very chill class. attendence is not mandatory, but part of our grade is in-class group work (not that bad) assigned on random days. grade book was weekly online quizzes that were very easy, in-class assignments, one book report, and a final project that could be done in a group where you create a social movement proposal. she makes it very doable.
This class is very textbook heavy, but it costs 14$ and you can get a lot of the content from scanning for names, sociological terms, and using the bolder words. You do need to study but it is 1 paper, section, midterm, and final. Biggest problem is she is not clear on what the tests focus on and it can be anything from the textbook or lecture.
two required textbooks and weekly reading quizzes. a book review for midterm and final group project instead of final exam. this is my third class with tara tober and she's an amazing professor. interesting class too, so i would highly recommend.
Tara Tober is a GOAT. Her lectures feel like professional Ted Talks and are very interesting. You don't need to go to lecture and she posts slides. There is ~50 pages a week of reading, but it was easy to read. You can get away with not reading, and the quizzes are online. One writing assignment that was very short and you could choose any topic.
I really enjoyed intro to soc, as a sociology major, but I would definitely recommend it to anyone as an easy GE. There was 1 midterm, 1 final, 1 relatively easy project, and weekly reading quizzes (online.) The weekly readings were pretty interesting but not necessary to pass. Tober makes lectures very engaging!
I really enjoyed intro to soc, as a sociology major, but I would highly recommend it as an easy GE. She's really cool
Lectures were pretty interesting, and Tober is a very engaging lecturer. Weekly homework quizzes were based off of a reasonable amount of textbook reading, but this weekly work can all be done within an hour. Graded by a midterm, final, project, and the HW quizzes, which are all easy given a little bit of effort. Overall, recommend for an easy GE.
I would HIGHLY suggest taking Tober for soc 1 if you have the chance! The only reason I received the grade I got i because I didn't study as hard as I could have. Amazing TA's and an amazing class. She never fails to engage with her class and make them excited to learn about soc 1. Theres 1 midterm test and an essay paper then a final.
Great professor. The lectures were organized and interesting. Midterm and Final were multiple choice and matching answers was fairly easy. Timed quizzes every week based on the readings and if you skimmed the readings it wasn't hard, some were super easy. There was one really confusing and hard assignment but even failing that I still passed.
i loved professor tober. she was an engaging speaker and i enjoyed lecture. the quizzes weren't hard because they were basically open note and the midterm/final was easy if you just studied. she gives a lot of resources for you to prepare for exams. i'd definitely recommend taking her class
take this class!! super interesting lectures but the concepts were fairly easy so not hard to study for. I felt like this class was graded very fairly. I missed half the lectures and still got an A. I would recommend doing the readings each week. she made me have an interest in sociology, plus my TA was awesome!
Tober is probably the best Sociology professor at UCSB in myopinion. She explains the theories and concepts of the course very well. Her canvas is easy to understand. There's 2 papers, a mandatory midterm, and one final project/paper. TA grades everything except midterm and final. Just take the course you won't regret it.
super easy class as long as you do the reading and put in some effort should be an easy A. attendance isn't mandatory so i would skip lecture to study for my other classes and still ended with an A. section attendance is mandatory and the class has two exams and one essay along with weekly reading quizzes.
Easy class and all her lectures are uploaded. We had weekly NYT Kahoots, 1 essay, 1 book review, and for the final it's dealers choice. For the midterm, she gives a study guide with all possible questions that could be on the exam. Mandatory attendance for 8 am.
Honestly this class is not hard at all. There were weekly chapter readings, with a text book that costs one dollar per chapter (super cheap), and one weekly reading quiz. Attendance is not mandatory, but section might be. Also no study guide, but make sure to take notes while reading and learn the vocab. and you will be good. She is super sweet.
i liked this class. prof tober is always very accomodating and willing to help. weekly NYT kahoots are fun and refreshing, and you can choose what your final will be. grade consists of only a couple things but she gives us a study guide for the midterm so its easy to prepare. mandatory attendance for an 8 am was brutal though.
If you want an easy A this is the perfect professor for you. Personally I don't think I learned anything new, or anything at all. She talks all the time about her kids and teaches stuff that are common sense. You won't learn anything from her. If you are a lazy student, go for it. 0/10 you are paying for your own education so make it worth it.
Loved Tara so much. Was never much of a history gal, but hearing her lecture about social theorists from the past and connecting their theories to today's society was really cool. Midterm was great, she gave all the questions beforehand to study and left plenty of class time to answer questions. One paper and then a short reflection for the final.
super nice and pretty easygoing in terms of grading. midterm and final were both online, and as long as you read the textbook it's easy to get a good grade
Professor Tober's lectures are basically based off the online textbook so if you need to skip lecture, you can easily catch up. There are weekly discussions, 2 midterms, a final, and a paper assignment. The midterm and final are both take home online open notes and you have unlimited time to finish them, so overall easy A
I loved having prof Tober for SOC 1. Extremely easy GE and attendance was not mandatory. Her lectures were quite interesting though, so I enjoyed attending class. She tied course concepts with present real world events. Online tests, super easy and multiple choice. I wish every class was like this lol.
Prof. Tober is super nice and understanding. This class was really easy and had a pretty low workload (one 500-word forum post a week). Tests and papers are graded very generously and lectures are always entertaining. This class was a theory course, which is always kind of tedious, but she made it interesting with personal stories and jokes.
Professor Tober was really amazing and gave great lectures. She often used real-life examples or told us personal stories connecting to the topics we were studying, which made it much more enjoyable. Definitely one of my favorite professors here at UCSB! The work load was pretty average, as long as you stay on top of things, you will do well.
