Good teaching? Yes. She knows how to teach writing for sure. Genuinely caring her students? Probably no. Make full use of her office hours and your tuition. A contrast in grading between her and another male lecturer Ingrid: several 70s, 80s on essay Another lecturer (I took his ling12): lowest to highest: 52-60 out of 60
Mrs. Bowman is an amazing instructor, she is very nice and helpful. She was always glad to help all of her students and happy to receive any suggestions about lectures. But I have to say, she is a tough grader. Anyway, her lectures were helpful and I like her.
She is a really good person! Caring, respond quick, give detailed feedback on everything. The class is not easy, two timed essay. But if you pay attention to everything in class, participate in seminar, and read all the reading (load is okay), you gonna be okay.
A tough grader. And the many Fishbows were exhausting.
Yes, yes, she is a tough grader; it took me a lot of time (twice as much as a major class) to get an A in that class, but I learned a lot in her class, which made me preform well in the following writing classes. You'll receive detailed feedback and get help from her, work hard! I strongly recommend taking her class in a quarter w/out lots of class
Very Nice professor, make sure you follow the rubric, she is very approachable.
I really like professor Bowman, she is very caring and respected.
She will give you Rubrics for each paper, go to her office hours and CLAS, and you will be fine
Bowman really cares about her students, she is very nice and gave you a lot of feedbacks on your writing. I think She is the best professor in UCSB. You just need to put in the work and you will get an A
she is great, but too mean on grading
Write too much with less help. Class is hard.
Very tough grader. Write too much with less help.
A very warm & welcoming professor who responded to emails quickly and was always there to help. I took LING10 Academic Reading & the course work seemed a little heavier than others, but doable. She's a tough grader, but as long as you're improving & participating especially, she's very nice. Her directions with work did seem unclear at times.
It is such an excellent class!! Professor Bowman is a great human being and an excellent instructor!! She created a comfortable and intimate class atmosphere for all of us to share our thoughts. Best Linguistics professor I have ever met so far!!
She was just bad and unclear on many quizzes questions and do not give any valuable lectures. All you can do is to read a general simple grammar book and figure everything out by yourself. Do not recommend.
Tough grader, but if you really care about her materials, take them seriously, go to her office hours getting advice for your paper when you got stuck, you can learn a lot in terms of the flow of writing. She does have in-class writing which takes up a decent proportion of the whole grade, but if you have good grammar, getting an A is achievable.
she is nice but too mean on grading
Her class is useless in terms of improving your writing. Tough grader. Dont waste your time.
I never do rate my professor before because I don't want to comment on a teacher subjectively. And I didn't follow my friends' suggestion of avoiding her either. It turns out terrible grades and lots of papers. She has 2 papers and each of them has 3 drafts, including lots of in-class writing.
Nice teacher, but really tough grader. Also, too much in-class writing and hw.
