His tests are literally all trivial facts hidden on his slides, which is easy for many people, but just not for me. I literally considered dropping out of bio major because I put in so much work reading the textbook and the slides and kept getting 80 on tests, just because I cant memorize all details. I had to score 100 on Wiltons part to get A-.
reminds me of that one guy from young sheldon. tests were fair and lectures were interesting. just put in the effort and youll be fine. would take again
Mike was by far the best professor I had during my time at UCSB. He completely changed the trajectory of my college experience and my life as well. He is extremely caring and wants to see his students succeed. All you have to do is put in the hard work. Thank you Mike. You deserve all the accolades. The best Professor at UCSB hands down.
Absolutely stellar guy. Great at simplifying concepts down, and was very encouraging of questions. I found the lecture slides to be poorly organized, but his teaching made up for it. Passionate about improving our overall experience in the class, which is not common. UCSB students are lucky to have this guy in the bio program!
Good enough lecturer, and definitely a super nice guy who wants his students to succeed. Exams were relatively difficult, but not unreasonable.
Mike was a very good lecturer, and overall just a positive person. He taught his part (plant phys) of 1B well, and the exams we had on them were fair and related to what we had covered in class. He was also very accessible outside of class. He responded to emails quickly, which was really helpful whenever I had specific questions.
Smith was a decent lecturer, but tended to fall behind, which made everything a little harder. The exam we had for his section (first 5 weeks) had questions that were pretty unfair compared to what we had been taught. Also, I reached out to him for help with a quiz, but he brushed my request aside, leaving me confused. He's a very nice guy though.
He's ok. Sometime it felt like he would oversimplify concepts to the point where it felt like we were just memorizing things. It would have been nice to go into a little more detail on certain topics.
Dr. Wilton is amazing. His lectures are very clear and he's here to help you.
his lectures covered a lot of material but they were so engaging and well done that it still was manageable. he posted lecture videos and the homework was very similar to lectures so it wasn't too hard. his tests were kind of difficult but if you went to lecture and studied his notes he made during lectures they weren't too hard. awesome professor
Mike is hands down the best teacher I've had at UCSB. He is caring, smart, and respected by all of his students. Because of Mike's guidance, I was able to succeed in all of the upper div Bio coursework I'm currently taking. Mike deserves nothing but the best. If you put in the work, you will do well. I'm excited to take his classes in the future.
The professor taught very well, and the answers to questions after class were very timely. It's just that the exam is a bit difficult, I feel that biology is so difficult to get an A :(
The absolute GOAT. He cares about every student and tells you exactly what you need to do to succeed in his class.
His portion of 1B had a lot of content but he does a fantastic job at making clear what you should know and how to understand it. He's so so caring and if you go to his review sessions and put in the work you'll for sure end up with a good grade.
Dr. Wilton (Mike) is such a lovely individual. I performed quite terribly on the first 2 midterms in the class, and needed an unprecedented (for me at least) performance to pass. And I surpassed my unprecedented needs purely listening to Mike's study advice that he gives the class. Listen to him if you want to learn HOW to learn, and how to study.
AMAZING PROFESSER! Can't stress that enough!! I took both his 1A and 1B course. Very understanding and truly cares about his students. Exams are created very fairly. Perhaps the only con is that he only teaches half of the lectures for the quarter. :)))
Professor Wilton makes students feel seen and adds a lot of relevant studies to the lectures which makes them feel more relatable
MCDB 1B is tough because it is very content dense, but Mike's lectures are very clear and he is always encouraging about attending his office hours to receive extra help if you need it. Tests are fair and he's not trying to trick you, but the material is just tough. You have to work for a good grade (definitely a weeder class)
MCDB 1B is definitely one of the tougher classes in the intro bio series, but Wilton lectures so well, and you can just tell that he isn't trying to trick you like some of the other classes seem to. He loves answering questions and really lets his students know that they have his support!
Best professor at UCSB hands down.
Weekly multiple choice quizzes & 3 exams (mostly short answers). Grading for short answer questions is all over the place bc he doesn't give feedback on exams unless you email directly. His lectures are pretty interesting and the material is straightforward. I would recommend reading the book along with the powerpoints to study for the midterms.
He really cares about his students! He is willing to, and good at answering questions. Reading text book before lecture is quite important.
Mike is one of my favorite professors hands down ever. He really wants you to succeed and explains everything to a T. Even if you don't necessarily like what you're studying he makes it intriguing and engaging.
my fave prof this quarter. his tests are hard but fair, he's super helpful in office hours + gives u all the materials needed to succeed. print out lecture slides and write down what he says in class, then review it after lecture. watch the vids he says to watch before class bc they can only help! super chill and wants u to succeed, learned a lot
