This prof is one of the best at UCSB. I went to office hours for help and we ended up taking and I found it out he majored in physics in college. He ended up helping me with my physics homework lol I'm not even kidding. Very generous and supportive guy, and is super smart and knows everything without making you feel stupid!
The reading is a bit heavy but the content itself isn't the worst. I would say the worst part of EACS 4A is the participation requirements needed to earn points.
A lot of reading, and lectures were very dense with information, but overall pretty good. Tests were reasonable in content and grading.
There is way too much information crammed into each lecture. Readings are heavy, but tests are reasonable: you have to recall information about topics discussed in the course. This course is interesting though.
I looked forward to Professor Fleming's lectures, and appreciated his clear slides and the way he paused to emphasize important concepts. The reading was heavier than I expected, but the assignments and quizzes were pretty easy. He was welcoming in office hours and seemed to genuinely enjoy talking with us.
Professor Mazanec's dense lectures are essentially information dumps, and are sometimes hard to follow. Readings are lengthy and tedious, but there are very few assignments other than the readings. The midterm and final are easy, and grading is reasonable. I wish the lectures were a bit more engaging, but the class was fine overall.
If you have classes before his, get ready to have a ton of information thrown at you. His lecture slides provide a ton of information and he can elaborate too much at some points.
This class was awesome! I didn't know what to expect and it was hard at the beginning reading old texts, but I learned SOOO MUCH about grammar and modern Japanese (not just classical!) including things I never learned in my other Japanese classes. Those professors are fantastic too though. Nothing but love for the Japanese program at UCSB!!!
For a summer class, it's pretty easy. Essays are short and the readings are honestly not super necessary, skimming should be fine.
Best professor ever. The course is async so you can do the lectures whenever you want, he's extremely flexible. The lectures are interesting and fascinating. Did not expect a literature GE to be my favorite GE class.
Caring and learned prof. He is very passionate about what he teaches. Get ready to pay attention to the lectures.
Tom must be the best professor that I have encountered in UCSB! I am also taking his Chinese 80 now. It fulfills many GE areas. Don't miss it. I would say all of his classes are very interesting and you really will learn something from his classes. Also, he prepares every lecture very well. Love you, Tom!
