Nice professor, good at teaching. If you put time into his class you will get a good grade.
Tests are hard, complex, and not reflective of what is taught in lecture. Lectures are kind of dry, but if you study hard enough, you'll get an okay grade. He doesn't give out many A's.
Joseph is a good lecturer. His tests are fairly easy as far among freshman chemistry professors. It still requires a good deal of work, though.
He is very clear. All lectures are powerpoint and posted online. I clicker is important.
Joseph's a no nonsense type of guy when it comes to Chem: he'll drill you, but he won't coach you. He leaves it up to you to reach out and participate (iClickers don't vary by correct answer, extra credit forum). Tests are multiple choice but very tricky: read the questions several times. Very unpretentious lecturer and has a good sense of humor.
Joseph is a good professor. His lectures are concise and only presents what you need to know. Even know he states that book problems are essential, I found that his quizzes and exams rarely includes book problems, compared to my Chem 1A prof., Price. The questions that I've experienced on quizzes and exams lean more towards the conceptual side.
This is my second quarter with Joseph, his lectures are very straight forward. Have his slides written before going into lecture, so you can actually listen to what he's saying . Practice book problems, and go over your midterms and quizzes because for the final he likes to put the same question just different numbers.
Clear, concise, with a bit of wit. Great lecturer. Second quarter with him now, and signed up for a 3rd. I would say tests are fair (multiple choice) but not super easy. Made ALEKS optional, iClicker is optional but can replace quizzes. Kinda sarcastic in office hours though. Overall would definitely pick him over the others.
Joseph is slightly humorous and his lectures are concise. He posts the slides on Gauchospace and you don't need iClicker points to get an A (they do help though). His practice tests and quizzes are extremely helpful, try them and UNDERSTAND them!! Get practice finals from other teachers, he doesn't provide those. Do ALEKS. It's optional but do it!!
Great Professor, very clear and direct about all the material. Easy to understand, overall great gen chem professor!
Professor Joseph is awesome! He's very clear with what he expects for his midterms and quizzes. Final was challenging, but study past exams and quizzes and you'll be fine.
Great Professor! If you can take him do so. He's the best chem Professor at UCSB in my opinion. Tests and quizzes are straight forward; however, the final was a little harder but not that bad.
Joseph is such a approachable guy, and he has a great sense of humor. His tests are very straightforward, but his finals was a little more difficult. He's such a great professor and an overall great guy.
Professor Joseph was a pretty easy professor. Midterms/quizzes were straightforward. Final was a bit more difficult than the rest of his tests but was not impossible. Extremely recommend taking Joseph for General Chemistry, clear and not too challenging of a teacher.
Great professor, makes sure you understand the concepts. Very good at lecturing, and also his midterms/quizzes are not too hard, but study for the final.
Great professor!! I did not understand chem at all before taking his class. He makes chem easier to understand and his test are very straightforward. As long as you pay attention in lecture the class is relatively easy :)
JoJo is such a great professor! The class was super interesting and it was never boring! The only downside is that the averages on his two midterms and final were both fairly low around 70% so the curve is hard to beat if you're in the middle like me. Very nice guy.
I love Dr. Joseph! He is approachable and has a funny, sarcastic sense of humor. He is very clear when he lectures and always stops if people have questions. He genuinely wants his students to learn the material. His quizzes are straightforward and relatively easy, and the exams are very conceptually based. All around great guy and professor
I already knew all the class content from previous experience, but Dr. Joseph's lectures were nonetheless very good review and very thorough, and he's funny too :) When the class got lower than expected scores on a midterm, Dr. Joseph greeted the class with compassion and hefty extra-credit assignments for all. Final was challenging, but not crazy.
Dr. Joseph was great. Everything in lecture was explained very clearly, and his office hours were really helpful for clarifying material. Do all the book problems (very important for success in the class), practice tests (timed!), and textbook readings and you should be fine. Midterms are a time crunch but the final wasn't which was nice.
Genuinely such a cool professor. Chem will always be hard but Joseph tried his best to teach everyone. If you need help, he is always available. I loved his chem 1A calendar to get things done, super helpful! The practice exams were kinda like the actual exams but please look into the concept and take your time to learn it because you can get lost.
Joseph is an engaging professor, and you can tell he really wants us to learn. Chem itself is hard, but Joseph did his best to make it less stressful. He puts a lot of book problems in the exams so make sure to study those. Aleks wasn't really that helpful, but it's good practice for general concepts. Also, don't rely on the curve too much
Gives somewhat helpful lectures, also have posted them on YouTube (covers the basics). Tries to help in OH so highly recommend. Shares past exams, which were really useful and somewhat similar to actual ones. Curved the final grade to help students pass. best chem prof by far.
Joseph does a good job at teaching concepts. Chemistry is a hard topic regardless of professor but as long as you do book problems and the practice tests the class is manageable. A lot of material is thrown at you during lectures which can be overwhelming.
