The first half of this class has a different professor, Dr. Even jokes and kind of rambles then loads a lot of vocabulary quickly in lectures. Tests used lecture concepts but also had to understand specifics a person could google for vocabulary matching questions
this class was not enjoyable for me as a gen bio major who isn't invested in aquatic communities at all. but that being said, i think the exams get easier when you pay attention to the hints given in the review sessions. i got kinda reamed but it got better once i adjusted to the exam style. prepare to memorize details yet apply concepts.
he is such an amazing lecturer and his classes are so engaging! attendance not required (aside from section) since lectures were recorded, but lectures are so interactive and he does a mini review session at the start of each one that is not always recorded that contains basically everything on the exams. unironically the best prof at UCSB.
Dr. Even makes you work for your grade. His tests are mostly essays with some matching and fill in the blank. He mostly tests based on how well you understand the material rather than memorization. Write detailed notes for the full story, some of the stuff he says isn't always in his lecture slides. Funny and engaging lectures though (EEMB 159 too)
His classes are frustrating. I've taken a few of them. He does a good job of getting students to understand the material but doesn't do a good job of testing this knowledge. TA's are unreasonably harsh graders considering the vagueness of his assignments and sometimes the test questions as well.
He's a good lecturer which is his main strength. His lectures are well structured and easy to follow. That said his tests suck. Doesn't communicate well with students on expectations for tests OR assignments which constitute 100% of the grade. At the end of the day it's useless for students to learn the material well just to be set up for failure
im not sure why anyone would reccommend this professor but go figure. he's the worst kind of professor out there. The test are all FREE RESPONSE and you have to memorize word for word what is on the lecture slides or forget it. He proctors the class on top of that. guys just stay away from this professor.
Even is a great professor and lecturer that really cares about the students and their academic success. But it is really important to attend his lectures because his slides do not contain all the information needed for the exam so be prepared to take good notes. Also, make use of his office hours and review session before finals.
Even is one of the best professors at UCSB and one of two faculty in the EEMB department that is not research based, his primary focus is teaching not research which is rare. Grading is mostly based on tests which are challenging but fair. He uses everything from matching to hypothetical free response to test understanding rather than memorization
Even is one of the best lecturer's in the EEMB/MCDB departments. He makes seemingly dull subjects interesting, and is the most engaging lecturer I have had. Attendance is mandatory in his class as he explains most concepts verbally and does not write a lot on his slides that he tests on.
He makes lectures so enjoyable. He can be a little intimidating, but it just makes listening to lectures easier!
Even is THE BEST professor I have ever had. He is incredible for upper divs; he made freshwater ecology so interesting! His tests make you memorize info but you also have to synthesize answers and do problem solving, so you need to really understand the material. Don't buy the book! Go to lecture, slides aren't comprehensive (he adds on info).
Even is an amazing professor. He makes biology, even the branches of biology that I originally had no interest in, seem so much more fascinating. He makes the subject matter come alive. I came away from each of his lectures feeling that I had learned a lot and had spent my time well.
great professor…. If I was bald like him. his tests are way too long. the final was near 100 questions. he tries to be cool by making jokes in video modules we have to watch but he tries too hard and just adds to the time of the videos to make it seem like we are learning. i spend only like 2 mins writing notes out of the 30 mins when he talks blah
It's ok, he likes to rant a lot and go off topic in lecture. The lectures are twice as long as they need to because of this.Exams are hard and will trick you, but gives a good amount of time for it. lot of discussion is different topics and the readings come from news articles so I get confused how to connect it to the lectures slides.
Visually and systematically well-formatted for online, but content deviates heavily from neutrality to partisanship. This course aims to set a platform to indoctrinate rather than educate, discouraging academic exploration or open discussions on complex topics.Students are forced to align answers with course agenda on linguistically confusing tests.
Really enjoyed his lectures! Fun class, but definitely have to study. Tests make up the vast majority of the grade.
Professor Even's lectures are engaging and he clearly cares about his students' success. Prepping with unstuckstudy and the free textbook should help you ace his challenging but fair exams.
His lectures are very detailed and easy to understand. The way he formats the class though feels like it can be a lot of work sometimes, and the time limit for quizzes and the tests can be intimidating. There are quite a few things due each week but it wasn't bad. His exams are hard but if you study and really understand, you should be fine!
Dr. Even is just amazing. His style of teaching is unmatched and is probably the most informative and engaging way for students to learn. His midterms are extremely fair and considering the means for both midterms were above 80%, you can tell his teaching is effective and grading is fair. love him and his bald head.
Professor Even is awesome!! His lectures were clear and he explained everything so well. He is obviously very passionate about his work. His exam was online but still challenging so preparing is definitely still necessary. However, if you study, you'll be totally fine.
He's great! Lectures are very content heavy, but the exams were fair. 3 exams, each not cumulative, and he drops the lowest test score. Exams are only half of your grade, so it's easy to get an A. Lectures and interesting, and he tries to make it fun and engaging.
Havent even talked his midterm yet but literally just wanted to say hes best lecturer ive ever had this school by far and maybe throughout all of my education my entire life. Dude is so into and understands what he is teaching so well its so interesting
Prof Even is extremely organized and the material is really easy to cover in your own time. His lectures are really entertaining. Material is not hard if you took science classes in HS. Tests are very reasonable. I didn't have to read the book to do well. Great Area C for a Humanities Student!!!!
