i liked the class only because i thought the content was interesting. he does not go by the book and his tests were not at all like the study guides and ridiculously random. can get pretty boring sometimes and you have to take a lab section, which is the easiest part, but a waste of time

Professor Valentine is very interested in the subject he teaches making it fairly easy to understand. However, the class is difficult to study for because the review barely touches on what is going to be on the tests. Labs are annoyingly irrelevant. I got an A in the class with one or two nights of studying. (Never opened the book)

He's a pretty good professor. keeps things relevant and ties in class material with current events. fun stuff if you like science.

Lecture notes are difficult to follow and he doesn't keep up with the book. However, if you read the book and have some science background it's all an easy class. He's funny and the honors section is worth taking.

He is an okay professor. Lectures are boring most of the time. Midterms and finals are hard if your a science person. Study guides he gives are useless. Funny at times..

Too easy. Unless science scares the daylights out of you, this is an easy, easy A class. Valentine offers some interesting stories and connections in lecture, but you can snooze when he drones about 8th grade level science. Then just scan the textbook sections. Tests are weighted towards specific, but simple, water chemistry problems.

uhhhh not a good teaccher....his lecture notes are sooo messy i hate taking notes in this class cause i can never understand what to take....power points are soo wordy and study guides do not help with tests at ALLL

He is a great professor and very approachable. Presents information in a clear and interesting way. I like when he uses current events to illustrate points and show relevance. Loved the class!...He's also super hot!

He is an okay guy but you have to take the honors section to appreciate the class. Take Geog 3A if you want an oceanography class you can use towards a major (geography). easy class if you have any science background.

Not a bad or disagreeable person, and his lectures aren't terrible, but midterms and labs and finals are very challenging. Plus the class is focused mainly on chemical aspects of oceanography and things like the carbon cycle -- I don't recommend it if science isn't one of your strengths. NOT an easy A class.

Valentine focused way too much on the chemical aspect of Oceanography which many of us students found extremely unappealing. He often forgets what he does and doesn't cover in lecture so there were often random test questions he never discussed in class. Lab was confusing and much too advanced and often had no connection with classroom discussion.

This is the worst class I've ever had. The lectures are set up to demonstrate a clear and concise version of the content but then you're left utterly bewildered for the midterm and final. Grading seems unfair and the tests are way too difficult for the amount of depth given to the teaching of the subjects. Labs are of no use. DON'T take this class

Do NOT take this class. While it may be easy for those students who enjoy geology, it is hell for the average student looking for an easy science class. The professor purposely looks for way to screw you over on midterms and finals. He is boring to the point of tears and makes you hate everything about the ocean. Only take if you are a major.

Pretty easy class..not to necessary to read if you go to the lectures..he has a funny dry sense of humor

This class is not as cool as I thought it would be, but that's not Valentines fault I guess. The lectures were pretty interesting, and he is good at explaining. The tests arent very hard, and I got a B+ without opening the book. Take this class for an easy science.

Ugh. The only saving grace in this class was the TA.

When he goes off on some boring tangent that has nothing to do with the class, rest assured it will be on the midterm.

Wait, this guy has an accent? If you think he's hard to understand i'd suggest relearning English. Easy class if you keep up with lectures and reading. Very easy math problems. One of the easier science courses. Helpful in office hours. Labs are trivial. A few tricky questions on midterm/final.

I thought David was a knowledgeable instructor. A lot of my classmates complained about his accent, but by coincidence, my adoptive mother is from Kazakhstan so I understood him perfectly. Lecture was fine and lab was OK, but a lot seemed like busy work. 1 on 1 during office hour he did come across as...eccentric.

Dr. Valentine is pleasant, his thick accent is hard to decipher tho' (raised in Uzbekistan). After second lecture, material becomes disjointed. Tendency toward off topic rants in class. I went to an office hour once and he actually said somthing about some "international conspiracy" which forced him to leave his last job in Yemen. Not kidding

The easiest class I have ever taken. Spent a total of one hour studying for both the final and midterm. If you can do basic algebra most math questions are a piece of cake. Test questions are pretty predictable, and you actually learn a lot.
