Professor Anyika is a great, funny person, but not a great lecturer. I felt really confused when I went to class and understood things better if I just taught them to myself. She tries to make things easy but it doesn't end up that way :/
Although chemistry at UCSB is notoriously difficult, Professor Anyika and her TAs do their very best to help students improve, especially outside of class time. Students that put in the effort will see it reciprocated by them. The professor is very lighthearted and funny.
difficult only because its ochem, but I loved her. Her lectures are highly organized and structured. if you do textbook problems, you will be golden for exams (they are very similar, if not identical). Don't be fooled by my A, I worked my ass off for it, but its not unrealistic, I got a 62 on the first exam and was still able to pull it off
I don't understand the hate. Anyika is easily my favorite professor at ucsb. She cares a lot about her students understandings and has taught me study habits that I will use forever. She will scare you into studying harder which ended up making me enjoy ochem way more.
Class with her was one of the most difficult and discouraging experiences I've had. Class averages were consistently low, which made it clear that this was not an isolated issue, but a systemic problem with how the course was structured.Exams were unnecessarily hard with no partial credit, making it nearly impossible to do well despite preparation.
obviously ochem is hard, but mercy didnt even try to make it any easier. if you really REALLY put in the effort an A is possible, but just try to take it with someone else if you can. that aside, i actually didnt hate her teaching and her tests werent unfair, just difficult
Personally I found her to be a very difficult professor. Her lectures were very bare and she expects to teach yourself all of the content and use lecture as review. She's also very discouraging in office hours and in lectures. I would need more than two hands in order to count the amount of times she told us we were going to fail the tests.
Anyika is a quite poor professor and I am tired of acting like she isn't. Her lectures do no better at teaching than the textbook itself, her test averages are consistently significantly lower than other OChem averages, and she fails to prepare students WHATSOEVER for her exams. do well on the first two because the third quiz and final are awful.
This has to be one of the hardest class I have ever taken here at UCSB. The content was already hard and messy but Anyika made it harder by hiding crazy tricks in her tests and I dislike how points were either all or nothing. The final was destructive to say the least but the curve she gave was very generous at the end of the day.
Anyika's tests are very hard and can be demotivating at times, which is the only con I can really make. But this is intrinsic to any O Chem course. However her lectures are very concise and well taught. Almost everything important is covered in lecture, but I recommend reading the textbook for review. Always do the textbook problems and DON'T CRAM.
Dr. Anyika is not easily reachable outside of class. I have been ghosted by her on numerous occasions. We were told we were going to fail the class every other lecture due to a low average on the first midterm. Even after attending office hours every single week this quarter, I do not believe I can succeed in this course.
I have never put as much effort into anything as much as this class, yet the work goes by unrecognized. The midterms were really difficult, but fair and you will do well if you put the work in. BUT be prepared to basically teach yourself the entire course by reading the textbook. Final was HORRIBLE and super unfair, it was stuff we had never seen
i went to her office hours a few times. her jokes were funny but the way she answered questions was unhelpful and discouraging. she moved super fast through lectures. the breaking point was honestly her teaching a whole new unit 6 days before the final (mostly through video lectures).
This class was the hardest I have ever worked for. Studying 6 hours a day still gets you nowhere. She is condescending when you ask questions, and when she does reply, its usually one word answers. There are things on the exams that were never taught in lecture, and then she is surprised when the entire class average on the exams is 50-60%.
I took her 109A, professor Mercy was really nice, the exams were quite straight forward. Most of her exam questions were from textbook. I don't know how's her other ochem classes, I've finished the ochem series with another professor, but my friends are taking her 109B, they always ask me questions and make me suffer from 109B again.
The only class I got a C in. She truly made it that way. Never had a professor I didn't like so much because of how unfair her grading/tests/quizzes were and how much she didn't care about her students.
She is so silly. I laughed out loud multiple times from her jokes. Not her fault the class and subject is hard, she teaches well and lays out her expectations clearly. If you do the textbook problems and her worksheets the tests are very fair. I took the entire 109 o-chem series with her and would do it again.
This course is really difficult, but Professor Anyika does what she can. She'll teach you everything you need to know for tests, but sometimes there's exceptions and purposefully difficult questions in there to get you. Class averages for this course are low, but there should be a curve.
I LOVE Anyika. She's sassy, but you can tell she cares about you if you so long you put effort into learning the material. She tests you on things that make you really think cause it's not just practice problems from the textbook. She's totally a fair tester. ATTEND OFFICE HOURS they help so much.
I love Professor Anyika so so much! She is extremely caring and puts in a lot of effort into her class and into helping her students understand. Office hours is a very helpful tool where you can solve problems with students and Mercy will guide you along the way. This way you really learn the material instead of her just giving you the answer!
Professor Anyika has been my favorite professor. She is extremely caring and will help her students understand the material. She will sit with you one on one until you understand if you ask her. Ochem is a hard class but if you go to office hours, understand the practice problems, and go to office hours you should be fine. Definitely recommend!!
She is a good professor overall for CHEM109A. I do think she could improve on spacing out the content better (ex. some lectures were too dense and fast and others were repetitive), and those random grade emails before quiz scores came out were unpleasant. My favorite part of taking her class was her humor. She is such a mooooooooooooooood.
Anyika is fairly new and seemed to had a rough start the previous times she taught, but I found her lectures to be very clear and fairly easy to understand. There was plenty of resources for practice outside class and the exams were fair, although she does like to sprinkle some trick questions here and there.
I honestly don't understand all of the hate towards Anyika. She is a decent lecturer and does the best she can considering how difficult of a topic organic chemistry is to grasp. You need to put in work outside of the class if you want a good grade. Her tests are very reasonable, most of the questions are taken from the book or lecture.
