Bigelow's 4A class was an easy A. As long as you attend (and pay attention to) his lectures, they are clear and easy to understand. Both the midterm and the final were very straightforward (you are also allowed a note-card). The WebWork is insanely easy. Bigelow answers questions very clearly and is approachable. Great professor!
The online lecture notes were extremely helpful when studying for the exams. Make sure to go to CLAS and sections. (Miss 2 sections and your grade goes down half a grade A-->A-) Midterms got 85%, then 100%. Final 95%. Straightforward test questions just know the basics he doesnt try to trick you.
I thought he was a pretty good teacher. As the quarter progressed, I felt I adjusted more to his teaching style. Make sure you sit in the front of the class because it is easy to get distracted in the big class. Math 4A was generally easy and tended to be a repetition of the same concepts but with different vocabulary names. Tests are very easy!!
Professor Bigelow is definitely one of the better math teachers on campus. He's hard to understand sometimes and is usually not clear during his lectures. He's a sweet man, though! Midterms were easy-got As on both. Final was basically the same format as the midterms but x2. Easy A as long as you go to CLAS and attend your sections regularly.
Easy class especially if you have done matrices/vertices in the past. (Or taking ENGR 3 at the same time). However, due to the class size (650+), he was unclear and hard to comprehend during lectures. His homework and iclicker questions should be the key to his tests. Good teacher, compared to the reputation of the other math teachers at UCSB.
Very smart and passionate. Go to lecture and pay attention to pass. Tests are easy and mimic the Webwork/iClicker questions. TAs are helpful as well. You should have no problem passing if you put in an ounce of effort.
Has absolutely no idea what he is doing. Ended up skipping more than half the lectures. Only thing that got me to pass the class was CLAS.
Hes really funny and i like going to his class
He must be part computer or something, because his lectures are robotic, boring, and borderline useless. His only emotions seem to be condescension and derision. Does not care about students or if they are learning the material. Has hard iClicker questions and then does a terrible job explaining them, if at all. Avoid avoid avoid!
He is by far the best prof in math department, super helpful! must went to his OH! i didn't do well on midterms but I worked really hard and went to his OH all the time, eventually got a A+ ;)
Lecture was fine, he was clear and easy to understand. IMPOSSIBLE tests, I am normally an A math student and I barely passed this class
pretty much need to go to class but tests are easy and so are problem sets.
One of the best math profs at the school. Pretty clear. Goes over hw in class and in office hours. Tests are really easy. Good prof and a good class with him.
Awesome prof. I didn't read the book and just went to his lectures. He's very clear in his explanations, and I understood whatever he said the first time he said it. He has reasonable expectations; not too easy, not too hard.
make sure you do the homework and go to office hours if you're confused. really helpful and friendly professor!
He is a good professor. He can explain the theorem clearly. He gave some challenging question as the homework. At first, I think he is a boring guy but after a quarter, I think his class is interesting.
great prof
Good prof. You should go to class. Really nice guy. Good at explaining stuff one on one.
Really, really, enjoyed the honors seminar with Karel. The man knows his stuff and offered a great intro to pure and advanced mathematics. Don't expect integrals or derivatives in this truly engaging math class. Thanks prof!
Easiest math class I ever took. Most of the concepts covered, especially in the first half of the quarter, were basic algebra most people learned in high school. Even when new concepts appeared, it was just basic derivatives and logarithms. Tests are easy as well, the midterm had only 6 questions and could be finished quickly.
Tests are fairly easy, and if the entire class does poor then he curves. Midterm was only 6 questions and Final was only 12. Class itself isn't too difficult, I personally didn't start learning new things until about 7 weeks in. Go to CLAS if you have any problems. Bigelow was a bit unclear at times, but always put forth an effort.
Professor Bigelow is a fairly easy professor is you reached algebra 2 in high school. Seriously. I am a psych major and I already knew almost all that we learned. He is sometimes unclear but does try to make sure everyone understands the material and engage the class with the clicker. Useless book. Easier than the other 34A prof. for this quarter
Bigalow cares immensely. Most of what all of lower division content is dictated by the department. He does not choose this. Give him a break, teaching in front of 600 people is intense. At office hours he would spend as much time as needed for you to understand the concept.
Probably one of the best professors at UCSB. For 108A just do the homework and go to class and you'll get an A. He's really fun and really helpful. Notice, all the bad reviews are from lower division math classes. But, most lower division math classes suck anyway, he's amazing but 3A-5C = Boring, and that's not his fault. Take him!
