easiest class ever. i got an A+. going to class is a waster of time. he posts his lectures online so just study those. oh and the group project is the biggest joke. everyone got 100%
I really enjoyed his class, even though I'm not huge fan of geology. However, he did have a sense of dry humor that I found super entertaining during lecture.
Matt is very passionate about volcanoes/earthquakes which is super interesting. I loved this class. He kind of ran out of stuff to talk about and the last few lectures dragged on a bit. They're all online so you can skip sometimes. Very little homework (4 short assignments and 1 gets dropped) and the reading is not really necessary. Tests were ok.
Would take again. As a freshman, it was a great class for me to kind of get used to UCSB. His lectures do get kind of boring, but he is a funny guy. Didn't read at all. He always stayed after lecture if you wanted to go talk to him. Very approachable.
Awesome teacher, if you go to lecture and memorize the lecture slides right before the tests, you will get an A+, aka super easy. Don't need to read, but might need book for HW
Witty professor. Only tested on what is mentioned in lecture. Homework easy, minimal textbook use. Dropped the lowest homework grade. No final, just 2 midterms. Option to drop score on the 1st midterm and double the score on the second midterm.
easy class, and interesting material. Would take a class taught by him again
Matt Jackson has an awkward, ever-so-slightly cynical sense of humor which make his lectures fun. That is if you decide to show up. Much of the class deemed that unnecessary, but I happened to find his lectures very clear, concise, and helpful. Seldom did the reading. Although I have little to no background in geology, I found the class easy.
I loved this class. I took Environmental Studies in high school so it was kinda helpful but I'm not an Earth Science major. He truly cares about his students and tries to make lectures funny. Personally, I laughed at his jokes. He knows what he is talking about and explains the material very well.
The lectures are only fun if you listen. There are only 5 assignments and the first two are difficult because they're math based. He's hilarious and very passionate. There's no final just two mid terms. YOU NEED TO GO TO LECTURE BECAUSE THE BOOK IS TRASH. A lot of slides but you're only responsible for what he covers in class.
Reminds me of Chris Traeger from Parks and Rec, both in looks and in personality. His jokes often involve smiling as he makes fun of himself, much like Chris after he was dumped by Jerry Gergich's daughter, Millicent. Homework gets confusing because not everything is in the book. Ton of slides in every PowerPoint. Nice guy.
He's a pretty zany guy, I wish I was able to take more classes with him. I will say though, the problem sets didn't really prepare me for the exams.
he is the best. Take this class over Earth 124I. Matt is so kind and funny and makes the class understandable, he wants you to succeed. exams are a little hard but he curves them. problem sets are also diffucult but go to office hours.
His slides can be a bit misleading as far as midterm content goes, but he is such a funny man. He'll include random animal pictures that will make you fall out of your seat laughing. His exams include funny questions too. Unfortunately, the problem sets are key for doing well on the midterm, and they can be pretty tricky. But overall he's great.
We love Matty J! He's my favorite professor at UCSB! His lecture slides are definitely not boring since there are random animal pictures scattered throughout them.
Matty J!!!!! My favorite lecturer I have had at UCSB. Super chill, really into the material, and objectively deserves a chili pepper.
