dedicated to ensure we all understood what was expected of us in her course, how to get help, and what to expect in the courses after CHEM-25. Had a lot of personality that made lectures tolerable & she seemed to enjoy her job. Very manageable course if you put in the work. 10/10 experience.
