reminds me of that one guy from young sheldon. tests were fair and lectures were interesting. just put in the effort and youll be fine. would take again
mumbles when he lectures and goes through his slides super fast. only graded on two midterms and a final - easily the hardest class i've ever taken i don't recommend. when he tells you its a very hard class he isn't exaggerating.
Prefaces the class by saying that it is going to be difficult, and that was an honest statement. Immunology as a whole is a tough and dense subject but the slides and lectures prepare you to do well on the exams. He is clear on expectations, and overall his exams were reasonable if you did the readings and studied well.
good and nice man! Really interesting class, the material was great. But he rambles a lot, goes off on tangents mixes really confusing stories into his lectures. Not good articulation. tests are HARD, make sure to memorize EVERYTHING WELL, and applying that info for every topic. Imagine a hard take home test w/o notes. curved 1st mid 52 2nd mid 48
Rothman was okay. You could tell that he was not super confident about the material he taught and often muttered things to make up for that. The content is not too hard however the tests are much harder than they should be and have a lot of trick questions. Exams are not a good test of your knowledge. Only the tests are included in the gradebook.
Good enough lecturer, and definitely a super nice guy who wants his students to succeed. Exams were relatively difficult, but not unreasonable.
Smith was a decent lecturer, but tended to fall behind, which made everything a little harder. The exam we had for his section (first 5 weeks) had questions that were pretty unfair compared to what we had been taught. Also, I reached out to him for help with a quiz, but he brushed my request aside, leaving me confused. He's a very nice guy though.
He was engaging, recorded lectures, and was willing to answer questions. In 133H he asked questions to guide us to understand the material. The topic itself is hard, it is immunobiology. To learn about the immune system you need to understand how everything links and how to analyze data. Fair midterms, you HAVE to study. Hard subject = hard class.
Absolutely the worst upper div bio class l've taken. Expect to spend 5-7+ hours outside of the lectures, review sesh, & section every week to do well. Syllabus guidelines flew out the window at the end (what happened to grading transparency?) and some people were curved over a whole letter grade while others weren't. Focus on the final ig.
the class is so dense and fast there's a slide for every minute of the class. two of the lecture videos didn't get uploaded and all he said was that it didn't upload, not that he would re-record them. For someone who said that the class material was very heavy at the beginning of the quarter, he sure seems like he doesn't want us to succeed.
you can tell that professor de tomaso knows his stuff but he is incredibly out of touch with how much students know. his lectures are insanely dense and the slides are crafted poorly. also tells you to not memorize anything then goes and puts it on the test. tests are very long with packed questions that require multiple rereads just to understand.
Goes 5+ minutes over pretty much every lecture and rushes so fast through the last couple slides every class. Also always starts lecture late. Disorganized and incoherent lectures.
Has no regard for his students. Doesn't have the second midterm graded and its almost week 10. Always great to know what concepts you need to review like a week before the final.
God awful class
De Tomaso is fascinated with Immunology and spends most of the class trying to get students to grasp just how cool is it. However, the tests are extremely hard and usually have multipart research based questions that usually cover one of the main ideas. Make study guide "maps" for this class to figure out how all the topics are connected.
Avoid any class De Tomaso teaches like the plague. He is ridiculously out of touch with his student's knowledge and continuously bombards you with information, tells you that you don't need to know it, and then puts it on a midterm. No professor has dampened my love for science more. He kills all joy.
Definitely the worst upper division bio class I've taken here. This class has the potential to be so incredible but it is spoiled by the ridiculous speed that the material is presented at. 50+ slides for a 50 minute class. There is no time to absorb material or learn. I'm certain I won't retain a single ounce of info by the end of the quarter.
My favorite professor at UCSB! He made biochem (a notoriously difficult subject) so much easier to understand. His lectures were so engaging and honestly pretty entertaining. His lectures are the only lectures that I can attend in person and not fall asleep. Such a funny and personable guy. Anyone would be lucky to learn biochem from Rothman. GOAT
I liked Rothman a lot. It's not his fault the material has to be rushed since there's so much to cover and little class time. I thought his exams were fair and his expectations for them were pretty clear. He gives lots of practice problems and old exams to study. He makes the material digestible even though it's difficult w/ well-organized lectures
Great lecturer, however, the material was somewhat rushed in my opinion. Professor Rothman was gracious enough to add in extra credit and to give us a decent curve. Besides the ridiculously hard final, the midterms were doable if you study enough.
Rothman's class is pretty challenging. He focuses very heavily on lectures and doesn't make his expectations for what you need to know clear. His exams were toughs well with not much of a curve given. He is not horrible by any means, just not my favorite professor ever. I think he does truly care, I just couldn't seem to learn the material.
Joel is a good lecturer and he makes some good dad jokes. He's really helpful in OH and is a really nice person overall. The average was way lower than the top 8 students so he offered us extra credit which was really nice of him. The final was lowkey hard tho ngl. The midterm difficulty was understandable IMO.
I really enjoyed this class! Material was challenging, but Rothman is a great lecturer. He made a very difficult subject manageable and interesting, but you have to work for it. Problem sets and past exams are super helpful in determining what information is important. From there, I would study the hell out of his lectures and you'll be fine.
Professor Rothman is 100% my favorite professor that I have had at UCSB. He really takes careful consideration in the organization of his often difficult teaching concepts and puts immense effort into making them entertaining. He is also a really cool guy to talk to. Highly recommend taking this class!
