Changes are you won't agree with his politics, but he encourages you to disagree with him. Lectures are stimulating and engaging. Reading the books is mandatory for a good grade, and he does assign a bit of reading. The class is what you make of it. We were assigned three 4-page papers and no final. Definitely worth taking a class with.

One of the most influential teachers in my college career. Beautiful lecturer, passionate and captivating teacher. Cool ass cat.

Too much reading. Learned a lot from the lectures. Essays based on mostly lectures. Gives you the questions before the exams. Helpful when you need to reschedule your exam. Really tries to remember your name if you speak in class. Super nice and funny when he curses when class doesn't respond to his questions.

Absolutely one of the most intelligent people I have ever encountered. McCauley will learn your name if you give him the chance to. Knows everything about everything. Class is alright but requires a decent amount of dense reading, not much else.

Chris is, without a doubt, one of the best professors at UCSB. He knows the texts inside and ou. Class discussions are ALWAYS completley engaging and personal. He's not about advocacy, but about serious critical thinking. The readings are dense, but worth it because students learn so much. There is not one bad thing to say about him or class.

Chris is absolutely amazing. Lectures were so interesting. He knew my name after the first time and I talked to him, i saw him outside of class and he STILL knew my name. You have to keep with the reading somewhat because of the papers - but you learn a lot just from him talking. Brilliant man.

Not the hardest in the world but enough of a challenge to really push you into learning about the harsh, yet fulfilling, realities about the world around you. McAuley takes you on a journey throughout time and the world shedding light on almost every atrocity committed since the Cold War, never forgetting to ask the question: Why?

Professor McAuley's ability to motivate the class made class discussions interesting and intriguing. The reading material, for the most part, posed some great theories concerning U.S. involvement in foreign governments. I highly recommend not only the class, but the professor.

Best teacher I ever had. Great class too. You have to do the reading- 4 papers, but there is no midterm, no final and its really interesting.

chris was a great professor!! he remembered my name at the end of the quarter after only speaking one time! he makes it a point to get to know peoples names. he poses alot of questions to the class to think about and answer. theres alot of interaction between him and the class. i really liked this class. there were 3 pretty solid papers

The books are super expensive, but you really only need 3 of them for the papers he assigns. You really don't have to go to all the lectures, your section will cover pretty much everything you need to know. Pretty easy class if you don't mind having to write the essays. Avoid Jordan Camp as a TA, he's really boring and unimagenative.

A pretty laid back and nice guy, he was interested in learning everybody's name and wants everyone to call him Chris. He does go out of his way to talk to others outside of class and is pretty funny There's no midterms or finals just three papers.

You are required to read 6 books but in reality you only need to read 3. Three short papers throughout the year, probably easy depending a lot on your TA. No midterm, no final, lectures are reasonably intersting. Prof McAuley is friendly and makes an effort to listen to everyone and learn everyone's name.

McAuley is just a flat out nice guy, tries to get to know peoples names when you speak up in class, more of a disscussion atmosphere then a lecture. There was a lot of reading but if you skim over it and at least have a thing or two to say about it you will do fine. Only professor I've had whose taken the time to come up and say hi outside of class

only 3 papers - no tests at all. and yeah, you never have to go to class, but why not? he's a likeable guy and interesting to listen to especially when he slips into his different accents

a lot a lot of reading. no point to come to class (considering there is no midterm and final) except for stupid pop quizzes that he came up with everyonce in a while. i died on those considering keeping up with the reading (of which there were 7 books) was extremely difficult and sometimes his lectures were hard to follow. but they're only worth 1

He's great. Really educated and passionate about the subject he's teaching. His class was very interactive. Three 5 page papers. no midterm or final. The class is about slavery and globalization. I really like everything about this class.

The best professor I've ever had. Easy, helpful, unbelievably intelligent, laidback, funny. Amazing. I couldn't recommend him any higher. I took his class five years ago and still talk to my old roommate about how awesome McAuley was. Rock on.

I took the honors section for this course. Chris (and he insists you call him by his first name) is a great teacher and mentor. Only bad thing: made me read so much that I thought my eyeballs were going to explode.

Chris is one of the most passionate professors I've ever met. He's the only professor I've ever seen walk out of class when they weren't prepared. Chris is not an easy professor, but he really opened up a whole new perspective on issues whether I agreed with him or not. Chris is awesome.

An amazing professor, and for the most part very interesting lectures. Only 3 papers and weekly quizzes, but the papers are graded mostly on grammer and not on content, so take them to CLAS first. Overall, a really insightful and interesting class.

His class was pretty boring, but easy. There's no exams, only 3 papers. I think Bywater was a pretty decent TA. She grades pretty easy.
