Weber is a very nice guy, but this was a mediocre class. Grade relied on 4 things, midterm, final, mock trial, and paper, with the midterm average being 77%. The first half of the class focusing on video game history and the second focusing on video game addiction. Would I take him again? Maybe. Would I take the class again? No.
Prof Weber is so sweet and really cares about his students. But I do NOT recommend this class for those who do not care enough about video games. If you're passionate about this topic I'm sure you'll find it interesting. The mock trial was poorly managed and the two MC exams covered so much content though the final wasn't cumulative.
Dr. Weber is the best prof i've ever had! He is extremely knowledgeable and cares a ton about his students. No mandatory attendance but I still attended every class because it was fun and interesting. Grade was 2 tests and 1 paper, he provided study guides. Overall an amazing class and an amazing prof. Highly recommend!
Class graded on midterm final and mock trial. The mock trial was so poorly managed and organized. Roles are not equal. The midterm was based on SO much information and the most random things. Would not reccomend.
Prof Weber is so cool and he really cares about the video game industry. He has personally been involved with studies in the field and has lots of experience. He talks clearly and is very thorough in his lectures. If you take notes during the lecture you won't have to read. Papers are easy and overall this class really isn't time consuming at all.
One of the best online classes Ive ever taken ! Dr. Weber is a respected doctor with a Ph.D & MD. I will definitely take another one of his clases soon !
This was the most unreasonable class I've ever taken. Since it's remote, there are no tests, but huge time consuming competitively graded projects. This will definitely take time away from other classes and the grading criteria is not always clear or logical. I'm writing this to warn others like I wish I had been, He's a nice guy, but awful class.
Rene was an intelligent guy, but he had really high expectations for a summer class. be ready to listen to him repeat the same lecture, waste 30 minutes doing the roll call, and then throwing all of the extra work that you couldn't get to in class because he wouldn't stop rambling on irrelevant stories.
He's a good prof, very passionate about the subject, and cares about his students. He posts his lectures online, so it is easily accessible. The grade is made up of two exams and two debates and there's extra credit if you do sona. Even if you do bad on an exam, you can still get a pretty decent grade overall as the class is point based!
He will test you the specific numbers and years which definitely are meaningless. Lectures are boring. I don't like him.
Took both of his 3 week summer courses session G, and this guy is a real G, he's cooler then you'll ever be. Super qualified and intelligent, super nice guy as well. Really enthusiastic about his material and a trailblazer in his field. GO TO CLASS AND GET PARTICIPATION CREDIT. Final and midterm aren't too bad.
Very long-winded, it's hard to stay focused in his class. He's a knowledgeable and nice teacher, but it was just really hard for me to pay attention to his lengthy lectures. He goes off on tangents a lot too. His slides are similarly lengthy, small paragraphs instead of bullet points. I like him as a person and scholar... but as a lecturer, ehh
Entertaining guy and the material is pretty interesting. The tests are focused on the slides (which are online) so the substantial amount of reading isn't too much of a problem. 10pg paper and a 6pg paper so there is a fair amount of writing but both boosted my grade. Midterm and a final... both are mc and fairly common sense if you attend lecture
Horrible teaching methods, it was so hard to learn math ONLY through verbal lectures. rarely ever used whiteboard so you never got a visual, very impatient when students had questions. only learned in my section, so going to lecture was pointless. does not curve tests and then proceeded to complain about how bad his reviews are on here???
Took a very interesting 3 week class with Weber. Hes insanely passionate about the subject, which made it motivating for me. I really enjoyed this class, and wish it was longer because it felt rushed, but if you want to truly learn id recommend this prof.
The class was pretty interesting but Professor Weber, while a nice guy, is not a good lecturer. One day he spent an hour and 15 minutes on one slide. Most of his lectures aren't very helpful. The tests are pretty hard even though the material is not difficult to understand. Your grade consists of a midterm, final, paper, and debate attendance.
This course is compromised of three grades; a midterm, a final, and a debate paper. He reads off the lecture slides which are also posted on canvas. He's a really nice professor, however the fact that your grade is based off of only three assignments was stressful.
One group project, one solo project, and one test. These are the only items in your grade book. The lectures do go on for a long time, sometimes more than necessary, but all of the material will be on the final exam at the end of the quarter.
This review isn't the most helpful as I dropped the class halfway through (the day before the final deadline). However, Professor Weber has to be the worst teacher I have had at UCSB in my four years here. The lectures are boring and dated. His accent makes it difficult to understand and he goes on tangents like no other. No one pays attention.
Professor requires you to buy the textbook for $170 or $90 for the pdf version. He tells students that there is nothing he can do, but he is the one who wrote the textbook and chooses the text for the class. Very confusing lectures and does not explain the concepts as well as the TA. Shoutout to the TA or else no one would get through the class.
Professor Weber is definitely very kind and understanding, however I felt that he didn't convey the material and concepts very clearly. It was hard to understand at times -if you have no prior experience with statistics this class will be challenging for you. However, if you work and study hard on your own it's manageable.
2 tests and one debate. debate is easy but like 10 pages. nothing can really prepare you will for the tests and studying for them requires studying everything. lots of info in every lecture and even more in the readings. the book is pretty useless. if you just look over lectures its an easy C i'd say. he is very nice and has a great personality.
One of the worst class I've ever taken. The class material is easy to understand but you are graded on arbitrary things that are not based on your knowledge of the course material. Extremely unreasonable and harsh grading.
I dont know about regular quarters, but I would stay clear of this class while its online. The competitive grading scale is very harsh for the Kialo debate, especially since it is worth 20% of your grade. The grades were not dropped until the very end of the quarter, so we had no clear sense how we were doing.
