THEAT180B . King W D 3 Years Ago

Many of the students in the class, myself included, felt his grading was often unfair, and some of his feedback on larger assignments were downright offensive and unprofessional.

Dr. King initially started out as a decent guy. As the quarter went on, he became very rude and judgemental. It seemed as though all essays were based on his opinion rather than writing quality. Along with this, he did not hesitate to make underlying racist remarks regarding Wilson's "The Piano Lesson." Only take his class if you can kiss a**.

Class was fun and interesting. He was very passionate about the subject which made it easy to learn. Also, you get to watch many clips, videos and movies. You don't even have to buy the books, since you can easily find them in the library. Even though the prompts for the essay were unclear at times, he was very lenient with the grading.

although he is very passionate about theater and incredibly well read, he is completely and utterly boring to listen to and often goes off about topics that seem unrelated to the piece being discussed.

Really sweet prof and you can tell how passionate he is about the material. Many of the assignments (3 papers, written final) were really convoluted, but your TA will likely clarify what they are looking for (they also aren't very hard). Don't worry about skipping lecture, you'll be fine. Super chill class but final was rough.

I knew I was going to love this class and I was not disappointed! The material was super interesting and Dr. King was so kind. He is clearly passionate about what he does and that shows in his lectures. He expects a lot from students and isn't just going to hand you an A, but if you do the work and show interest in the class you'll be fine.

You're graded based on 2 essays and 2 tests and some participation. Pretty easy and straight forward class. But his lectures are so long I felt like 80 years went by by the time class ended. He just rambles in for 2 hours about random stuff from the plays. Chill guy tho. Hes old school type of bro

Do not take his class! The guy is so boring and tiring that I want to just leave his class! This guy does not know how to talk straight to the point! I ask him a question, for improving my grade, and he does absolutely nothing to help me improve my grade!! Such a bad teacher and professor! Do not take his class! You will regret it afterward! Boring

Such a bad professor to begin with. His lectures are extremely tiring and boring. Wanna get some sleep in class, go take his class. You will fall asleep and get some good rest. Such a bad class, I would never take again

I suggest to you all that you steer very clear from this Professor, from the lectures being super boring, to the midterm, being that there are 6 essays to write in under 75 minutes. How crazy is this guy!? Such a bad professor. Lectures are boring and hard to understand. He explains everything. But it is hard for me to know. Very Bad!! Do not do it

Great guy, but he dives deep into the origins of words used in plays, so it was difficult to sit through lectures. If those types of things dont interest you I wouldnt recommend taking the class, especially since he would drone on about one slide for 30+ minutes. We had 3 papers & the midterm and final are both free response but very long.

I enjoyed this class because as an English and Film major, I found reading and attending the plays helpful. However, his lectures DRAGGED and I missed a few- if you don't read the plays, attending class is your best bet because he goes in depth, and the midterm and test are extremely specific that you SHOULD read. Nice prof, boring lectures.

Lectures are so long you won't want to go. At all.

Professor King is really nice and very passionate about theater but is honestly one of the worst professors I've had here so far. His lectures are very long and boring with no substance to them. He just goes off on tangents and doesn't give you any sources to refer to while he lectures. He only grades off of two papers, a midterm, and a final.

Prof King is an amazing professor! The plays we read were very interesting and two of them were being performed that quarter! My TA was very knowledgable and added to the experience. Midterm and final are essay questions. There were 3 outside performances that we had to see. 3 papers throughout. Attendance was mandatory with a sign in sheet.

very nice and clearly passionate about the subject. attendance required in lecture/section (20% of grade) but you dont rlly have to pay attention. 3 essays/1 midterm/1 final. tests are all essay. all of his prompts are VERY long and convoluted for no reason (like full page). graded hard by my TA. read plays/know vocab

Very enthusiastic professor who loves what he teaches! Lectures are pretty good, although he does tend to focus more on etymology than actual theatrical analysis. I definitely learned a lot! Show up, do the reading and get friendly with your TA. Really enjoyed this class and would take it again!

I took his Freshman Seminar on Collecting and I thought it was a really interesting seminar and as a collector himself he had a lot of expertise on the subject. He's also a very thoughtful professor, he brought us snacks for the last classes. Participation is key and there is a presentation and short essay at the end.

Suuuuper easy class with not a lot of studying required. King is passionate about theater and will make you want to be an actor yourself. Be prepared to cough up some cash for books (plays) and mandatory performances.

You can get away with not having to buy the books, but definitely helpful to have them infront of you in class. Not a theater person myself, so I couldnt really get into discussions. Fair grader. Good personality. Wish Id have a better appreciation for the subject beforehand

Has the coolest collections of the most random things. Very interesting seminar. Always left learning something new. I highly recommend his collection seminar!

Great lecturer, very enthusiastic and interesting to listen to. This class was really enjoyable and he grades pretty fairly. The only thing is, he doesn't give study guides but I think his grading doesn't really require it if you read the material and attend lectures.

Obviously very passionate about his subject; but, as he waxes eloquent, my interest wanes. Goes off on many irrelevant tangents during lectures. Focus on etymology of theater words and not on actual play analysis itself. Your TAs will save you if you do all of the reading. Essays for the midterm and final, 3 essays, and attendance of plays ($$)
