The two midterms + final are all in-person timed writes (two timed essays for the final), so beware. I definitely struggled because timed writes aren't my strong suit, but he is truly a nice guy who knows his material in and out. Heavy on reading, which you actually have to do because he expects you to reference them in your essays.
Professor Parks class was definitely difficult. Your grade is dependent on 3 essays which you need to read in order to get a good grade. Writing notes for lectures is smart but not necessarily mandatory to succeed. As long as you include the notes and readings in your essays he is a fair grader. But, you cant bs because he wrote the book.
Professor Park was a great professor! He is very passionate about his class and gives honest feedback about your essays to help you do better. There are A LOT of readings each week and reading them is essential (my downfall) if you want to write a great essay. Overall, great class, not an easy GE so don't take it unless willing to put in the work.
prof park is amazing!! his lectures are so informational and go so well with his book/readings he posts! im in his honors section and he is so great, hell even review your essay before you submit it. he is super flexible and accommodating! i highly recommend prof park!!
Took ASAM2 during summer and Prof Park is one of the most enthusiastic professors I've ever met. He REALLY cares about his students and tries his best to accommodate to every student's needs. BUT, there are TONS of readings that you MUST do every week in order to at least receive a C in the course. 4 weekly quizzes & 2 essays! Challenging but fun!
Took this course in Fall 2020. Prof. Park makes u buy his book. Surprised by how this class isnt a writing course. 3 essays in total, each 5-7 pages. There were also weekly quizzes. Prof. spoke too much during lectures and went off-topic. Instructions and rubrics are not clear. TAs are trained to be tough graders. Not a smart choice to fulfill GE.
Took online in Fall. Accused students of cheating since weekly quizzes (multiple choice) didn't reflect how bad ppl did in the midterm (essays)... doesn't make sense since they are totally different. Stalks how much time you spend on GS & makes his judgement on your work ethic on that. Passionate teacher, but not favorable in an online setting.
Professor Park is an amazing and passionate teacher, but I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone who struggles with history classes and essays. The content is interesting despite the heavy reading (around 100-150 pgs per week). Reading isn't mandatory for most TAs, but make sure to work REALLY hard on the essays because they make up your grade.
Took this class remotely during COVID. The lectures are posted to Gauchospace and you have to attend your section. The material itself is interesting, and he is passionate about it. The weekly quizzes are a breeze, but you have to work hard on the Midterm and Final to get an A. If you focus on the lectures, youll be fine. He tends to ramble FYI
(Taken during COVID quarter) Very nice guy, cares about his students (gives fatherly advice, it was super sweet). Weekly quizzes were very easy. Had plenty of time for two midterm essays, one final essay. Tends to ramble during lectures. Attendance for section was decided by each TA.
He was a great professor, fun GE!
Professor Park is amazing! I learned SO much and his exams are extremely reasonable and straightforward. Course content itself is very relevant and engaging. He clearly lays out what you need to do in order to be a successful college student and writer and its clear that he is incredibly passionate about what he teaches.
Prof. Park was one of my favorite professors so far at UCSB. He makes it very clear that this subject specifically AS AM 2 is his true passion. He is very funny, and pretty easy going. There are a few writing assignments but most are a max of 5 pages. Not a tough class if you read/skim most of the readings and try and make it to lectures.
Prof. Park is such a king. His mind is brilliant and his lectures were excellent. Your TA will make a huge difference in how you do, so beware. It's easy to pass the class, but definitely not an easy A, if that's what you're looking for. All exams are essays/writing so you gotta know the material.
Interesting class but not an easy GE. Park knows the course material inside and out and does a good job lecturing. Readings are mostly optional but some are needed for exams. As a CoE, I took this class P/NP!
He was very down to Earth. His lectures were easy to follow and he always urged us to speak up if we were confused or had any questions. It was a lot of work and memorization, but as long as you at least paid a little attention in lecture, you should be able to pass.
Loved Professor Park! Great professor that made the content super interesting. You have to go to lecture - he doesn't post the slides online. Content isn't super hard, but this class has a LOT of reading - get study group and split up the work. Tests are all essays, so if you're not good at essay tests ... don't take the class.
I had Prof. Park for AS AM 2 and I not only found the class highly interesting, I also thoroughly enjoyed his lectures. He flows extremely well from one topic to another and can be quite humorous at times as well. Though the readings can be overwhelming at times, they are all relevant to the course and he bases his exams of these articles.
ASAM 2 was one of the best GE's I've ever taken at UCSB. Granted, it was difficult reading all those assignments weekly, but it was already really interesting to read. Lectures are optionals because they don't have TOO much to do with the exams, so you just need to make sure to read. You're guaranteed at least 1 essay question from his practice!!
Amazing professor, but my one pet peeve with this class is that the exams (2 midterms and a final) are directly based on the articles you are assigned to read, which can be annoying if you know the subject matter at hand, but may not remember the exact specifics of the MANY articles you need to read and memorize.
An A in the class is hard, but a B+ is easy. Of the GE's I took, this was by far my favorite. You need to show up to lecture, but you learn so many interesting things. There is a lot of material outside that you need to read in order to be prepared for midterms. Section is optional. Overall one of the most useful classes I have taken for a GE.
One of the best professors/teachers I've ever had. His lectures were always so interesting and relevant. I will say the readings are quite lengthy (130-160 pages on average)but definitely don't skip them because they come up on exams!
Honestly my favorite professor and favorite class. Prof Park is organized, passionate about the subject, understanding, and inspiring. Everyone says the readings were long (100-150pgs) but they are all relevant to his lectures. Definitely keep up with the readings and never leave them to the last minute. Also, he brings candy/cookies to exams. :)
Professor Park is amazing! He kept me engaged and interested in lecture throughout the entire quarter. This class has no homework besides assigned readings. Which is great because it can done on your own time, but you definitely have to work hard to do well on the midterms and final!
