Such an amazing teacher and class. The course covers group building, acting, writing, creativity, and so many other things. 1h50min almost feels like 15 minutes. Can't recommend more if you are into theater in any way. Just come to class and participate in the activities and you'll have a great time!
easy class and a very fun/engaging way to learn more about improv/theater acting. i enjoyed it a lot even though i am not an theatre or acting major. bernard is very funny and a respectable man, i enjoyed every moment i was in the class, participation matters! come into this class with an open mind and you will succeed.
Michael is really a wonderful professor to have. He thinks quickly on his feet and interacts well with students throughout the class time. The games and smooth, intelligent, personable lectures make the almost two-hour class feel like no time at all - the kind of class you wish was just a little longer! Take this class if you can!
Very good at making the class feel comfortable working together and getting outside of their comfort zones. He pushes people to be better and gives everyone the chance to feel successful and accomplished.
What a great guy! Very fun class despite some real energy-sucking students (which makes teaching an improv class very tough). He is hilarious and supportive, but also jokes around with ribbing in a way which I found endearing but which seemed to dishearten a few students early on (most came around to it by the end). Gives great, clear feedback.
Prof Comrie is awesome. The little bit of homework you do helps prepare you for the intense midterm and final that require heavy memorization. The term paper is a little intense but just be sure to start thinking about it early on and ask Prof Comrie if you have any questions. Loved this course!
Extremely intelligent and helpful professor. Lecture content can be quite fascinating. Written midterm & final were pretty doable as long as you go through the outlines posted online and remember the important points. Term paper kind of long but you have a lot of freedom in writing it. Quite a fair bit of homework but not too terrible.
Comrie is incredibly intelligent and easy to understand. My only complaint would be that the homework is significantly harder than what we learn in lecture. Maybe I had problems with the HW because I didn't take morphology beforehand.
Future UCSB ling majors will be so lucky to have Bernard teaching more than one class a year. This guy is THE MAN - he's a brilliant and famous linguist teaching you the fundamentals of syntax and in a smart, intuitive way. I would have liked to see more practice in class, but just listening to him speak is worth gold. He is awesome.
If you take morphology before taking this class, it will be super easy for you! I love Comrie's lectures. He's super intelligent and definitely willing to help students discover their post-graduate life afterwards. Super clear instructions and quick at responding to email. I really enjoyed having him. We are very lucky!
I liked everything about this class. I learned a lot without getting stressed out. The prof was organized, clear, and helpful. The paper will sneak up on you, so you shouldn't overestimate your ability to write one quickly. I'd take another class from him, easily.
He was a very helpful teacher, the class was easy, he told you exactly what you needed to know for each test. There is one paper which sneaks up becuause he wants you to talk to him about a topic.Just pick something and go with it. Dont buy the reader he sends out PDF's and everything you would need
