Excellent course and professor. Students were shocked by exam difficulty based on midterm, but scores improved greatly for final. STUDY WITH A PARTNER! Book so/so... you need it for the required additional readings but not for reading alongside lectures. Very engaging class and lectures went by super quickly. Odd final grade policy. Very friendly.
I don't suggest this class if you have the choice for another upper div. Grade is only midterm & final. Tests are extremely tricky and will have 2 correct answers but you have to pick the “best”. If you do have to take this class u rly just need to study for the test like a week in advance, cramming won't work. if u fail midterm 1, ur sadly cooked
This class is so interesting, but please keep in mind that your grade is solely determined by midterm and final. I personally would not take it if I could go back. I did all the readings and studied hard will still get a mediocre grade. It's not worth it. Tests are also hard.
So funny & lectures are so interesting, esp bc he adds personal anecdotes/patient stories. Grading criteria's very clear. Ppl are mad bc they failed even though he clearly stated the midterm would be dense. Just do the all readings on syllabus, take good notes, and do the study guide in advance. An A is def doable, just study early & pay attention
$300 textbook, grade is only midterm and final, and doesn't curve at all. Lectures students on how dissapointed he is in them after exams. Would not recommend
No exaggeration, my favorite professor at UCSB, and I am a third-year! One of those classes where I went to every lecture because they were genuinely so interesting to me. He shares anecdotes of actual therapy patients and past cases. One midterm and one final make up your whole grade, but it's not overly hard as long as you put in time and work.
Get the textbook! It's expensive and the readings are long, but it will 100% help you out. Lectures are based off the text, but it's honestly a very interesting book. I learned so much and wished I could take the class for a longer amount of time/take a second course like it. The tests are detailed, but as long as you study you'll do great.
Fridlund is a funny professor but if you take this class make sure you're ready to put in the work. The class is very content heavy with dense slides and multiple textbook readings. I didn't end up using the textbook halfway through the class but I think it would definitely help. Attendance isn't mandatory but I think going helps tremendously.
Teaching style and course content are both so entertaining that even with optional attendance, most of the class showed up throughout the quarter. Don't let anyone tell you the class is unfair or too hard. Yes, the A isn't automatic, but he tells you EXACTLY what you need to do to succeed. Plus, he curves the tests and final grade.
Professor Fidlund's psych 183 class was one of my favorites at my time here. His lectures are very engaging and interesting to where you don't want to miss a class. Grades are determined by a midterm and final, but if you read the textbook and attend class you should be able to receive a good grade in the class.
A great professor and lecturer, making it easy enough to understand so many concepts in a short amount of time. You only have a midterm and final, no extra assignments or quizzes. But you have to go to lecture and do the readings since the tests can be heavy. If you're up for that, I can't recommend him enough. Easily one of my favorite classes.
One of the best professors I have ever had here at UCSB, his class had everyone hooked, and the attendance was always high. He talks about his experiences as a therapist and he is very passionate about what he teaches. highly recommend him, his exams are heavy because they have a lot of information but read, go to class, and study the lectures!
Hilarious and makes the material super interesting. Also is a practicing psychotherapist, so he talks about his own experiences with patients that have the disorders talked about in class. You are only graded on the midterm and final, but both are multiple choice and pretty straightforward. Definitely my favorite class I've taken at UCSB!
he is hilarious! attendance was consistent because he was just that amazing of a lecturer and as a person! i emailed him on a current study on something we were covering (so not mandatory ASAP email) and he responded within a couple hours, so super accessible!!! he was super nice and funny, very clear grading (midtermx2, final). get the textbook!
one of the best lecturers i've had and he's is a funny guy who cares a lot about this profession! go to his office hours to chat with him if you're interested in clinical psych. my tip is to do the study guide throughout the lecture and form study groups to solidify the material for your exams. an A is doable.
This will be a prof/class that I remember for life. One of the few classes that had high attendance the WHOLE quarter bc everyone was hooked. Fridlund is funny, kind, and is knowledgable/passionate about the content. I wish I could take another class with him & cannot recommend this class enough. Go to class, form a study group, and you'll do fine!
I loved this class and Professor Fridlund! Attendance isn't mandatory but I highly suggest attending. He is very funny and makes interesting commentary. Your grade depends entirely on your midterm and final which is very content-heavy. I regret not getting the textbook porbs would've ended up with A instead of B.
This professor is so fun. Made lectures digestible and provided good commentary on the material. Grade is solely based on midterm and final. Memorize the slides and read the book and you are guaranteed an A. Super fun and interesting class, highly recommend.
Professor Fridlund's lectures are engaging and insightful. With just a midterm and a final, the workload is manageable if you attend class, read the textbook, and utilize unstuckstudy ai for study prep.
The textbook is necessary for the articles written by Fridlund that are in the UCSB CUSTOM edition. It's possible to do well just by reading the slides and the textbook addenums, but Fridlund is a phenomenal lecturer, so I highly suggest attending. Fill out the fair game sheet and study it leading up to the exam - there's little room for error!
Passionate, funny, and amazing lectures.
Fridlund was great, PSY 183 was really fun for an upper div without prerequisites. Graded solely on one midterm and a final. Final is not cumulative. Just keep up with the reading, and pay attention in the lecture. I got roughly 75% on the first midterm without opening the book. Form a study group early and you should be set.
Prof. Fridlund is an absolutely phenomenal professor. He uses real life examples and is amazing at what he does. You will never be bored in his lectures. This being said, LISTEN TO HIM WHEN HE SAYS TO STUDY and use the fair game sheet! Your grade is dependent on only the midterm and final exam, which definitely require you to go to lectures.
Professor Fridlund is awesome. He is super enthusiastic about the material, has an excellent sense of humor, and doesn't give any busy work - just tests that he provides comprehensive study guides for well in advance. If you consistently go through them and read the material, you should get an A. I got a B because I was a bit lazy LOL. Great class!
