Great lecturer, interesting material, overall funny, engaging, and really good at explaining the more difficult concepts. Even brought in cookies his wife made during our midterm. Great guy and amazing professor!
very hard to hear him, sit in the front if u actually care. the class is pretty unorganized so it's kinda difficult to take notes. the labs are really easy though
Lectures were not mandatory and were confusing. Could never hear him. Sections were mandatory and important for grades.
Very nice guy but Dinosaurs is not an easy GE and is extremely heavy on the midterm and final. You will receive a bad grade if you do bad on the tests, doesn't matter if you turned in all the labs and got 100%. Questions on the final were not very well covered in sections, have to really pay attention in lecture.
Prof is nice and caring, labs were easy and fun (cool fossils). But very lecture heavy. Midterm was ok with cheat sheet and he curves but the final was a whole other beast. Very hard even with a cheat sheet. Def. a harder GE but sometimes fun. He has a really soft voice so don't sit in the back and def memorize cladograms, no mandatory attendance.
The final was way harder than the midterms, but the rest of the class was pretty easy in my opinion. We got a cheatsheet on all tests + labs are easy. He's a chill guy and passionate about the subject, but beware he has a pretty monotone and quiet voice so lectures will be boring. Sit in the front if you can and study the cladogram!
Cheat sheet allowed for midterm and final. Tests aren't too difficult as long as you put your cladograms on your cheat sheet and are familiar with evolutionary novelties. First few weeks are mostly about rocks, takes a bit to get to dinosaurs. Enjoyed this class and now I know a lot of stuff about dinosaurs and birds.
15% quiz 25% lab 60% exams, Prof's volume is super light and the curve for midterm medium is 50%. Making more than needed hardship for a entry level GE.
So, he does a good job as a professor when it comes to teaching, chill caring guy. Now, the work, just no. The labs are easy, the lowest score I've gotten was a 45/50. But the midterm and final where very hard, even with the cheatsheets most of the class didn't get a good score. Overall, he is a good guy don't get me wrong, test are tough though.
Overall this was a hard GE. Your midterm and final basically make up your grade and even then the recommended topics of review you put on your cheat sheet aren't even on the test. Labs are fairly difficult and a hard to understand. If you're not passionate about specific dinosaurs and fossils I don't recommend taking this class as it is difficult.
If you're planning on taking this class as a fun GE and are thinking to yourself "omg a dinosaur class sounds so fun", think again. This class is super boring, it made me never want to think about a fossil ever again. The lecture slides are not organized or helpful, and he is kind of hard to hear during lecture. He is a nice guy though!
Great guy, cares about what he teaches. With that aside, this class was so unbelievably taxing and difficult it was almost impossible to balance with my major classes. 100s upon 100s of lecture slides, labs graded harshly, and 2 double sided microscopic cheat sheets on the midterm and the final—to barely scrape by. Find another option for a gen ed.
Not an easy GE at all. I put a lot of studying into this class but he has made it impossible to get an A.
Test so hard my sweat and tears turned solid
Not an "easy ge" attendance isn't mandatory, but if u wanna do well attend. He speaks in a very low tone, so if you want to hear him, sit in the first couple of rows . The labs are pretty easy, but your grade is really dependent on the final and midterm, which are very hard and require a lot of memorization.
He is an ok professor, just has the lowest tone voice ever. If you aren't in the first rows, it'll be hard to hear. The lectures are so boring. The Midterm was the most unfair thing I have ever taken. Overall, the professor himself is ok, but PLEASE JUST TAKE ANOTHER CLASS!!! It is not easy. I went from an A to a C because of this. It is not fun...
Lectures done in IV theater, impossible to hear if you are not in the first few rows. The lecture is slide heavy, which half of the time do not make sense since it is mostly pictures. He can go on rambles for half the class time, without ever getting to the main point. The Sections is what really saves you at times since labs are graded. Passionate
One of the nicest professors I have ever met. He is clearly passionate about the subject he teaches and wants to help his students learn and succeed.
He is soft spoken so you have to sit in the front row if you want to understand his lectures. He is not very approachable and sometimes even rude giving backhanded compliments on some of his feedback. Fortunately the content was interesting, so I still enjoyed the class. You should get an ok grade as long as you follow the directions.
Average score on midterm was an F. Even with a curve still ended the class with a B. Unless the midterm and final are online, I would not recommend this course as an easy GE. Even though he took over the class during the TA strike, I could barely hear him speaking during lecture all quarter.
Maybe it was just the IV theatre, but it was IMPOSSIBLE to hear Wyss lecture without having to sit in the first 3 rows and break your neck! only one midterm that was very hard and not fair, and the final was along the same guidelines. The strike also killed this class for me.
GO TO THE LECTURES. Yes, they are posted online, but being there in person will help. The topic is very memorization heavy. I'd say only pick this class if you're actually interested in the topic, not as an "easy GE". Wyss wants his students to succeed, but if you don't put in any work to succeed, you won't succeed. Simple as that.
Professor Wyss was the one teacher during the strike that went above and beyond to make sure his students were prepared for finals. He took over all labs and exam review sessions normally done by TAs. He was such a caring and thoughtful professor and would definitely recommend the course as it was extremely interesting. 10/10 for Andy.
super chill professor. HE sounds so mf passionate about dinosaurs but its wayyyyyy too much for an average kid trying to get credit for a GE class. voice is too monotone so I fall asleep in class but he loves his class. I thought it would be the easiest A ever but its tough
