Great prof, easy class (took it online), just doing weekly quizzes which are open book, readings were straight forward and you can skim

I enjoyed taking this class during S22! The online format was amazing. Grading was out of 200 points, with 10 quizzes at 10pts each, 2 discussion posts at 3pts each (every week), and a final paper at 40pts. Quizzes were open-book and had an hour time limit. The 3-5 page paper was straightforward. I would recommend this class & professor!

An online class shared with all UC campus. The content of deception detection is very intriguing, and Dunbar is really an expert in the field. The pre-recorded lectures are brief and informative. Weekly quiz is simple as long as you watch the lecture. The 3 pages paper is also fairly graded.

Deception Comm was so interesting and Dunbar is a great professor! The class was half online and will be entirely online next quarter, which makes it so much easier and less stressful. Just 10 weekly quizzes, 5 group discussion posts, and a short group paper. You can earn 2% extra credit by doing SONA studies. Take this class!

I took this class as it was transitioning from in-person to online, so it was a super unique experience. As this course switching to fully online in Fall 19 I would say you should definitely take this class if you have other challenging courses you need to take at the same time. Weekly quizzes instead of a midterm + final was literally the best.

Only quizzes online (super easy!) Lectures are interesting. Class in general is easy and she's super knowledgable (she works with Judy Burgoon!!!) I don't know why Norah gets lame reviews because she's honestly super chill and a smart lady. Highly recommend! The class is hybrid now but turning into an all online class.

Deception communication could be the most interesting class you have ever taken. Dunbar seems to know this and go out of her way to make it as dry and boring as possible. She gives off a hostile attitude if you go to her office hour to ask for help and straight up lies about the exam not being rote memorization. She's here to research not teach.

This class was interesting but I feel like i spent the quarter writing lists rather than notes. Lots of room for getting the grade up (discussion posts, essay, extra credit) but the lists/ heavy notes were a lot for me. Interesting class though and not impossible to do well at all. Doesn't take roll but you shouldn't miss many lectures

Her deception class was very interesting, but she wasn't very helpful in terms of assignments and tests. Everything is memorization based instead of application. The only thing she discussed for the midterm and final was the scantron we needed.

I was really excited for this class, and thought the topic was quite interesting, I just thought she lacked a passion for teaching. Studying for her tests is near impossible, the questions are EXTREMELY detail specific, and rarely test your ability to understand the concept (a lot of memorization, not a lot of applied learning). I expected better.

Dunbar is clearly super knowledgeable about her subjects which is super cool to learn from. She uses a menu grading system which is confusing but nice once you get a hang of it. you basically choose what assignments you want to do.

Professor Dunbar is a really fair professor in the comm department. I thought her lectures were concise and made the class content easy to follow.

Norah is a good lecturer and she is available for office hours if needed but she is not a very empathetic person. Also, she does not do any lecture about the book which I really don't understand why. The online course is very organized but I would not take the class if you want a motivational and inspirational course.

I really LOVED this class. Very straightforward. Only Dr. Dunbar could make an online course just as fulfilling -if not more fulfilling- than an in-person class and I usually hate online classes. I also took Deception with her and both classes were amazing. She keeps lectures short and doesn't simply restate what we read in the textbook. Take it!!

The best comm professor ever taken! Highly recommended!

Do not take a class by her. Lectures were dry and her explanations were not helpful. Her tests are worse. Tests had very specific questions about really unimportant things. Other people in the department don't seem to think highly of her as a lecturer. If this had been my first comm class, I would've left the major. Made me hate comm theory.

Heads up, EVERYTHING is on the test, especially bold words, so take notes verbatim and condense them later. She doesn't share her slides. Pretty much half your grade is the final so get credit where you can. Section assignments are easy though. One research paper, midterm, and a final. Your attendance and section assignments worth very little.

You have to work pretty hard to get a good grade in her class. Read all the readings and make sure you catch the small little things. She doesn't offer extra credits and your grades are basically based on 1 midterm, 1 final paper, and 1 final exam. Her exams are also pretty tricky :/

Fairly easy A. Although lecture attendance isn't mandatory, Dunbar's lectures are very organized and help you understand the topic a lot better than just reading the book. The tests weren't that bad if you read the book and go to lecture. The paper was the most difficult part (no clear rubric), but she and the TAs are willing to help.

Dunbar is very knowledgeable on different comm theories and her lectures are clearly structured so you know what material you'll need to remember for the tests. Her tests are pretty complex though and you'll definitely need to study a lot because she tends to pick out weird details about concepts that you'll need to know very specifically.
