TAKE THIS PROF!! He is stellar, I have never been so fascinated by lectures as I have been in his class. His lectures on the books you read in this class are uniquely top-tier. Great discussions. TAs are phenomenal. Mainly graded by 3 shorter essays-- do the reading and go to lecture (not mandatory but oh, so worth it), and you'll be set.
I think I attended less than half of the lectures over the quarter because they never seemed to have much important information that couldn't just be found on Canvas, and I still ended up getting an A-, so if you need the class, take care of something else during the actual lecture time
his lectures weren't very necessary for assignments, but could still be helpful just in general. I do wish he wouldn't speak about Judeo-Christian beliefs as mythology in respect towards those who practice those religions. Jesus loves you!!
Professor Donnelly was one of the most interesting professors I had. His class for Science Fiction was really interesting with some great reads, making the papers easy and fun to write. If you have an enjoyment for the subject I highly recommend taking his class. His lectures aren't directly necessary but can give an outlook on the readings.
Donnelly is one of those professors who make it so that lectures aren't necessary but extremely helpful. He was really accessible during hybrid which was nice, and even better in person. Pretty easy to pick and choose what you read for the papers, but make sure you read what you're writing on. My TA was very responsible so overall good experience.
Interesting lectures with amazing TAs. Homework due every Friday or Sunday, sometimes both, but very doable. 3 papers that had straightforward prompts and a lot of support from TAs/lecture. This class is an easy A if you put in the effort and keep up with assignments.
Good class with interesting material. The class is graded mostly by Nectir posts and essays. An easy A if you do the assignments. Lectures are short but are somewhat confusing on how it connects to the class. Overall, a good class but I did not learn too much.
Funny guy who seems to care about his students. Didn't take attendance. Lecture material was pretty self-explanatory; I still went b/c I enjoyed class. Lots of papers (that's to be expected), but he offered a lot of support. Go to lectures before essay due dates bc he gives you a lot of material that you can use in your papers.
Professor Donnelly is a great instructor. He is funny, and makes a potentially boring lecture pretty interesting. He offers extra credit, and your grade is determined by 3 mini essays, 3 medium ones(longest was 850 words), and section participation(mostly based on attendance). A great class to satisfy your English requirement!
Great lecturer, and really funny! Summer session is definitely easier and more relaxed compared to a typical quarter. Readings are interesting and not difficult to keep up with. Attendance is crucial, as he examines specific quotes and symbols during lectures that definitely appear on quizzes/tests.
When I took this class, it went from 6:30 PM to 7:45 PM, so I would say Prof. Donnelly did a good job making a class that late interesting. I showed up to most of the lectures, even though they were not mandatory and most people would not show up. I found him interesting and I hope to take at least 1 Upper-Div course with him someday!
Great professor, go to lecture to get reading notes and help on interpreting books. grades based on essays
Donnelly is a pretty cool professor, but lectures get a bit too philosophical and can drag. Interesting and diverse readings: poetry, a dystopian and graphic novel, and a Shakespeare play. Grade is based off 3 mini assignments and 3 short essays. If youre already a good writer you'll get an easy A
His lectures were really fun to listen to. Probably my favorite professor ever. No final, but there are 3 essays and 3 close readings + a little extra credit
Donnelly is a fun guy, and is clearly very intelligent, however he does a somewhat poor job of communicating how to develop literary analysis skills. If you are already good with English you should be fine, however the class is essentially the same as AP Lit with slightly stranger readings. We read Titus Andronicus for some reason. Pretty solid.
I really enjoyed Donnelly's class. The reading were super interesting, and the class itself was pretty relaxed but still emphasized participation. He took the effort to learn everyone's names which was nice, too. Attendance isn't mandatory, but it's highly recommended and would definitely help enhance understanding of readings.
Loved this class. Fascinating material and concepts. Donnelly is a funny and charismatic man and his lectures are extremely illuminating. 2 essays, 1 final. The final was brutal length-wise (5 mini essays if I remember correctly), but you'll have fun throughout the quarter so I still recommend the course.
I really enjoyed Donnelly as a professor. At times, his lectures tended to be a bit stream-of-consciousness making it hard to take exact notes, but as long as you are in class and absorbing the information, you will do well. He is a very sweet and funny professor and is incredibly kind during office hours. Highly recommend
He's a really great professor who respects what the students have to say and definitely has a lot of knowledge on the subject matter. I hope I can take more of his classes later on!
Professor Donnelly is my favorite professor at UCSB. I've taken him for ENGL 181LV and ENGL192 as well, and would take anything else he taught. He is amazing, caring, and very passionate about his subject matter in every course. Course work is very manageable, 3 papers for this course, 2 + a final in 192, and 2 quizzes + final paper in 181LV.
Donnelly is knowledgeable and engaging, but what really stands out about him is the way he interacts with his students. Some UCSB professors come off (perhaps unintentionally) as aloof and inaccessible. Donnelly is different. He never makes students feel bothersome or irrelevant. He ensures that students feel like their contributions are valued.
This class is intended for english majors, but I took it for a lit GE. All 4 books were really good. Donnelly has really high expectations but gives a lot of feedback on papers and his lectures are so entertaining that I, a student with really spotty attendance, didn't miss a single one. He's likely my favorite professor at UCSB
Donnelly is one of my favorite professors by far. He's smart, caring, hilarious, and shows a genuine passion for your learning. He's definitely not easy, but if you go to lecture, do the reading, and try, it's a very do-able class.
one of my favorite professors ever at UCSB. third time taking his class. love love love him. expectations are very clear. he doesn't expect much more than thoughtful discussion.
