Incredibly knowledgeable, has a sense of humor. And, yeah, love that laugh...
Actually interesting for a survey course!
His lectures ramble on forever and are loaded with totally obvious points. Not much original thinking. What's with the turtlenecks? Is he Seinfeld's long lost brother?
I love this teacher. He made a survey course fun. Great laugh and you are gauranteed to laugh in his class. A little unorganized and absent minded but great guy all around.
extremely knowledgeable about the material and subject. has a high pitched girlie laugh and is into walt whitman because of his gay tendencies and obvious sensual topics in his poetry. large load of work and readings but overall an amazing teacher.
Really great professor. Extremely funny and entertaining. The class is easy if you do the readings and go.
cool teacher, has a funky laugh. Really likes Walt Whitman. cool enough that i would take a senior seminar with him. i recommend him.
Maslan is a really nice guy and good prof. Your final grade is based on a bunch of forums which are each worth 10-20%. If you do well on the first few, he'll keep giving you good grades. The reading is the hardest part of the class because he expects you to have read the whole book before the first class on it and it's easy to fall behind.
ENGL132WD; We were consistently one week behind schedule. The material covered was incredibly engaging, but because of the limited time and disorganization, much of the assigned readings would go undiscussed, and assignments would frequently be omitted as a result. Professor is brilliant and hilarious, but unorganized.
He's a cool guy once you get to know him. on his good side you'll feel comfortable around him with assignments, do good and get good grades. it will be fun and most importantly he has a genuine sense of humor.
Dry. I had trouble concentrating in his lectures because they were dull. His midterm and final were somewhat difficult. (Midterm featured a small, random section of questions.) The class is doable, but make sure you have your TA go over the two essays you have to write.
once you know how he runs his class it's easy to do well. for the midterm, I stressed about reading all of the novels and not as much on the ppts because I'd barely taken any notes on them. Afterwards, I learned that you dont even necessarily need to read all of the books, just take good notes in class on the specific themes he puts on the ppts.
this guy as a trainwreck and laughs because he knowingly assigns offensive texts to read and wants to know if you were offended by it. his powerpoints are also basically the midterm/final but he often goes off topic from what's on the powerpoint because "oh, this passage i want to talk about isnt on the slides" as if he hadn't made the ppt
You can sit back and listen with him, but also expect to make contributions. He sets interesting and varied assignments, and you can tell he's passionate. Funny, endearing, and incredibly smart. I would definitely take a class by him again.
I'm confused by some people's comments. I never took notes in class (well, not never, but not religiously) and I did very well. All you need to do is actually ENGAGE with the material and listen to his lectures and you'll learn things you never knew before. He was interesting, informative and helpful. Don't take the class if you're lazy, though.
He's a great lecturer. If you're a good student, you will do well.
He was really funny and ridiculously intelligent. The first couple lectures were really hard, but he always makes interesting points. I was in his honors section and he was really engaging with us. I really enjoyed his ridiculous laugh and the fact that he laughs at his own jokes. Take his honors section if you get the chance.
This guy is something else. He shows up late to lectures, has a big ego, and is highly amused by his own jokes. When he starts lecturing though, you start to see that he is highly intelligent and really knows his S#^! He can be very funny but also very condescending to students. God help you if you become one of his "victims" !!!!!
This guy is Bob Sagets twin brother, but not as funny. Go to lecture, take notes and the class is simple. Avoid being the person who responds to his "jokes", he will bury you.
Maslan is a super funny and engaging professor. The material is a bit dense, but he helps you though it in his organized lectures. He's busy, so don't expect a lot of help outside of class, but if you catch him just afterwards, it helps a lot. Take good notes and insert them somehow into your papers and you'll get an A.
I honestly thought i was going to hate this class. He scared two thirds of people away on the first day. I actually ended up learning a lot about essay composition, literary theory, philosophy, and he acknowledges when material is difficult or seemingly pointless. Nice guy and very personable, take his classes he's underrated!
He kind of grew on me as the quarter went on, but this was still one of the more painful classes I've taken. His "discussion" questions invite only one correct response and overall, it's just incredibly boring as he thumbs through his notes to make irrelevant points. Find a way to get on his good side and he'll give you an A.
He never has time for you outside of class. He hardly answers your email or appointment requests. The reading was easy but his grading was extremely harsh, that was the overall opinion in the class. Don't ever take his class unless you absolutely have to. Of all the english classes, this was the worst.
Don't do it. Takes Role everyday, very boring unorganized lecture, asks stupid questions to the class sparking boring discussions. Ive looked at the clock more in this class than the professor
