145 was great! 3 quizzes with 2 sa and 10 mc, which he provides clear study guides for & a midterm + final exam that were take-home essays that you get 3 ish days to write. lectures were interesting, and grading was fair. all readings were online and skimmable. def need to do the work and go to class to really understand, but not hard to do well.
Dr. Turowetz has been one of my favorite professors that I have taken within the Soc Department. His lectures are incredibly clear but still touch on extremely impactful information that is set up cohesively throughout the q. The gradebook consisted of 3 in class quizzes (10 MC and 2 SA) 2 short essay assignments, and a final. Def take, very easy!
good class and interesting, but there are 3 harder quizzes and 2 major assignments. the final project is doable and fairly easy, but a lot of reading for the class. not sure if it was just the ta for my class, but very harsh grading. stay on top of readings, multiple chapters assigned a day.
I love Professor Turowetz, and I highly recommend him to all soc students. He teaches you so much, really cares about sociology and his students, and is very clear in how to succeed. I found the classes I've taken with him, of which there have been many, to be easy enough to get a good grade while challenging ones intellect and still teaching me.
This professor's lectures are simply inaudible and the questions answered in class are vague and unresolved. The exams were only scoped and the class review did not help. The exam is only 30 minutes long and then you have to write two answer questions afterward. There was barely enough time. the TA was also very harsh in giving scores.
Not a difficult class. Lecture slides were dense but basically everything you need is in there and I didn't really do the readings but still did well on tests. My TA was not harsh so class went by easily. Just make sure you refresh on key terms before tests and you should be good.
you don't need to read the textbook and he posts the slides that have all the info from lecture u need so if u miss lecture you'll be totally fine. pretty easy class but 50% of your grade is based on 5 short essays graded by the TAs. my papers weren't graded until right before the final so it was kinda difficult to guess what my final grade wouldbe
Such a great GE. Graded by 5 short response papers, 1 midterm,1 final. Study well and you'll get the grade. Very great at explaining soc concepts & slides are well organized. Textbook is required, but everything he covers in class. Beware of your TA's!! They are VERY harsh graders and will mark you down for even spelling a word wrong.
He has good grading policies and you can work closely with your TA to ensure you get the grades you want. You have to write 5 essays, one midterm, one final, and section participation. All work is short and reasonable, his midterm/final are a lot like an AP test but short. His lectures cover everything the textbook does, you don't need to read it.
Turowetz is a great professor and I rly enjoyed the content that was covered. However, the grades on writing assignments(50% of your grade) are determined by your TA and the strict rubric they follow. Free response on tests are graded harshly and you will be marked off if you are even ONE WORD off the rubric. Harder than I thought SOC 1 should be.
Such a nice man who really cares that his students understand the content. Only a few quizzes/assignments and you can do well just by going to class
taken multiple classes with this prof, the last thing he wants is for you to fail the class. Extremely clear on what he expects on his papers so follow the rubric and you should get a near perfect score. lectures are just slides that he reads off of but they're also posted online
gradebook is very minimal, graded off two papers, two quizzes, and the final, all of which have a hefty weight. attendance is not mandatory, but some films we watch in class are featured on the quizzes so i would reccomend going anyway. very sweet, don't be afraid to ask questions, i only wish the papers' grading criteria were clearer
took soc 128 in the winter & it was amazing! 2 short papers & 1 final with a lot of freedom on what you choose to do (ex. essay, photographs, making a playlist, etc.). 3 quizzes & they were super easy even if you just review the slides. you can tell that turowetz rly cares for his students & wants all of them to succeed
took 128 & would take another. few short quizzes worth ~5% of ur grade each which are a breeze if you show up or even just review the slides since he tells you exactly what will be on there. Really lenient grading on the few 750 word papers there were and no final, just a project that you have a lot of liberty w/. Wish we got some feedback tho
i honestly felt like i could have skipped every lecture and still gotten an A just by using the slides uploaded online. grade consists of a term paper, midterm, and final, all which are worth a good chunk. you can ask him for help/feedback during the midterm and final papers and he helps! interesting class, i liked the films we watched
Dr. Turowetz is a great professor and his class is easy to pass. His lectures follow the slides, which he posts on GauchoSpace. The readings are a fair amount, interesting and easy to grasp. He assigned a take-home midterm, a term paper, and a take-home final. They were all easy, but I had a TA that was a tough grader & I missed 1/2 the lectures!
I really enjoyed this class. Professor Turowetz did a really good job of relaying course topics. Three Quizzes but he goes over what will be on them and provides a study guide. Only a few readings a week and they are really interesting. Attendance was not mandatory but I would suggest going makes the overall class concepts easier.
Clear lectures and manageable readings. Three assignments and three quizzes, none of which were too difficult. The content is interesting and valuable. Overall highly recommend this prof and this class!
He is literally the sweatiest! The class was pretty easy he didn't give a lot of assignments and they were all pretty straightforward (mainly common sense). No need to do the readings cause he explains everything you need to know during lectures. His lectures are organized, and he always posts the slides. He is also very responsive and flexible.
he's new, so I took a gamble when I registered for his class. not bad, lectures can be a little boring because he just reads off the slides. no quizzes, only 4 assignments and the midterm + final, so make sure to do good on those. assignments can be pretty vague but he replies to emails fast!
This is his 1st yr at UCSB. Sweet guy, very caring. Give 5 min break during lecture. Assignments are easy but effective, and the quizzes are nice to track knowledge, but don't count for a large portion of grade which is nice. Prof is knowledgable, but sometimes lectures are a bit slow. Readings are a lot, but easy to read. Overall, great teacher
