This class is great! I highly recommend it to any student regardless of major. The class is graded on 3 papers of your choice and his lectures are not only informative but hilarious as well. I should mention he is a tough grader on those 3 papers. Attendance is not taken, but because of McAuley's lecture style, you won't want to miss class.
Read 7 books throughout the quarter, 3 of which we had to write analytical essays. No midterm or final, grade solely based on weekly section assignments and essays. Interesting, engaging lectures and all-around amazing lecturer; very clear and helpful and passionate
Great, enthusiastic, funny guy. No powerpoints, and no tests, only papers. But the great thing is you don't really have to read much bc he discusses the books during lecture, so attendance is key. His teaching style is great, its more of an open dialogue than a long boring lecture.
McAuley is very personable & gives great lectures to support relevant themes. The class was less stressful than others due to just three papers (no midterm or final). However, bc papers are graded by TA's, it is more helpful to discuss topics with them as opposed to professor. Do the reading and put thought into essays in order to do well
Material and lecture seem easy .Lecture isn't mandatory and all the professor does is have a discussion with the class. 3 papers. No final or midterm. Concepts of the papers are fair until you get them back. TAs grade papers very hard for no reason. Don't take for a GE. Average paper scores were Cs. Letter graded class only.
Chris' lectures are always full of energy and expertise. Many lectures are spent watching docu's, so that it's not always just listening to him which is a good alternation. He's open for questions - but it's also necessary to participate, so if you want to sit back and just listen his lecture's are not for you! (he appreciates all answers though)
lecture is pointless. 3 essays. section is mandatory so go.
GO TO SECTION! The lecture is all about the reading. No midterm, no final, but three essays. Is a nice, different class to take. Chris is super cool, but the lectures are very easy to zone out in. They are all about the readings and consist of him asking questions to us and then talking.
Nice guy, likes to interact with class and get to know his students. Speaks freely and doesn't sugar coat anything. Lectures are a bit boring and you don't really need to go as long as you somewhat read the books. Played 4 documentaries instead of lecturing. 3 essays, no midterm or final. Pretty easy as long as your you can write a decent paper.
Chris is the man. Lectures are more discussions to help you understand/learn about history, events, people, etc. He treats students as equal people, not condescending. Always tries to remember names. Always friendly. Fair grading. Just a reasonable guy and reasonable class. Only downfall is a lot of reading, but they're needed for essays.
I. Love. Chris Mcauley. He is my favorite teacher at UCSB. Not only is he extremely knowledgable but he is so so helpful and really engages the class. He takes the time to get to know students and he's really down to earth, so sweet, and he's hilarious. He really cares about his students, subject and what he does.
Such a good class! McAuley is super cool and he takes the time to really get to know and help his students. Class is more like a discussion of the books, and its easy to follow if you do the reading. There's only 2 4-page papers and 3 10-question quizzes on the books and in class movies. I recommend this class!
THIS CLASS WAS HORRIBLE! All of the ratings say that it is easy, but he just started giving reading quizzes that are SO HARD. You have the read all of the books IN DEPTH to do well on these quizzes. The essays are also graded really hard and section is mandatory. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. It is not worth all the GE's it covers, pick something else!
4/5 books were super difficult to read. 3 papers, no midterm, no final, lectures not mandatory, so pretty good deal overall. My TA was super annoying though, especially at 8am.
Great professor. His lectures are very interesting and he actually makes an effort to get to know his students. The material is pretty easy, but there is a lot of reading every week. Sections are mandatory and there are 3 papers for this class. If you need to fulfill a writing requirement or a GE this is a great class to take.
Bl St 137E. I enjoyed his lectures, does a good job going over the readings and their main points. Grade consisted of 3 book reports (read 3 out of 6 books) No midterm/final. Defin take it! It also covers Soc req.
Section is mandatory, but going to lecture isn't. Still, I suggest going to most of them--McAuley really makes an effort to explain the most important topics during lecture, which makes writing the 3 papers easier. It's an easy class, but the material can get repetitive. Still, I'd recommend taking McAuley!
Very easy class and really interesting. Section is mandatory but going to lectures isn't all that necessary. You read around 5 books but only need to read 4. If you need to fulfill a writing requirement definitely take this course
Fabulous professor. Comes to class with no notes but puts together a brilliant lecture on the fly, tying in readings, class discussion, and usually a reference to Dave Chapelle. 3 papers- 25% of grade each, 25% based on participation. Shows movies sometimes. Readings are varied in style and interesting.
He takes the time to learn the students names during lecture. VERY INTERESTING CLASS.
I honestly enjoyed the class! It isn't much of a lecture, but more of a discussion. Make sure to read the books so you can participate in class! He really likes that! The 3 papers were pretty fair, 4 pages each. You can easily get an A, so don't forget to go to section!
He's funny, cool, clear, and not boring. This class requires to read many books and write papers about them, no tests given, some quizzes, and section is mandatory. 75% of the grade of the class is based in 3 papers. Pretty good deal
Very clear, mostly simple concepts. Lot of books to read but you don't have to read them all. 3 Papers and no final, you have to participate in section because its 1/4 of your grade
Awesome guy. Awesome class. 3 papers, easy and interesting. Do it
